Uh, actually, I use RSS at work... when articles of intereste come up (mainly security related), I read them. If I'm taking a break (happens just about as often as the cafine and nicoteen adicted coworkers break for their habits), I have been known to read non-work related sites, including but not limited to:

  fark.com
  boingboing.net
  memepool.com
  etc.

Those first three are the biggest offenders in the failure to rate and lable NSFW sites (actually fark.com has gotten much better recently)...

...and yes, you do have a responsibility to your readers. check your logs... find out how many of them read from work. It's simply not that hard to do. I will lose readers if the lose their jobs. There are plenty of cool sites that summarize and resummarize *exactly* the same material you cover. Hell, all you have to do is loadup dailyroation.com or subscribe to the coolsites RSS feed to understand just how much duplicated material there actually is among all these crappy little blogs.

/m1 well, what would you say the NSFW standard is? Anything with nipples? How about anything with sound? Things that don't look like news articles? How about setting up a proxy that will reformat news pages to look like an excel spreadsheet window (like old video games with panic buttons)? I find it hard to believe that there are many workplaces where it's okay the cruise blogs on the clock.. Yet people expect links to be refined and annotated with what someone who doesn't work where you work thinks is work appropriate? Are we just talking about porn??? Porn is everywhere, google isn't even "safe for work" by that standard.

The NSFW standard is very simple:

Anything that gets me fired; no, I don't trust your judgment.

And that would make the bulk of the internet off-limits during the work hour. Not very realistic is it? ...and yes, I have found work related things of intersted on boing boing that eventualy ended as part of the IT environment at work. Doesn't happen very often, but it does happen.

Hey, if browsing your RSS feeds from work get you wound up in a knot, I'll be more than happy to drop it. At least boingboing provies summaries instead of just a link; none the less, I don't dare click on the links while I'm at work.
With RSS, watching "non-work related things" is far less intensive, hence accepted.

...and yeah, I occassionaly stumble across a goatse.cx link at work, but I'm sure to make a note about the context and self-report is necessary.

"and yes, you do have a responsibility to your readers"

Oh PUhhhhleeeze.... Go try & tell that to Harlan Ellison, would ya?
heh.

I mean, you are a grown adult, eh? YOU need to be responsible for what you're looking at while at work. duh. Your job is your responsibility.

completely safe for work

Re /m2
Rather than a proxy, get some of the zap bookmarklets from
this site. Someone coming by? Zap all plugins, or zap all
images, or linearize the page and suddenly it is very safe:

/m4 great. Now my website is down for 12 hours thanks to the "slashdot" effect. Is this where I'm supposed to curse and rant and point out that my lawyers never gave you explicit permission to link to my website?

Oh, well. Tomorrow is another day.

Hey, Eli... thanks for the bookmarklets. I like!

Macki, probably anything you would even remotely consider posting on rotten would qualify, for starters...

did all these trolls come from your site?
