Hmm... poems about dancing, eh? I can do that...

Karen Kain is the new head of the Canada Council for the Arts.

Does the Canada Council Really Help Writers?

An interview with the Canada Council (Note: It's from 2002, but it's still interesting.)

Here is the link. It seems it's $500 or related expenses incured, which ever is greater.

Some interesting reading there at any rate.

Accountant, you do realize you've compromised the safety of my family by using my real name so brazenly. I've been being stalked by KK for years now, and finally she's found a chink in my armour. It was you. Yes, you.

Strop, I'm pretty sure it's stil $3K. You still send in the T4A, with a note attached reminding them of the exemption. Don't take my word for it, though. The easiest way to verify this information is to telephone Revenue Canada.
Also, another mistake commonly made is for those people who report as a small business to put the grant under their business income, or in line 104 under "Other employment income." If you do that you're subject to CPP on the grant. It should be remembered that, strictly speaking, a grant isn't employment income. The appropriate place to report this income is in line 130, under "Other Income."
George, I'd recommend finding someone who lives in the same city as you. The world's full of number crunchers.

Ah, please point to the part of the tax law that says that. I think you'll find, unless something's changed, that the first $5oo is a deductable and the rest is up for grabs. And, the CC issues a T4A which says how much the grant is for.

Ninja, if our anonymous bean-counter can't help, I've got a friend in Edmonton. Lemme know.

If you're really an accountant, I'm looking for someone to help me out. I read books on astrophysics and theoretical mathematics, but if you put a dollar sign in front of a number, I can't even add it to another. Seriously, george@bookninja.com.

Do you all know that the first $3000 of a grant is tax excempt? If you get, say, a 10K grant, you only need to declare 7K of it.

The Part that's Missing at the End is About How They're Going to Reform the GG's per Bookninja's Suggestion...

The Canada Council is like a kid angling for gifts when his birthday is six months away...

All I can say is, when you do, Salad, put a third of it away for taxes (preferably in an account where you're unlikely to ever get at it...)

I shudder to remember.

Please forgive me for butting in - I am listening and planning to talk, but I want to see if my name comes up right... hi, my name is Salad. I'm a girl Salad and I've yet to receive a CC grant.
And what's with Alberta writers? Fewer of them apply for CC grants as compared to the rest of us.

Jury duty and aestethic determination power: a very interesting point you've made, Fat Kid.
