There's a book by Pat Murphy called The City Not Long After, a magical realist SF book set in the Bay Area after a world-decimating plague. Mantid's post reminds me: one of the book's characters renames himself The Machine after he survives the plague, and builds scores of just this kind of largish-scale solar-powered autonomous machine.

The modular robots look very interesting. k0re, have you played with beam robots, such as the ones solarbotics.com sells? I've been homebrewing them for a few years because they are so much cheaper than "real" robots, but its time to start to work with microprocessors. Today's dream is a ranch where I can let largish-scale autonomous machines (ideally 4-legged walkers) navigate and cope with weather while feeding from the sun.
