Nella: your story sounds very similar to mine. My son, now 12mos, screamed in pain for three months all day. He never slept anywhere except on top of one of us for that entire time. I had the same advice from dr's, and like you, did my own research and made my own decisions, keeping their suggestions in mind. The thing that finally helped us was first getting a diagnosis of silent reflux at 7wks. He never spit up, but he was in terrible pain. Do you notice your baby gulping or gagging, back arching, not wanting to lay flat, especially on the back, wet hiccups, etc.? All these are signs of silent reflux. My son now takes prevacid. Then I eliminated milk, soy, and anything else I suspected may bother him from my diet. And finally, at about 8mos, we began formula trials even though he had been healthy and happy on my breastmilk for a few months. I just couldn't do the diet any longer. My Nate was unable to tolerate neocate or elecare, so we tried nutramigen AA (amino acid). It's the newest on the market I think. He has been on that for over 4mos, but we're paying for it out of pocket and it's expensive. We're trying to switch to neocate jr presently, but he has new eczema.

I know how you feel. I know the frustration with the dr's who don't have to deal with a screaming, miserable baby all day. No dr we've seen (we've been to 6 including the GI) knows as much as the ladies on this forum and others like it. The only reason I keep our GI is bc he gives us enough prevacid. Our ped can't/won't prescribe it. I would encourage you to try to keep bf'ing, eliminating all milk and soy, including derivatives. How strict have you been so far? It takes weeks for it all to get out of yours and baby's system. If that is too overwhelming you may try the alimentum RTF like Dee Dee said. Lots of moms with really sensitive kiddos have had success with it.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Re: Culturelle probiotics: didn't someone on here try those? Do you know if they are made with soy? They're supposed to be dairy-free.

Nella: the ready to feed versions don't have the corn syrup solids that the others do. Those corn ingredients could be troublesome. Great that you still have a supply! My daughter Elli is now 22 months old. She was exclusively b-fed when at 5.5 weeks she turned up with mucous and blood in her diaper. I eliminated from my diet for 3.5 months. Then I tried alimentum ready to feed which worked for her, thank goodness. In hindsight, I wish I had kept bf-ing her and tried what Jill did - a rare/ exotic foods rotation diet. ( My son Robby is 3. At 2, we figured out he had a severe intolerance to cow's milk. He never had mucous or blood but was a very fussy baby.)

I believe that Similac Alimentum is along the same lines as Nutramigen which is made by Enfilmil. They are both hypoallergenic however are made in the same areas that milk and soy based formulas are. So there is very same amounts of cross contamination. The next step would be the Elecare or Neocate, which he is on. I do still have my milk supply.

Nella: have you tried Similac Alimentum ready to feed? Any chance you still have a milk supply yourself - did you keep pumping?

Hello Everyone,
My son is 9 weeks old and we believe that he has MSPI. He has been screaming in pain since day 2 of life. I was breastfeeding tried eleminating all dairy from my diet and he did not get any better. My orginal pediatrician said to me "well he is gaining weight so you are just going to have to deal with a cranky baby." We then saw a different pediatrician and he stated that I had to stop breastfeeding and go to formula. Well, first we tried regular formula and no change infact worsening of symptoms. Then changed to Soy and for the first week he was a bit better and then started to get worse again. Then we tested his stool for blood and my heart sank as the test came back positive. So, we proceeded to change him to Nutramigen with no success and now he is on Elecare. I am not seeing any signifcant improvement, he has been on Elecare for over a week now. Every change and step we have taken has been with my prompting and research. I can't find any further information. We have an appt. with a GI doctor but not for weeks. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do next? Or better formulas out there?
Thanks My Poor

Abigail reacted to BioGaia when she was 5 months old...it says that it *may* contain milk protein, although when I called they assured me it was cultured off of human milk and they had had no complaints. I believe, in looking back, that it set us back and even may have brought on more bleeding, b/c it took me a few weeks to make the connection. She definitely got better when I stopped it. Yours is 16 months now, though, so she may not be as sensitive. BioGaia advertises heavily in ped offices...so that may be the only one your ped knows about to recommend. It was nice, though, in that the drops are so easy to give. They also make straws that are super easy to use as well.

NE Mom: Just be sure that your allergist will also test for IgG food sensitivites. Most allergists only test for IgE allergies, which is the immediate-response allergens. For most people, they would already be aware of any IgE allergies that they have. Best wishes!

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you! I hope you can enjoy this holiday that is so centered on food ;)

I talked to our pediatrician about probiotics & he said it would be a good idea to start giving them to my 16 month old daughter. he recommended BioGaia, anyone know anything about this brand?

I am also going to plan to take one in our next pregnancy!

Jill and Melanie-
I have also made an appointment to see an allergist so I can avoid foods that may cause problems in our next pregnancy! THANKS!

OK, help!! Either one of my children dumped ALL of my emails in my inbox, or somehow my email service lost my entire inbox, but I no longer have any emails. Could somebody forward me the email/articles that I have sent many people from Dr. Newman? Thank you so much!

NE Mom: Just to be another voice... but it would seem that it would be important to avoid your own food intolerances during a pregnancy, w/o worrying too much about the *maybes*. I have seen study after study showing that avoiding foods in pregnancy does not change intolerances/allergies after birth. BUT, keeping your intestine in good health is VERY important, i.e. keeping away from your own problem foods, having lots of good bacteria, etc. This keeps your digestive tract from being too porous, allowing large proteins to pass from you to your baby and your milk. As an anecdote, I have 5 children. Only my last has had severe food intolerances. The only thing that was different was that this time I craved plain whole yogurt, so I ate a lot of it. I really don't think that made a difference but I mention it anyway. Why my last? Who knows..I think it is just her. All of us have some mild dairy intolerances, but never anything like my last. We all avoid straight milk and yogurts, but in the past I have eaten cheese and butter. They also can all eat gluten, and I can't. So, I'm not sure that avoiding all of those things in pregnancy will really make a difference, but if you feel confident that you can meet your nutritional needs doing it, go for it! A great guide for a pregnancy diet is here: http://www.bradleybirth.com/PD.aspx I would try to substitute carefully.

NE Mom: Do you personally have any food sensitivities? I ask because if you do and you are ingesting those foods, then your body would be creating antibodies which could be passed on to the baby. I found out when breastfeeding my 3rd child on the TED that I am sensitive to both dairy & gluten. I am still free of these items today.

For me personally, I have made the decision that if I had another child I would eliminate dairy, gluten, peanuts, chocolate & tomatoes for the entire pregnancy & breastfeeding. The first two foods I know I'm sensitive to (as well as my 3 children), and the last 3 foods my 3rd child was also very sensitive to. I personally, would also choose to take fish oil & probiotics the entire pregnancy & breastfeeding as well. Best wishes on your decision.

Thanks for your input about eliminations during pregnancy ladies!
1 person says eliminating during entire pregnancy makes a difference
1 person says take a good probiotic & elimate for 3rd trimester
1 person says 3rd trimester elimination does not promise a healthier baby, but makes the beggining a little less difficult.

I guess from this information I might eliminate Milk, and Soy for just the 3rd trimester. Can anyone else weigh in on eliminating Milk and Soy during pregnancy (first, last or all 3 trimesters)?

Nikki -The only probiotic we have tried so far is Culturelle, Do you need a perscription for Florajen? With the lack of research, Are OBGYNs usually open to this?

HeidiLJ - I live in NW Omaha! Do they have anything like that here that you know of (what an exciting idea-playdates with other MSPI kids-not having to worry about every snack & cup people bring).

Cathianne- That's funny, I thought I would go crazy on dairy when we weaned too. I had planned on an all cheese dinner week. Between my daughter wanting to eat what I eat & flus and sinus issues Dairy just didnt even sound like a good idea, so I still use Rice milk 3 months after weaning. It all feels so challenging when you start but after over a year, it becomes your "new normal".
