Weblog/social software developers have wanted to agree on standard ways to syndicate and link blog content. RSS is the de facto standard, but it was not created collaboratively (as standards tend to be) and not everyone agreed that RSS was okay as is. As I understand it Dave Winer argued vehemently that RSS is just fine as is and shouldn't be modified or extended. Other developers finally gave up and started a collaborative standards project (currently known as "Atom"), while Dave froze the RSS spec.
Blog software developers are starting to charge for some versions of their products, so there is a commercial aspect, but I don't see it as relevant to the issue here. Even if this was a totally noncommercial space, we would still want a viable, agreed-upon standard for syndication.

So what's this? I don't understand why this should be a problem in what I perceive to be a non commercial channel.
