As long as there are clueless parents there will be a market. It is not too dificult to learn what a baby's cries mean in context but this device operates in no context, sort of like a clueless parent.

I know a couple who received several discussions on the importance of regular normal talking to their newborn daughter. However as the baby developed their main mode of interaction was to make funny sounds and poke her (because that got the biggest response). When she belatedly and spontainously started saying two words, her parents switched to barking these words back at her with various intonations, but still no conversation.

While educated and well meaning, these parents seem totally lacking in empathy. To help the child's slow progress with language they have invested in videotapes and flashcards that teach 3 languages at once, but they still seem to be waiting for her to talk well before they converse.

For parents with no empathy, you can buy things but they really won't help.

Non-machine (but non-professional) translation:

* Yes, it is that kind of euphemism.
** I'm guessing a little, it's a Korean name that in Japanese literally translates as something like "Wijombu Holy/Emperor's Mother Hospital".

In fact this is in Korea, not Japan (one can see that in the picture, and the japanese article mentions the price in won). I wonder if those translators have been adapted from the Spanish invention, or if babies cry the same way the world over...

These gadgets are a terrific bit of pseudoscience -- the ultimate in saying something which is unproveable and saying "prove me wrong". Prove that they aren't accurately translating baby cries or dog barks. You can't (anymore than they can prove they are right in their translations); but the onus should be on them to prove they are right. Instead, they move the onus on anyone else to rpove they are wrong.

Suckering nervous first-time parents into buying pseudoscience crap is almost as high up on the scumsucker list as tellin gthem you're talking to their dead parents.

This was actually an invention from Spain that came out last year called "Why Cry".

Personally, I am disgusted that mothers/fathers are being encouraged to ignore their instincts and listen to a machine instead of simply picking up the baby. In all the pictures of this device it shows the parents NOT holding and cuddling the baby to soothe her. In many of the pictures the baby is crying while the parents shove a machine into its face.

PICK UP YOUR KID and cuddle her for crying out loud! (pun intended)

the word translated as "inconvenient" has a dictionary definition of "inconvenience, inexpediency, unhandiness". you'd have to ask a native japanese speaker whether or not that's a euphemism, but i think it makes more sense with a broad meaning, given the application (unless the device has an odor sensor).

The Simpsons did it.
