I'm 27.9 apparently, which is just slighlty higher than my actual age (I'll be 27 next month). It's the diet and exercise questions that got me. I've been searching for cost-effective ways of exercising that don't involve being outside in the winter or just being in my apartment. Been thinking about joining a gym, but I'm not sure I really want the added monthly expense.

Everyone but me is probably already aware of how incredibly fun it is to use modern technology to dink with one's music. (Jump in the saddle hold on to the bridle.) However, if anyone here is more of a late-adapter than I am, take note. You're missing out.

This is too cool. I can disassemble CDs into their component tracks. (The love of one's country is a terrible thing.) I can arrange, combine, and reassemble assorted tracks to suit me. (First time I'd seen him smile in years.) Since I'm too dumb to be able to tell how much stuff fits on one CD, it's a good thing the software comes with a handy graph to show me how much of the CD I'm using up at any given time. (It's a glorious mess, everbody wears a fez.) When I'm done, I can clickit to burn throwaway CDs for use in my car. (Shouldn't widow Jones be told to keep her window shades all pulled completely down?) This doesn't cost a fortune. It's dipshit simple. (Eleven long-haired friends of Jesus in a chartreuse microbus.) The software Goro Mark suggested is actually HELPFUL and well worth the twenty-odd bucks I paid for it. Wow.

I don't have any idea why I didn't think this would be fun. I must have been on crack. Serious crack.

So I'm younger than you? Cool!

I've always told people who fret about expenses for joining gyms, et cetera, that the only thing you need to have to get into shape is a body. If you like swimming, you might consider getting a membership at the Natatorium on the Penn State campus. Or you can find some sort of active activity you enjoy, whether it's hiking in parks or, as you suggested, joining a gym.

Of course, you can always set up a regimen to do in your apartment, like a certain number of sit-ups and pushups, coupled with, say, an exercise tape. Just make sure it's a tape that you enjoy, because you'll be doing it a lot.

In the winter, my preferred exercises are taking long walks in the snow with my doggie, and doing kick boxing aerobics and yoga tapes at home.

Another tip: for a week, keep a food journal of everything you eat. This will help you to identify habits you might want to change.

Alyce: I don't date. I was going explain, but it's not an item of general interest. Take it as a given that if I am at a "dating" website, I am there for reasons other than dating.

As it happens, I was there because aashby's blog had a link to the entry. I was at aashby's blog because she writes fanfic that I read, and I'm sort of waiting for her to finish up PML, one of her current works in progress.

The directions actually work and I found them reasonably easy to follow for casting on, knitting, purling, and binding off. The rest, I suspect, is a matter of practice.

Warning: Elapsed time from "Hey, I can knit!" to the onset of yarn lust was approximately two days. It's possible that one should not *learn* to knit on 100% mohair (yarn of scrumpdilyiciousness) any more than one should start learning to drink by way of everclear. *ahem* If I'd had a cheap acrylic on hand, I'd have used it. It is not my fault that I have a mohair life instead of an acrylic life.
