The English Professional Learning Community met at the Broyhill Inn on Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at 4:00 PM. Attending were: Linda McAllister, James Ford, Jim Brooks, Dawn Poore, Kathi McRary, Kim Houck, and Shannon Perdue. Linda distributed several webcams and told us that funding for next year was still in doubt. She wanted us to have the webcams as we may not be able to meet as usual next year. We discussed the things we had accomplished this school year. We had: 1. Written our grant proposal and had it approved. 2. Met with Georgia Rhoades to plan a meeting about writing. 3. Met with Dennis Bohr and Georgia Rhoades to look at writing and portfolios. 4. Met with Dr. Atkinson to discuss a summer seminar about World Lit. 5. Discussed World Lit titles and got lists from Elaine OQuinn and Kim Houck. 6. Two of our members attended the Deepening the Dialogue sessions.
Lucas and Kathi reported on the Deepening the Dialogue sessions. They discussed the canon, noted problems with basic skills, punctuality, bringing materials, not reading, etc. It seems professors are under pressure to help students pass and succeed. Untenured people really felt pressure to help students pass.
We decided to postpone the listing of our World lit titles until fall. We will do this at our first meeting in the fall as soon as we find out how we will meet. We will post to Q-topic so people will know about that fall meeting. We briefly discussed exam exemptions and absence policies. The meeting adjourned.

Linda: I wonder if we might make use of the distance learning classrooms we have in our schools for times we cannot have a face-to-face meeting in Boone...just a thought. Jim Brooks

Please let me know if you would like a webcam before the summer. We will probably be using these next year for some of our PLC meetings so you might want to request one now so that you can practice with it.

As we end another year and look toward changes next year I would like to thank each one of you for your service to your students, the pre-service teachers at ASU, and to the Professional Learning Communities. With this change several of you may be interested in stepping aside and handing the torch to someone else. If you plan on doing this please let me know as soon as possible so that I can find a replacement for you. Just know that I appreciate all that you have done.
Send this information to mccalisterlm@appstate.edu Name: Group: Suggestion for replacement: (if any):
