Our Mom would sometimes add to a short prayer: "...and be with those
whom we love." or "...and be with those who cannot be here with us."

Thank you for collecting and sharing these graces. The childrens verses
reminded me of my grade school lunch blessings (in the 1950's).

As a child I said the Guardian Angle prayer and also another one - the thought of dying in my sleep scared me then but this prayer calms me now

Now I lay me down to sleep
I pray the lord my soul to keep
Guard me Jesus through the night
and wake me with the morning light
but if I die before I wake
I pray the lord my sould to take.

The middle two verses seem to make the last two verses not so scary!

Over thirty years ago, there was a Mennonite prayer in the National Geographic, which I used to say to my boys at bedtime. It was something like the following. I just can't remember if I have it right. Does anyone know of this prayer?

I am a little child
My heart is pure
In Jesus' name I go to sleep
May the lovely angels watch over me.

I especially liked this one, because it did not scare the children, but gave them comfort. Now, I would like to share it with my grandchildren.

I pray the Lord my soul to take
God bless mommy and daddy and (Aaron) and (Amanda)
Help us to be good servents of the lord

I am with VASA Order of America, A Swedish-Fraternal Organization and compiling songs for the local lodge. I have been given a copy of a meal blessing sung to edelweiss from one of our elder members, but have been unable to find it on the internet. Have you heard this song? If possible, I need information today as we have Midsummer tomorrow 6/20.

Meal Blessing (tune Edelweiss)
Bless our friends, bless our food
Come, O Lord, and sit with us.
May our talk glow with peace,
May your wisdom surround us.

Friendship and Love, May it bloom and grow,
Bloom and Grow forever.
Bless our friends, bless our food,
Come O Lords, and sit with us.

Angel of God,
My guardian dear,
to whom God's love entrusts me here.
Ever this (day/night), be at my side,
to light, to guard,
to rule, and to guide.
Amen.

Our bedtime prayer when I was little:

Jesus hanging on the cross
Tell me was it I ?
There are great big teardrops Lord.
Did I make you cry ?
I have been a naughty child,
naughty as can be.
Now I am so sorry Lord.
Won't you pardon me?
Amen

Then we would ask God to bless everyone we loved.

It is a sweet memory...............

When I was a little girl, my mother always said a prayer at bedtime that started out, "Epen Kline....", that is a phonetic spelling. I was wondering if that is German for part of the prayer, "Now I lay me down to sleep..." Is there anyone out there who knows German who might remember how this prayer is said in German?

Your sermon Sunday was excellent. I appreciated your focus on the words of the Epistle: "Give thanks in all circumstances."

Here is the prayer our elderly people with dementia and Alzheimers at Friendship Adult Day Services in Burlington pray in unison before the noon meal: "God is great; God is good. And we thank him for our food. By his hand we all are fed. Give us Lord our daily bread." Amen

As a child my parents always taught me the prayer;
Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep, if I should die before I wake i pray the Lord my soul to take; God bless my Dad, my Mom,( then my siblings, grandparents and pets) and everyone. Lord if I should not wake, let the three little angels around my bed, one to pray, one to sing, and one to carry my soul away reunite me with you. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen

My mother taught me this prayer, it is slightly different to the others but here goes:

Matthew, Mark, Luke and John,
Bless this bed that I lay on.
With four angels to guard me,
one at the head
one at the foot
two at the sides
amen.

I prefer this one as it does not relate or refer to death it just is asking God to protect for the night until the sun rises.

Not being particularly religious, and having been asked to say grace at a dinner/dance function I came on to the internet for material. I happened across your website. Can I just say thank you, to you, and all your contributors. It instilled a little more faith in me, whilst travelling life's course in this troubled world. Particularly all the postings relating to encoraging kids and making them think for themselves. Some made me smile, some made me think, some rekindled hope that we can all get on together with God's guidence.
Just a note to suggest that Benedictus, benedicat (May the blessed One bless) is followed at the end of the meal by Benedicto, Benedicatur. (May the blessed One be blessed).
Also Masonically we use the Laudi Spirituali (A.D. 1545) which unless the tune is known, is difficult. When it is sung correctly, it can be quite rousing!
Regards
Alan Burnett.

I say one at the end of the day with my Kindergarten students. We use our hands to do actions.

Two little eyes to look to God
Two little ears to hear His word
Two little feet to walk in His ways
Two little lips to sing His praise
Two little hands to do His will
And one little heart to love him still
Amen

At lunch we say:
Come Lord Jesus be our Guest, let this food for us be blessed.
Amen

O lord, lay me down to sleep tonight
Forget the world, and hold me tight
And in my dreams, it's her I see
Do you do this, just to punish me?
But if you must, don't let me wake
For without her, my heart will break
But all is peaceful, and all is still
So let me dream, and dream I will

I visited your website today and was impressed with the number and variety of graces you have accumulated. While there I noticed that Scott Deuel submitted a grace "Bless our friends . . ." but said he couldn't describe the tune for it. You may be interested to know that his grace fits well to the tune "Edelweiss" made popular in the movie "Sound of Music".

Another prayer that goes to the same tune is:

Thank you Lord, on this day
for our many good blessings.
Thank you Lord, on this day
for our many good friendships.

Glory to God, may you hear our prayer
Guide us on forever
thank you Lord, on this day
for our blessings and friendships.

My 3 year old son John has heard this prayer each night since he was born: he won't go to sleep without reciting it himself.

"Matthew, Mark, Luke and John
Bless the bed that I lay on.
Four corners to my bed,
Five angels there lie spread.
Two at my head, two at my feet
One at my heart, my soul to keep."

(Linda, your post below seems like it's almost the same prayer; maybe your memory has switched the lines?)

I was wondering if anyone has ever heard of this night time prayer:

Gentle Jesus,
Meek and Mild,
Look upon a Little Child,
Suffer Me,
Come to Thee,
Christ Sake,
Amen.

My mother was taught this prayer when she was a child by her mother. And my mother taught this to her six children. I taught this to my two children, now I'm saying this prayer with my three grandchildren.
I wish I knew if this is the correct way of saying it or if anyone knows this prayer.
My mother has Alzheimer's disease, and I no longer can ask her anything about it.
I hope you can help.

Remember me God I come everyday. Just to talk with you Lord and to learn how to pray, you make me feel welcome you reach out your hand I need never explain for you understand. I come to you frightened and burdened with care so lonely and lost so filled with dispare and suddenly Lord I'm no longer afraid my burden is lighter and the dark shadows fade. Oh Lord what a comfort to know that you care and know when I seek you'll always be there

Dear God,
plesse protect me through the night
Hold me safe and hold me tight.
have miss mary stand next to you

I love my mom and love my dad,
I cherish my only sister I've ever had.
So let this prayer reach them too

Bless the bed that I lay on
Four corners to my bed
Four angels there did spread
One at the head
One at the feet
And two to guide me while I sleep

I heard one in a movie and I fell in love with it.
Angels East, Angels West, North and South just do your best,
Guard her/him watch her/him while he/she rests.
Amen

yes the movie was bad, but this was an instant love of mine.

On the basis of the prayers available on the net I have created one that covers three important things:
i. To be thankful for the food that you get;
ii. To be greatful to those who have prepared it for you;
iii. To remember those who may not earn their bread everyday;
Here it goes
For the food that I get O Dear Lord,
Bless me to thank of my own accord
Every day and night while I eat
Bless those hands that prepared it
I am so fortunate to have it in my plate
Bless those too who are less fortunate

The prayer my mother and father taught us when we were VERY small was "Father, Mother, God - loving me, guard me while I sleep. Guide my little feet up to thee. Amen.

I have heard that this was a prayer from Mary Baker Eddy, the founder of Christian Science, but my grandmother told me it was from the Shaker tradition.

As a child I remember saying the night prayer, As I lay me down to sleep.... In fact, I still say it to this day and I'm 70 years old. I often wondered why there wasn't a similar "morning" prayer. So here's one I offer to all:

As I rise from my sleep
I pray the Lord my soul He'll keep
If I should die before days' end
I pray the Lord my soul He'll tend.

In the Navy, at dinner for the officers in the Ward Room, Grace is noramly said by the chaplain. Shhould the chaplain not be present then grace is said by the senior officer present. It is alleged that his grace takes this form:
"Padre not here ? - Thank God."

I have been saying a German prayer that my dad taught me, at the end of my "Now I lay me down to sleep" prayer, but over the years, couldn't remember exactly the correct pronunciation or what the prayer meant. Now I say "Now I lay me" with my grandson every night and have added the German prayer at the end, and figured I'd try searching the web for this prayer so Thank You, Thank You-I found it here!

As a child i used to say the same prayer every night before bed.
It wasn’t until my wife Jacqui lost our baby after 19 weeks that the prayer came back into my head and now whenever i think of little Sweet Pea (this was the name i used to call the bump before he died) i say this prayer. For some reason it really helped me through an extremely difficult time, im not really religious but i just hope it might help others.......
As i lay me down to sleep
i pray the lord my soul to keep
and if i die before i wake
i pray the lord my soul to take
I’ve four corners on my bed
and four angles overhead
Matthew Mark Luke and John
God bless the bed that i lie on

I have been searching for a advise like this not just one prayer not just one religion preference but common ground that l feel is equal. I thank you! For all the ones that contributed to this site! I was not raised in Christian home nor was I taught much about the Lord. Now I have my own children and I am trying finding my way to guide them in the righteous way so I Thank you very much from my heart and soul..

Try this out for size...

Now I lay me down to sleep,
Pray the Lord my soul to keep,
If I die before I wake,
Pray the Lord my soul to take.

Hush, little baby,
Don't say a word,
And never mind that noise you heard,
It's just the beasts under your bed,
In your closet, in your head.

Great place!! Thanks so much! My 4 year old daughter asked tonight to learn a new prayer. Even after reminding her that she can talk to God any time about anything she still asked for me to teach her a new "night night prayer." I found several.

my friend had this version of "before i lay me"

before i lay me down to sleep,
i pray the lord my soul to keep.
if i should die before i wake,
i pray the lord my soul to take.
and if i should live for an other day,
i pray the lord to guide my way.

sorry if the spelling is wrong, i am from norway, and my friend from usa, i think her grandmother had made the picture for her, whit the wers on it.

I noticed that some posted this prayer:

"Bless us O Lord, for these Thy gifts, which we are about to receive, from Thy bounty, through Christ, our Lord. Amen."

I wanted to point out that the "for" should be an "and". It makes more sense that way, because the "blessing" is over the people and the food, not the over the people because of the food.

On a lighter note: Shel Silverstein (1930-1999) mocked attachment to matter in the following poem from "A Light In The Attic":
Now I lay me down to sleep,
I pray the Lord my soul to keep
And if I die before I wake
I pray the Lord my toys to break
So none of the other kids can use 'em
Amen

I am with william here. As I just spent the night with a 90-year old wonderful lady, who is dying in agony because fear was projected into her from some of her loved ones, I feel compelled to say: it is precisely the fear of God that separates us from the truth. The truth is: Life and death are connected, and the soul knows no death at all, when it has reached a point where only Love matters. I watched in awe as this beautiful lady is communicating with souls of loved ones who have passed on. She is crossing over. It is her journey. All she has to do is surrender to the love of God, which is the highest protection.

My mother-in-law taught this prayer to my stepchildren and we say it every time we eat together, be it at home or in a restaurant:

"Thank you, Jesus, for this food.
 Bless us, we pray, Amen"

It's short enough to learn quickly, say with sincerity and include thanks and blessings for everyone.

I was looking for a new prayer to teach my daughter As a child I misunderstoof and feared the prayer I was taught.

The prayer I was taught is written below with what I thought as a child each line said in parenthesis.

Now I lay me down to sleep,

I pray the Lord my soul to keep.

If I should die before I wake,
"Fashidie before I wake"
I pray the Lord my soul to take.
"I pray the Lord my soul to tape"

Once, I finally understood the words and rethought the prayer as an adult I think the idea of death shouldn't be introduced into a child's life on a daily basis.

Five little angles round my bed.

One to sing and one to pray, and one to take my sins away. Amen ,

Mommy usually sings the bedtime prayer and my 5 year old son and I were completely blocked about the full (for us 8 line) prayer and knew "now i lay me down to sleep" was in it but thought it was the first line. Thankfully I found this site & rediscovered the first line as "now the light has gone away" and the rest all came back. Now the light has gone away and the boys are blessedly quiet. Amen.

Another ending to Now I lay me...

Glad and well may I awake
And this I ask for Jesus’ sake.

I learned the following as a bedtime prayer and as an evening song (most evening songs are prayers...) This is slightly different than a version you have (no 'thy's and a third verse)

Jesus, Tender Sheperd hear me
Bless your little lamb tonight
Through the darkness please be near me
Keep me safe til morning light

All my days your hand has led me
And I thank you for your care
You have clothed me, warmed and fed me
Listen to my evening prayer.

May my sins be all forgiven
Bless the friends I love so well
Take us all at last to heaven
Happy there with you to dwell. Amen.

 This is another evening song/prayer:
Now the light has gone away
Father listen while I pray
Asking Thee to watch and keep
And to send me quiet sleep

Jesus Savior wash away
All that I’ve done wrong today
Help me every day to be
Pure and gentle more like Thee.

Let my near and dear ones be
Always near and dear to Thee
Please take me and all I love
To Thy heavenly home above

Thou my best my heavenly friend
Thou wilt love me to the end
All my blessings come from Thee
Oh how good you are to me.

Now my evening praise I give
Thou didst die that I might live
All my blessings come from thee
Oh how good thou art to me!

I read all the prayers listed on your site, and I'm very impressed. I've been a camp couselor for several years, and I've used some of the prayers with the children I look after.

There is one prayer that I have an issue with. The one that has the line "if I should die before I wake." It's not that I don't like the prayer, on the contrary, I use it all the time with children. It's my favourite bedtime prayer (the one I was raised on).

I don't think that children think too much about the so-called dredded line about dying in that prayer. I think that children are cocentrating on talking to God and asking for security during the night while they sleep. Basically, the child is saying "if I die while I'm sleeping, so what? I'll be safe, anyway."

I heard the prayer in the song "Enter Sandman" by rock band Metallica. When I heard that, it triggered a memory from my childhood (okay, I'm 25). I hadn't said the prayer since I was seven, but the song got me saying it again. I was 16 when the song came out, I believe, and I've been saying it ever since. Especially with children in my care.
