Wild cucumbers are not edible, but the pioneers used a root tea for stomach troubles, and the indians used the pulverized root for a wide range of disorders. Interesting plant.

Just posted a whole week's worth of out-of-town blogs. My sabbatical in 2008 is just from rubber stamp conventions, I'll still be making and selling stamps, and of course blogging. The new peg stamp preparations are going slower than expected (some web site re-working is in order too) so yes, I'm afraid you might have to wait till November (or look in RSM cuz my ad shows all of them!).

I think the majority of stampers are not quite as organized as T.O.D., not to mention "aware" as to where their stamps came from. The majority of Meer Image stampers, by contrast, are quite nice!

The rotten leaf is beautiful.

You are going to make us wait until September to see the other 26 peg stamps???? September is *days* away.

I was really sorry to see a letter in the latest RSM that seemed to vindicate your move to mounted stamps only. The writer seemed to be saying how could anyone possibly be expected to keep track of where their unmounteds came from? I thought that was very sad. I can usually remember where a stamp came from and/or tell by the style, and I organize my storage by stamp company.

There were way more puns, it turns out, that I ever imagined. Here are some of my faves sent in by all of you: Parrot Dice (before I said the geometric symbols were nonsense); Parrot Dies (sent in by 2 people); Macawb! Him-a-layin (now that's thinking hard!)

Thanks everybody, that was fun!
Elaine  353
08-20-2007 04:34 PM pt (US)
All rules aside, it was fun. Actually, just after sending my last guess, I got the Him a lay in part and found that Cybele got there before me when I clicked back in. Steven, if you do him in skeleton, then you can call it Macawb. It is usually the puns that just come out without thought that are the best ones, but this one tops them all.
Steven Vander MeerPerson was signed in when posted  352

I recommend not posting your pun guesses here, for two reasons. If you're close but not quite - you might be helping out the competition. And, if you do get it right, I won't have your contact info - anyone could write to me and say "I'm "so-and-so" who won the contest. Instead, send your answer to me via the Contact page, and be sure to include your email address - thanks!
Cybele  351
08-19-2007 10:08 PM pt (US)
well points to you, too, Elaine, for the dark humor -- macawb. Oh, I can't resist -- a triple pun, Steven, once you make it into a stamp, there will be many "PARROT DIES"!

okay here's my stab at the dead parrot pun...."Him-a-layin'", as in he's physically laying on the stone slab, and "Himalayan" -- on a website about the Himalayas, they are described as "Where earth meets sky" --- so is this what it has to do with the picture, the parrot (a bird who flies, thus symbolizing "sky") has met the earth, symbolized by the stone slab??

Poor shrew...

Its ok to store the carvings just like that, as long as they are face up and one layer deep? Hmm. There's a thought. Mine are wrapped up in wax paper.

My boyfriend was crazy for the ATC I made with Sebastian. Normally, he doesn't get too excited about my stamping. I thought he would be more impressed by the pendant I made with the Giant Water Bug, but apparently not. Now I must make a birthday card for his brother, the herpetologist, with Eden.

Will you be turned the Ex Libris carving into a stamp? I would like one for myself. I'm enjoying seeing all of your carvings.

I use Staedler MasterCarve, it's great stuff. It's never crumbly, always very smooth and easy to cut. It has the occasional defect in the carving surface, air bubble or some such, but that's very minor. The MasterCarve is a bit softer than the original recipe for Staedler Mars Grand Plastic Erasers, I prefer the eraser material but they don't make 'em big like the carving blocks.

I think Staedtler Mastercarve is usually packaged as such and not sold in bulk. What Steven is using looks like Mastercarve to me. I just wish I could find some in a store, rather than online, but I can't find it anywhere.

Hi Steven, Where do you get your carving material? It looks like it's really smooth and makes very crisp, clean cuts, and I like how it's so thick. I've been carving stamps for a while, but all I seem to find at the local craft chain is either this super-thin pink stuff or this product which I think is Staedler Mastercarve which is very crumbly & delicate.

Thanks for the Lilac and Violet suggestions - I haven't begun the third yet but flowers are not my forte, and so I welcome suggestions as to what kind would be good.
I'm surprised raccoons are not extinct, I see so many unlucky ones on the road.

It was great to see you in Puyallup and to watch you carving the daisy--thank you! It's probably old hat to you, but it's a real thrill for us to meet the artists we admire.
I'm hoping your 3rd in a series flower will be a violet or a lilac.
The crows are even better "in person" -- I love how your work is so "anatomically correct." And it must have been some weird kind of Karma or life imitating art--we saw 3 Rocky "Roadkill" Racoons on the way home.
Thanks again for the blog.

In German, Meer means Sea. Mehr, pronounced the same, means more. Verdient, in context could mean "pay" or "earnings" Could be a pun, too. I'll have to look at it again. Loved the pictures from Holland. It is good to see your artistic evolving.

Cybele - not a bad idea, they would have to be solid black for sure. Dusty - that's funny because the model looked at that drawing and said it made her look real mad... at what I don't know.

Hi Steven -- I work as a mentor with mentally ill kids, and I just wanted to let you know they all LOVED the crow stamps -- I let them run amock with my stamp collection for a round robin journal project, and they all picked the crows. I love them, too -- any chance you would consider coming out with a smaller set of them? - I am really enjoying using them in my journal, but it would be so great to have them on a smaller scale, even though that would prob. lose a lot of detail -- but even the silouhettes are fantastic.

I love your idea/plan/project of an index card drawing every day--an addition that won't seem like much now but will trigger happy memories in as little as a month is to write on each one the date (oh, really),the time of day and your location at the time of the drawing. Okay, and an eye-witness weather report. Thanks again for sharing your blog.

yes, those embracing skeletons would make a great stamp...a human story, 5,000 yrs. old. I've somehow always felt remote and removed towards all those National Geographic stories about our ancestors, but I have to say that photo touched me -- it's neat to have a visual that really makes a connection through the ages...these weren't just Ancestors -- they were people with daily lives, who had emotions like fear and love, who cared about each other.

Raccoon Feed is not based on a photo, but on a sighting (I was driving at the time). Later on I did photograph lots of crows in a parking lot, and my birds are based on those photos. Did anyone see the photo in the news today of two ancient skeletons in an embrace? I might do a stamp of that.
