"Slides into a huge mug of beer"
Odd coincidence. I often do that myself.

Think stadium also has a character that slides into a huge mug of beer when a Brewer parks one. He's mostly out of reach of the visiting ballclub.

Seriously, something about these "walk-around" characters seems to bring out a violent response in some people. Theme parks have scores of incidents every year where little kids just start wailing on the people in the big character heads. That's one of the reasons the walk-arounds have handlers.
I'm with Stefan on the clowns. I vote for internment camps. . .

I saw the actual footage of this event on the news tonight. And I have to say it was the funniest thing I've seen all week. The quick smack. The sausage and the other guy hitting the ground. The 2 other mascotts stumbling around in dismay, 1 turning around briefly and then trying to flee, the other one trying to help his downed comrade to her feet.. But she just won't get up! The 'Sausage Woman Speaks' interview was equally hilarious. She LOOKED like the kind of person would would be in a mascot outfit. Huge grin, bubbly, didn't stop smiling the whole time. Apparently, she wasn't really mad about the whole thing either.

Awww, c'mon, this guy literally couldn't help himself.
Mascot costumes trigger an ancient flight-or-fight reflex in healthy adult males. If that healthy adult male happens to be holding a hefty club when the costumed weirdentity appears, well, damn, can you blame the guy for coming out swinging?
Especially when there's a herd of the things, and they look like food?
Don't get me going on clowns.

Am I the only one who played 'Duck Duck Goose with a Paper Bat'?
Same basic rules as duck-duck-goose, players stand in a circle while the it walks around behind them. Then the it puts the bat in someone's hand and runs around the circle to replace the selected person. In duck-duck-goose, if you get tagged by that person you don't get to go there. In the paper bat version you can always go there, but there is the question of how many times you get hit first.
We would use a Sunday NY Times rolled into a bat and tied with string. The game ended when the bat was beyond repair.

Re: Gary's comments: ESPN has a very amusing (and Smoking-Gun-ish) "investigation" of the incident:

Am I the only computer geek here that hated jocks in high school and hopes this guy gets in some serious trouble?
Or is it just that this story is preposterously funny?

I think we need to investigate this, because its suspicious. We didnt hear from the Kielbasa who came in second. There were four sausages. Or were there five? Was there a sausage on the grassy knoll?
And I dont think Borghoff (the winner) himself is above suspicion. Not only did he win the race, but he was available to the press after such a tragedy involving his fellow sausages.
Did Borghoff have previous contact with Simon? Was he paid off to allow Borghoff to win?

If freedom-loving americans cannot walk around in sausage suits without fear of bodily harm from sports stars, then surely the terrorists have won. Edited 07-10-2003 03:24 PM
