Rather than the acupuncturist, I'd prefer to know the preferred canlit psychotherapist .

You should check your posts for spelling and grammar before you tear a strip off McLaren. That said, you're right. My doctor is telling to eat right and excercise every chance he gets, so in this instance McLaren is actually full of shit.

"Chinese medicine, on the other hand, is heavily concerned with diet, exercise and the connection between the mind and the body -- all factors that Western medicine traditionally overlooks."
Yes, Leah, that's right. Western medicine has entire overlooked the concepts of diet and excercise. Very good.
Is there no begining to this woman's body of knowledge? Does no one at the Globe even look at her work before they run it? She's still an idiot, I'm afraid.

Who's poking the Canlit celebritiesLeah McLaren went a-questing. Meet Dr Zhao, acupuncturist to the stars: Ms. Sharpe believes Dr. Zhao, who has never advertised, has become the acupuncturist to Toronto's literati by pure serendipity. "In certain social circles people are just very open to talking about their health," she says. "This is just something that's happened to her. One person tells another person. It just so happens the people are Michael Ondaatje telling Graeme Gibson telling [the playwright] David Young." This article needed a photojournalist; pictures of our favourite Canadian writers stuck full of pins. The mere idea is so...cool. Home

Francis Bacon was a hypocondriacOkay, that's stretching it, I'll admit. But apparently he was inspired by medical textbooks. Among the 7,500 items including dirty paint brushes, books, photographs, drawings and slashed canvases found strewn across the floor of Bacons chaotic studio in South Kensington, London, there were sheets ripped from books containing images of diseased toes. Twelve other medical textbooks were found in the studio. Some contain relentlessly gruesome images, such as A Colour Atlas of Forensic Pathology and A Colour Atlas of Nursing Procedures, she wrote. Hey, I've got that one, too. Home

Sex, insanity and artIs there any more to life? the results suggest that the creativity of some artists is fuelled by the unique world view mental illness can provide, but without the completely debilitating aspects of the condition. Instead, the artists are able to direct their creativity into artistic projects. The second part of the survey found that compared with the general population, artists claimed to have had twice as many partners since the age of 18, and the number of partners increased with the seriousness with which they pursued their art. Am I missing out on something here? Home

Ninjas:
Thanks for posting this. I prescribe books on occasion, usually those suited to a particular literate personality. They can be powerful therapeutic tools... though they're never good when people are really sick. You have to have motivation, enough energy to pick up a book first.

Do it yourself for the mentally illSave the Wales! Self-help books are being prescribed by Welsh doctors to mentally ill patients and guess what, it seems to work. Nothing like a little empowerment. Home
