Can nanotech help find a doorway to another dimension? Or at least speed up my Internet connection?

I think there was a good deal of discussion of escape hatches at the end of Moravec's "Mind Children". One particular thing I recall was that he conjectured we might be running in a simulation (http://www.simulation-argument.com/) and if we were lucky, we might hack the simulation software somehow, and either escape the simulation or at least prevent the universe's heat death.
