Anyone have any research about how much time it takes to support laptop users versus desktop users?

Some excellent posts about hard drive speed in the desktop versus laptop debate. I think the core issue is individual usage. If you are using your laptop for high end graphics/video the hard drive speed is a huge issue. For just about everything else though the speed of the hard drive will not matter at all. I think you also have to remember that heat is an issue too and certainly the small enclosure of a laptop is not very forgiving to heat at all. All mechanical devices generate heat so a hard drive that spins faster has to obey the basic laws of physics. If you own a 12' PowerBook (I do) then the heat issue becomes very real. My PB gets real hot as it is with the slower drive and I have to believe a 5400 or 7200 rpm drive would make this situation even worse.
I still think the eMac (had one and loved it) or the new iMacs (I have 2 now including a 1 GHz 17") are the best possible home solutions. DVD players are cheap so using a PB as a defacto DVD player isn't as attractive as it may sound especially since the DVD drives in most players are going to be faster than our PB DVD drives. If you travel a lot the debate becomes moot. I can't imagine switching entirely to a PB based home system (no matter what Steve Jobs says) because I do want the larger screens, more ports and the faster, more advanced infrastructure of a desktop. The solution is simple. Buy an iMac and an iBook. The cost is less than a new PB 17" and you have Apple's famous BOBW solution (first used with the original Duos). Best of Both Worlds.

My next book will also be the center of my entertainment system. Great for home, on the road, or at my parents' technology challenged home.

I moved to a PowerBook (from my old rock-solid SE/30) in late 1995 and haven't looked back. Even the horror of that PB 5300 (eventually replaced in 1997 by Apple with a 1400) didn't deter me. I still have the 1400, which serves as a link to my old SCSI scanner.
Now my main PB is a Pismo running 10.2.6 with 768 MB RAM and a Fujitsu 30 GB drive and things are going really well. I have no current plans (or need) to upgrade just at the moment but whenever I do it'll be to another PowerBook no doubt.
Why do I like the 'Book? It's the size ('form factor') mainly, I suppose. I do hate (well, my hands hate) the keyboard and trackpad and thus I have my Pismo mounted on a Laptop Laidback stand (with display at a comfortable eye level), allowing me to use a Kensington optical mouse and a macally ikey keyboard. So I've got a laptop functioning as a desktop with a few typical desktop peripherals.
And, if I want to watch a DVD, I can easily pick up the Pismo, carry it into the living room and hook it up to my TV.
