Media studies were part of the high school curriculum in Ontario until the Tories re-wrote the curriculum. Neo-cons are anti-media studies. It has nothing to do with artistic merit and everything to do with ideology.

Re: Will poetry die? No. It's a silly question. Poetry is ingrained in the human spirit. The human spirit cannot die, it can only suffer, wither, rebound.

I should also add that it amazes me how much poetry actually does get published in this country. As proprietor of www.danforthreview.com, I get sent dozens of poetry books for review. More than can possibly be reviewed even by a poetry-friendly publication. My mailbox is drowning in poetry. Enough. Stop!

I guess the question then becomes why isn't media studies in many high schools? It isn't as though film hasn't reached the point where it's considered to have artistic merit.

That's the kind of thinking that gets you made Corporal, Penboy.

You get an honourary gold shuriken for that one.

Interesting thought. Getting a book of poetry published does seem to be a Catch-22, in that no one wants to publish your book until you're well known, and you're not well known until your book is published. I wonder if there could be a way to encourage the media not just to review poetry books more, but to cover readings and events where (in theory) new talent is cropping up.

The other part of it is that film (which is immensely popular) and television are generally not studied at the high school level, while everyone endures how tedious poetry is made in our high schools. I remember stumbling across a 20th century poem that meant a lot to me when I was in high school, but it wasn't planned, or part of a course. So maybe if film and TV was dissected by painfully boring teachers, it would level the playing field.

I wonder how this issue would change if the media gave poetry the same attention it gives fiction and non-fiction. Would poetry been seen as manistream? Would the looming demise of verse simply evaporate? Any thoughts?

The Dead Poets' Society

Is poetry heading the way of the dodo? Does anyone care?
