Being hysterical when dealing with the HMO is always a good thing....
My wife is a nurse at a fairly large hospital. As a result, I get to hear about some of the weirdest stuff....
It's not necessarily the medical stuff that bothers me.. it's the behavior of some patients. Take for example, the young couple who wanted to be paid for giving up their baby (illegal in this state.)
They had already arranged for a couple to adopt the baby... said couple shows up in hospital... gets to HOLD the baby... and then the father says "IF you still want the baby, you're going to have to follow us to $jurisdiction, and pay us $amount."

"I will never step foot in another hot tub again."
Hey, you can get "hot tub lung" just by being in the same room....

Well! It turns out I wasn't far off. OK, I'm not going to die, but it was bacterial, and it came from a hot tub. I will never step foot in another hot tub again.

Actually, the organism which causes necrotizing fasciitis is a member of the strep family -- its a bacteria, not a virus.
Generally speaking, I would expect a call to a dermatologist's office voicing infection with that particular nastiness as a concern to prompt a reply of, "go directly to your nearest emergency department immediately."
The result of which would be that you see me or one of my colleagues whereupon we'll evaluate you, reassure you that you do *not* have necrotizing fasciitis and quite possibly refer you back to your derm-crittur unless we happen to be sure about what kind of rash weirdness you're sporting.

You might give Jerome Groopman a try. He and Gawande are both frequent medical contributors to The New Yorker.

"Complications" left me hungry for more real-life medical thrillers (especially since I gave up cable TV and the ever-bloody TLC). Any recommendations? Thoughts on flesh-eating bacteria?
