Nelson's question is significant: When did Boing Boing comments get so bitter?

Burning man is teh sux.

You are a fucking tourist.

Even if you are naked, high on whatever, and in the desert, you are still a privileged, pampered tourist.

I saw a guy wearing a great t-shirt in the Castro (San Francisc's gay mecca) recently. It had the burning man "logo" but said "Flaming Man." Awesome.

So is Flaming Guy a satellite version of the Ibiza Summer Experience (http://www.20six.de/SBD)? I mean, we're talking about real sophisticated rich folk with time and money to blow, and, oh, Blow (or x or whatever else you crazy creative types use to get all philosophically insightful).

"The 'love' is not something that you can keep, hold smell or touch; it is only something you experience." - right from the Ibiza page. Wow!

The Lindy Hop? Twenty-Three Skidoo?

I just wanted to know if Gorgar is any relation to Freemdoom. Because that's really cool if he is.

I was thinking... and it almost seems that burning man was one of the first "flash mobs"

So why don't you folks go to a nice sports bar, eat some nachos, and shut the fuck up?

"Jumped the shark" hasn't just jumped the shark, it jumped it around spring '99.

As for Xeni, sometimes it does feel like I'm the homeless guy and she's talking about how comfy her couch is, but at least it's interesting. And if I don't like it, I go somewhere else.

the big difference is Cory is ceaselessly entertaining.

xeni's just... ceaseless.

Lisa, blame Wired News, not Wired Magazine. the magazine has had an explicit no-Burning Man policy for years.

I have to say I used to like BB much more.

You're wrong, OT Person, Cory is the biggest self-promoter. BB has turned into a competition over who can self-promote the most, Cory or Xeni. No wonder Mark fled to a remote desert Island.

If I go to burning man will somebody there give me a job?

It must be nice to have the money and free time to get to dick around in the desert and eat X.

"It can't be turned into data in any useful way. You can't informatize it by blogging it, filming it or taking pictures of it, because so much of it can't be translated into information."

Maybe you can't, but darn it if Xeni isn't going to try. I don't know if she got that old laptop to use out there, but you can bet there will be BB updates and links to her phonecamblog, either during or after the burn is all over.

BurningMan jumped the shark years ago...

"The important thing about Burning Man is that it is the most experiential phenomenon I can think of..."

What in hell is an experiental phenomenon?

Burning Man = many old (and soon to be old) boring men and women who think they are edgy because they meet in the desert. If you really think you're edgy for meeting in the desert while using high tech, try going to Iraq. Burning Man is l a m e .

What 'would' be edgy is if all those people figured out a way to wash their asses regularly while out there. No, pseudo-post-apocalyptic-funk is "not" sexy, thank you.

Okay, this month's wired features:
-- Neal Stephenson on "why cyberpunk is dead" This is news?
-- A piece on "extreme programming," a topic which I saw my husband reading a book about years ago,
-- and Burning Man.

Do the editors of Wired get out much anymore?

wow. burning man. that sounds neat. ever hear of the internet? I've heard that's pretty cool too.

[sarcasm off]

ever notice that xeni is the biggest self-promoter? "hey, look what I did here! look at me, I'm with shaq!"

Jeff,

That is a totally unfair comment. Xeni also writes about things in San Francisco, and strange sexual news wherever it occurs!

Xeni, I'm confused. Is Burning Man in LA or NY? And if it's not, why bother writing about it?

I hate you. I hate you so intensely that I a going to have to take a little walk to the break room and get a second up of coffee, before the boss comes in and gives the weekly assignments. And then, when I get back to my cube, I am going to hate you some more.
