Solution: El Cheapo USB Compact Flash card reader.

I'm with Christian. I have the PowerShot G3, and ended up getting a card reader. They're fairly cheap now, and have the benefit of reading the card at a faster rate, not to mention eliminating the need for powering up your camera to transfer images.

I bought my PCMCIA adapter for $5, at Sears, of all places!

My G3 doesn't mount either. I think Canons just don't do that...

If you've got a (Titanium) PowerBook, get yourself a cheap PC-CARD adapter (around 10$/Euro) for the CF card or by one of those USB card readers (AFAIK no big investment, too).

I have a Nikon Coolpix 3100, and it has an option in the menus to set the USB mode. There are two choices and one of them makes it show up as a storage device. iPhoto works either way. As a storage device, the Mac complains when I turn off the camera without dragging the camera volume to the Trash, and as a USB camera, you can't download movie clips with iPhoto.

That's disappointing. So... can anyone point me to anything that explains why this is so? What's different about the ones that mount and the ones that dont?

I believe you are correct, my new Powershot S50 doesn't mount as a drive unless I put the CF chip into a PCMCIA adapter and stick it in my PowerBook. There is a Canon disk mounter utility for OS 9, it comes with the cameras but it doesn't run in Classic.

I could be wrong on this, but I don't believe the Canon cameras mount as drives - my S45 doesn't appear as a volume when I connect it, either.
