The "Now I lay me down to sleep" prayer use to be scary when I was a child. To say "If I die before I wake"...well I did not want to think about death before getting in bed because I had a "Bogey-Man" and a "Sand-Man" after me.
Where was God when the light went out? That is another story I wrote about it in my up and coming book called "Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep" I looking forward to having many readers. In the mean time...Sweet Dreams...

Now Ill Lay Me Down To Sleep I Pray The lord to love me and to kiss me a good night sleep he tells me he loves me and the angel sees me cry and says tells me who has died loves me

Our Mom would sometimes add to a short prayer: "...and be with those
whom we love." or "...and be with those who cannot be here with us."

reminded me of my grade school lunch blessings (in the 1950's).

As a child I said the Guardian Angle prayer and also another one - the thought of dying in my sleep scared me then but this prayer calms me now

Now I lay me down to sleep

Guard me Jesus through the night

but if I die before I wake

The middle two verses seem to make the last two verses not so scary!

Over thirty years ago, there was a Mennonite prayer in the National Geographic, which I used to say to my boys at bedtime. It was something like the following. I just can't remember if I have it right. Does anyone know of this prayer?

I am a little child
My heart is pure
In Jesus' name I go to sleep
May the lovely angels watch over me.

I especially liked this one, because it did not scare the children, but gave them comfort. Now, I would like to share it with my grandchildren.

Now you lay me down to sleep I pray the lord my soul to keep the angles watch me through the night until the morning night.Father in heaven hear my prayer keep me in thy loving care be my guide in all I do and bless all those who love me too.

God promises forgiveness to all those who ask with a sincere heart. Even the worst thing in the world.
