Yes, Yes, but When do the Poets Start Getting the Money?

New NEA head cheese Dana Gioia in the Kansas City Star.

Every Now and Then It's Good to Remind Ourselves What the Other Side Thinks

A conservative American's opinion on Dana Gioia and the NEA... I wonder if Gioia has seen this. His head might implode. (Hey, American Ninjas, can your conservatives ever write in anything but this over-the-top, silly rhetoric? I find it snicker-worthy that the site name is "intellectual conservative.")

Earlier this week at the Republican governors conference Bush labeled the NEA a terrorist organization. I think the NEA needs to respond to this.

You've got to be kidding! Damn right the NEA should respond.

What will Bush do next? Invade the Kennedy Center? Is that where the WMDs are?

Gioia Is Changing the NEA

From "an organization which has traditionally seen itself as serving the arts community into an agency which serves the American people.'' I guess what he means to say is that those who have ponied up to the trough for the last little while will be feeding next to some new folks. I just find it so hard to trust anyone who has W's support.

He's Such a Gioia to Be Around...

NEA head Dana profiled. "The danger with consensus art, though, is blandness and mediocrity; indeed the strongest argument against federal involvement in the arts has always been that Washington would stifle eccentricity and risk-taking -- the mechanisms that propel progress in the arts no less than in the marketplace. "

Why Dana Gioia Matters

Because he's making a career out of explaining why things like poetry and literature matter. A Bush appointee and big-businessman. Somebody hit me.
