I don't know french. but came upon this really nice french rap on MTV quite some time back. It has translation of the lyrics and it is about him not being a good son, a good boyfriend...sounding remorseful yet helpless cos he hasnt been absolutely good. I have very vague memory and can't recall title and rapper's name. MTV had him in the rain, I recall. I know this is very vague. and it is quite some time again. I didn't find the others on the net in a decent quality but the best in my opinion are Svinkels TTC and La Caution, but you need to really understand french ( and french slang ) to really appreciate those ones.

but you must listen to the underground side of this hip hop...I'm speaking about artist like "hocus pocus" or "prince d'arabee"...

Ya know, delgado, were you to understand French (or hip-hop for that matter) you might actually see the "clever wordplay and metaphors" you seem to think are lacking in French Hip-hop. You see, these translations are missing some of the most important aspect of hip-hop; namely the street slang and the multiple, subtle meanings of words conveyed by the MCs. But, ya know, it sure is easy to dis something you obviously know nothing about so I guess I don't blame you.

MC Solaar is a poet, and French hip hop is more vibrant and real these days than American hip hop has been since 1992. There are, of course, exceptions on both sides of the Atlantic, but if you think 50 Cent is anything more than a marketing ploy, then your idea of hip hop and mine are on different planets ANYWAY.

I can't think of this as hip hop. Beside flow, there's a certain perspective and attitude that comes with the cadence of rap. True hip hop is defined by clever wordplay and metaphors, not lyrics that sound like the words to a bad metal ballad: "To realize that hope emerges from the darkness."

It is the 93rd _departement_ of France (administrative area created by the Napoleon administration. the 91 to 95 ones were created more recently to account for population growth in the suburbs of Paris in the 60s), located north of Paris. Contains mainly cities with big sets of ugly building where the poors and foreigners live.

Inside Paris there are 20 arrondissements (subdivision for some big cities like Lyon and Marseille).

NTM are great too. I work with a load of French guys and they gave me an NTM dvd to watch. Well impressed I was.

Good hiphop beats mixed with the french language, what a great combination.

I'm a big fan of French rap. You should also check out MC Solaar, Bambi Cruz, Ménélik.
