Press Release

Exhibition „The Cultural Heritage Programme“ at Bagh-e Babur

The Federal Foreign Office has been funding the preservation and reconstruction of historically and culturally important sites throughout the world by means of the “Cultural Heritage Programme“. All projects funded by the programme are currently being shown to the international public in an exhibition that tours around the world.

Between 19 and 29 June, this exhibition will also be shown in Kabul, in the pavilion of

Bagh-e Babur.

A number of historically and culturally important monuments and sites have been preserved or restored with funding from the “Cultural Heritage Programme” of the Federal Foreign Office throughout the past years. Several projects in Afghanistan benefited from this funding, among others the reconstruction of Bagh-e Babur in Kabul, the preservation of the ancient city of Heart, the conservation of the fragments of the Buddhas in Bamiyan, etc.

Since the beginning of this year, the exhibition showing all those projects in the world funded by this programme is touring around the world.

This exhibition will also be shown in Kabul from 19 until 29 June 2006 in the pavilion of Baghe Babur. This gives us the unique opportunity to show the exhibition at one site, that is actually part of the programme.

All interested people are kindly invited to enjoy the exhibition in a unique setting!

From book review by Ahmed Rashid, author of Taliban, in the New York Times book review.

http://www.nybooks.com/articles/19098?email

Bush visited Kabul for the first time on March 1, 2006, for a few hours, where he remarked on how brilliantly everything was going. In his more lucid moments, Zahir Shah, the former king of Afghanistan, now ninety-two years old, recalls the first US president to visit Kabul. That was President Dwight Eisenhower, who also came for a one-day visit, on December 9, 1959, when, at forty-five, the King ruled the country and was considered young. Shah remembers that he asked Eisenhower for more economic aid for his impoverished country, as well as diplomatic help to improve Afghanistan's deteriorating relationship with Pakistan, and a sustained US presence to protect the country. The help he received was meager and ineptly supplied. Some things never change.
