I think the discussion is going rather well at this stage... bit of cut and thrust, a few jibes a little close to the bone, 2xOMGs and 1xWTF and thanks very much I got google back. Still a bit in the dark as to who/why...

What happened to "Discuss" in the top-level (non-guest) blog?

Someone managed to log in as Xeni and Cory and spoiled it for everyone.... (and some other idiot was putting up the usual offensive images on every post)... this discussion forum right here may indeed be the last on boing boing...

Yeah, where did all the discussions from boingboing go?
Shouldn't there be some discussion on how there isn't
discussions anymore? (or maybe just some reason, so we're
not all sitting here in the dark, wondering about it?)

There were several messages discussing where discussing went (woah.. repeat x2), as well as possible reasons why, but they were all deleted by the administrator. So, basically, I think they are tired of the negative comments. Viva Boingiscm!

xeni's pictures of some fuckers on skateboards is such obvious troll bait, even I'm not dumb enough to create a QT.

man. this sucks. I always looked to the comments to expand & enlighten (even if it was being enlightened as to who the trolls were). My local paper killed the comments this past year right before a contentious referndum that was filling up its server. I read the on-line paper far less often, now. Less interactive, less illumination [this is not a BB threat, I'm jus sayin].

Why not just have a "report this post" button on each post, to allow us to essentially moderate for you? All the real mods have to do is get the reports maile to them, and delete any offensive posts etc. Works well on many other sites. Also, disallowing anonymous posting entirely may help.

Yhat won't help, you fucking retard. They can just register as many accounts as they want, all with novel capitalizations of my name (like this one). I know if i were Cory, i definitely wouldn't want to spend my time deleting the messages of all the false Corys (like me).

the discussion links went away because the philistines that run this blog cannot bear the transgressive nature of our performative DISCOURSE!

they are content to examine their bourgeoise navels and post pictures of breathing masks and horrible amateur photography. also, xeni doesn't like us because we have refused her attempts to broker a gallery opening.

so is the discuss comming back?
I found most of the comments to be interesting, its one of the reasons I like metafilter or charlies blog and previously this one.

I don't reckon; bb is popular enough to attract enough trolling to completely wreck the forum. Be good to see an announcement about it though. Damn... the bb posts were just the tip of the iceberg for me; there was always a bunch of well-considered, articulate posts in the forums which teased out the subject in like a dozen different directions.

How long has the flaming gone on? I thought that after the sarsart backlash everything went back to normal.

it begun when xeni took 8 collective dumps in our mouths in a row, a few days ago, and it will continue until the demands of a sane universe are met.

Mothrafugger, I agree that the bb trolls are about the least
imaginative and subtle trolls I've run across. Unfortunately,
what with QuickTopic lacking blocks for similar names (such
as the Xeni/xeni pair) I can see why Cory et al. don't want
to revive discuss.

I'm going to miss it.

Some of us would like to figure out a workable discuss method
that will avoid trolls.

Maybe we could write our own software to censor posts. If someone posted something that is anti-boingboing, or contains slanderous remarks about Cory or me, we could delete their post and log their IP. The software could then do a simple IP trace to find out where the IP is from and who the admin is of that provider. When all that info is collected it could be sent to Cory's email address.

Cory could then contact the Gestapo and SS with what limited information he has. They will then blitzkreig their way into the internet service provider's office and force information from the unpure mouth of the admin. When they have the name and address of the poster, they can quickly surround that area and take him/her and their family into custody. Under the persuasive hands of the SS I am sure he/she will tells us about any collaborators.

When all of these people are rounded-up, we can put them all in cattle bins on trains and send them to camps outside of LA. There they can be reeducated and fully indoctrinated with love of boingboing. In no time at all the posts will be orderly and formal. No one will dare post anything not to our liking. Not only will it not stay up, but we shall personally see to it that they are "instructed" in the proper manner of posting and thinking. We will honor this measure with a phoneblog of the whole process, and make it the fourth step in the Final Solution.

Boingboing readers, do not be fooled by our seemingly liberal voices in our blog posts. Cory and I are both hard-handed dictators willing to take any action to keep the purity of the site. If we have to remove all the discussion forums to strip the infidel a place to voice their opinions, we will. The ends DO justify the means.

The autoban moderation features of the slashcode generally handle trolls fairly well...but I don't think the BB crowd is up to installing it.
