Any thoughts on what nanotech is and what is not?

One of the toughest calls is in nanoelectronics. Conventional chip-making has already crossed the 100-nm line for transistor size. And the transistor itself works because of quantum physics.
But purists contend that a Pentium is not even close to a nanotechnological system.
I don't fully agree, but will concede the point until the IC business gets beyond photolithography and into something more clearly nano--directed self-assembly of materials or layers, perhaps use of nanostructured building blocks such as carbon nanotubes, silicon nanowires or quantum dots.
When the parts become more 'truly' nano, I think we can say the same for the macro strucuture.

So what's wrong with Taniguchi's original definition (1974)?:
'Nano-technology' is the production technology to get the extra high accuracy and ultra fine dimensions, i.e. the preciseness and fineness on the order of 1 nm (nanometer), 10(superscript)-9 meter in length. The name of 'Nano-technology' originates from this nanometer. In the processing of materials, the smallest bit size of stock removal, accretion or flow of materials is probably of one atom or one molecule namely 0.1~0.2 nm in length. Therefore, the expected limit size of fineness would be of the order of 1 nm. Accordingly, 'Nano-technology' mainly consists of the processing of separation, consolidation and deformation of materials by one atom or one molecule.
N. Taniguchi, "On the Basic Concept of 'Nano-Technology'," Proc. Intl. Conf. Prod. Eng. Tokyo, Part II, Japan Society of Precision Engineering, 1974

Cassie-
I've always liked this definition:
Nanotechnology - "The design and implementation of functional devices with a size of less than 100 nm."

I believe that nanotechnology can be defined as "There are like these super small robots, and they can like turn your soup into people, so we'd all be like cannibals and stuff, except backwards."

the problem with nonatechnology is that you can`t define it without like admitting that it exists, and thats just plain RIGHT.
