Less than exciting account on my blog, as I work in a secure government facility in western PA, and our generators immediately kicked on. They have enough diesel power to keep us going for at least 5 days. I did find it odd that a number of friends on IRC in other states noted that their power also went out and would have to shut down before the UPS ran out.

My own account is up Here. Not too much there - I was home in the burbs at the time. Lucky me was running late and was supposed to be on an E train under the East river when everything went to hell.

My ISP is on W18th St and I haven't been about to resolve the
hostnames (let alone ping machines) since yesterday.

My account (which links to pictures) is here.

There's not too much to say. It was dark and relatively calm. For those who didn't get stranded (and even some of those who did), it was mostly an excuse to sit outside and drink beer.

I did get some good pictures of Times Square though.

Ftrain has some:

Then of course there's:

http://blackout.textamerica.com/

*I* logged on battery power calling CompuServe in New York from Toronto at 00:02 hours. I validated my HTML and went to bed, where I had unremitting nightmares of restored electricity.

These really shouldn't be hidden in a discussion page.

Yeah that sucks. It was funny how people are making fun of France about all those poeple dying from their recent heat wave and ironically we get with a blackout. The truth behind is that we have a very intergrated electrical g rid system that is run and outletted by many companies. The way the energy is sorted and distributed like the concept of bandwith in your computer vis a vis your computer itself were run by companies like enron. This show show that that either ecologically or politically that society as we know it can be shut down. Welcome to the 21st Century and I hope that everyone whose lights were turn out can go back to heir normal lives.

Just got to my office to reboot the servers now that power is back on in Midtown, and I pulled the pictures off my camera.

There are so many people hidden in the cement pillars of this town... it's amazing when we all pour and splash out into the streets, flowing like water into any available space. There were some amazing images to capture thursday. I didn't get all of them, but I got a few.

It's interesting to chart the development of online media by disaster coverage. This is undoubtedly the best-covered blackout in the history of the world.

I add another bit - an account of my first overnight sleepover in John F. Kennedy International Airport:

Ya man. When the lights went off, I was in Britt, Iowa as a delegate to the National Hobo Convention, and everything was fine there. So what's the problem?
