New NATO Senior Civilian Representative
in Afghanistan
Appointment of Ambassador Fernando Gentilini
The NATO Secretary General, Mr. Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, is pleased to announce the appointment of Ambassador Fernando Gentilini of Italy to the position of NATO Senior Civilian Representative in Afghanistan.

Mr. Gentilini has a long and distinguished career in the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including senior positions as the European Union High Representative’s Personal Representative to Kosovo in 2004 and most recently as Deputy Diplomatic Advisor to the Italian Prime Minister since August 2006.

Mr. Gentilini replaces Ambassador Daan Everts who served as NATO’s second Senior Civilian Representative in Afghanistan from August 2006 to December 2007.

Following Ambassador Everts’ departure in December 2007, Ambassador Maurits R. Jochems ably fulfilled the duties of NATO Senior Civilian Representative in an acting capacity from January 2008.

As Senior Civilian Representative, Mr. Gentilini will be responsible for carrying forward the political-military aspects of the Alliance’s assistance to the Afghan Government. He will work closely with ISAF, the United Nations and other co-ordinating bodies established by the international community and the Afghan Government in Kabul.

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

THE AFGHANISTAN SOCIETY – Promoting Afghanistan’s Cause

I am writing to let you know about a new initiative for Afghanistan: an opportunity to maintain a professional link between all those who have worked there and have a passion for a continued success in the country.

Please see below for full details on how to join, stay in touch and debate through the society’s Google and Facebook groups.

In due course formal launches will take place in Kabul and most probably London, Brussels and New York.

Most interestingly the website and Google/Facebook groups will feature links to the most recent think tank reports, briefings, opinion and analysis from leading writers and organisations; members of The Afghanistan Society will also write with their views to encourage debate, discussion and ideas which will receive the widest readership possible.

I hope you will support this worthwhile endeavour, as nothing else exists to bring together such a vast and cumulative experience of Afghanistan.

Please do forward this to your colleagues.

With best wishes,

Dominic Medley
THE AFGHANISTAN SOCIETY has been formed to promote Afghanistan’s cause and bring together all those who are passionate and concerned for the future of the country and its people. The society will advocate for more support and progress in Afghanistan by highlighting the need for a greater and continued commitment and confidence in the country. Through an active online presence, articles and occasional meetings the society will aim to strengthen links between Afghanistan and the world. Drawing on experts who have worked in Afghanistan the society will offer opinions and solutions on the best steps to be taken to ensure the continued future of the country as a full member of the international community. Initially membership is free and open to all via subscription to an online group. In due course full paid up membership will be developed, financial support sourced and society events and publications launched.

My husband Jamie and I have been living in Afghanistan for a year now. Jamie is on a posting with the British Embassy in Kabul and I work for an organisation that makes radio, theatre and television programmes for social development. I started writing my blog as soon as we arrived because small details are quickly forgotten, and I knew I would never have time to explain them all to family and friends. Getting to know a place is like slowly peeling an onion - each layer leads to another - but the more I learn about Afghanistan, the less I understand; there are fewer answers and more questions than this time a year ago. But an experience is made up of the people with whom you share it. My Afghan colleagues are the reason I have grown to love a country that is not my own, and it has been the best start to married life I could have wished for.
