The Corrections

Having the mistakes in your book corrected. Suuuuure... "mistaaaaaakes".

Corrections in books are rare. But the conclusion this implies - that books rarely contain errors - is itself incorrect. Books are not usually corrected because they can't be, not because they shouldn't be.

I wish we could also correct our royalty statements. I've had a sneaking suspicion for quite some time that those things are just plain wrong.

Lesser-known editing marks
Could have used these when I worked for Harlequin.

Interestingly enough, all the PR material I've seen for the film in Canada has been properly punctuated.

So my son says to me, "mom, what's wrong with sleeping with 22 year olds." as I was dating one for a while. "What" I ask. "There's 22 of them." Har har har. Maybe they copy editor had a teenage son, or is a teenager with that sense of humour?

My daily nightmare
Hollywood spends millions on making and promoting movies but can't be bothered to proofread the actual titles of movies.

What happens when the title of a hit movie doesn't conform to AP style?

That question was answered in recent days when newspapers started reviewing and writing about the new box office hit whose official name is "The 40 Year-Old Virgin." Of course, as any reporter or editor worth his or her salt knows, there should be a hyphen between 40 and Year. As it reads now, it's almost as if the movie is about 40 virgins who are still toddlers (not exactly unusual).

Cooking the books

Jessa Crispin makes the Book Standard fun to read. Who'd have thunk it? Here she talks about the evils of poorly edited cookbooks.

Pitchfork, that's my life's work! I long for the day when I'll not give a cluck about what you say.
