Hello everyone - I'm new to this world. I have just come out of the closet ... I was a closet tech & web girl. And I wanted to know if anyone can help me. I'm a creative writer/journalist and want to create my own site for my newsletter on politics, life, love, sex, work, etc.... But, I wanted to create a "dialogue" of sorts by having a bulletin board or a forum where people can participate. I am overwhelmed with web hosts and could use any advice.
Thank you for your time ... and happy holidays!

Peace,
Chris

http://www.nearlyfreespeech.net/

They charge $1 per GB download, and 1cent per megabyte per month storage. SSH access, perl, php, etc. MySQL database. No monthly fee.

Nice feature for amateurs is you pay upfront. Lodge $20 (or whatever) to your account by credit card, and then it gets run down as people download from your site

I've found the responsiveness of the staff (by email and forums) pretty good too.

I see you've already decided, but I've been happy with http://www.webhost4life.com/. The price is good, and the support has always gotten back to me promptly. Wish I could call them instead of just sending email, but that's a minor inconvenience.

If anyone looks at the site and decides they want to sign up, let me know: I can get a referral bonus. :-) gNfOiStPzAgMer@nyx.net

Hi...
I really like dailyrotation.com and trust them...
they've been running this ad for years.
and I think they use projectgeek.net too
It has some great features, like your own shell account, full support for your php etc.
(I think)
anyway, give them a look...
PROJECT GEEK.... Shell City's full featured web hosting service.... $10/month'll get you 100 megs of disk and 20 gigs of transfer. $25/month'll get you 500 megs of disk and 50 gigs of transfer.....GO THERE!

Best support I've ever gotten is from Tigertech.net, local operation, $4.95 for a small website like 20 MB. Great people.

For the larger stuff we do (like MagazineArt.org and TravelHistory.org) we now use hummingbirdhosting.com, which is run by a couple of Aussies but apparently located physically in Houston. $10/month for 1GB storage, 15 GB bandwidth. 5 domains, if that is important. I don't know about their support; haven't had any problems and so haven't had to ask.

I can tell you lots of places to stay away from. One of them, FeaturePrice.com, is worthy of Greek tragedy, according to the info I've read on YourHostSucks.com.

Yes, I can second Dreamhost as a great hosting site. I've been with them for a couple of years, and service is excellent. The web admin is easy to use, and you get a lot of stuff for a little $. Full cgi, mysql, webmail, pop, spam filtering, more space than I need, etc., etc.. I've noticed that their servers are well-stocked with libraries (for php, perl and such) so pretty much anything you'd want to run there will.

No monthly fee. You read that correctly. Rather, they charge you $2/gig for bandwidth, and $1.50/month/100Mb, and basically nothing else.

No web based config but excellent technical support. Paypal only.

I'm loving Dreamhost. It starts at $9.95 a month, but for what you get SSH, Samba, MySQL... It is worth it. The stability is worth it as well.

I know a ton of people who use DH and have heard no complaints.

Another vote for http://www.icdsoft.com - they're only 5 bucks a month, and they do everything I want them to, have neat web interfaces, allow you to run fun stuff like phpBB and MovableType, give you 100mb space/5gb d/l a month, and are based in a big shiny building in Hong Kong, which is a bonus as far as I'm concerned.

I've had http://mikelietz.org hosted by http://www.digitalspace.net for a number of years and I've been very happy. For a mere three bucks a month (two when I started) I get all the webspace I need (10 MB), shell access and a rudimentary web interface (there's a demo at the digitalspace site) for administration, perl and mysql for my coder's aspirations, free webmail (with no space quota at all), and a couple other features that I can't come up with. My biggest complaint is that the server logs do not save HTTP-REFERERs and as such I do not know what lurid Google searches lead to my pages. Otherwise I am happy, running hand-coded HTML and perl as well as a fully functional movabletype installation.

EDIT: Now I remember. Customer service is very existent, though I have had little experience with them. They've got live chat and phone help many hours of the day, but not all, so don't run your pacemaker-pinger on their stuff. At least, not for the cheapest package. And also I know that PHP works since the webmail system is horde (http://www.horde.org/).

Draw a ven diagram -- three circles partially overlapping each other in the middle of the page. One is "fast/reliable." One is "generous bandwidth." One is "cheap." For the most part, with webhosts you have to pick two.

I use Timberland hosting. $6 a month chock full of goodies. Tech support is e-mail only, but they are FAST. I've had responses in 30 minutes or less for normal questions, 15 minutes or less for emergencies.

I researched affordable hosting high and low last year for a friend's blog I was setting up. We ended up with Hosting Matters and have been happy. But others in the running were InsiderHosting ( http://insiderhosting.com/ ), Corner Host ( http://cornerhost.com/ )and Pair. I would would ping their servers to find out where they are located, which will affect how quickly your site loads, etc. Also, do they own their own network operations center. Or are they just leasing a server in someone else's building. And, read the message boards, especially the announcements section where they post server downtime messages. I almost went with Corner Host, which is basically a one-man show, but supposedly very responsive to customers. Pair is on the other end of the spectrum, a huge hosting company, exceptional, rock-solid reliability, but a little more expensive. And they're service techs can be kinda curt. They don't have time for hand-holding. Hope that helps.

Ryan mentioned powweb.

powweb limits your total IMAP storage to 15MB.

Also, I was with powweb (a brief dalliance from pair) when they did a data center upgrade/move. Almost no warning, screwed their own DNS, and resulted in over three days of downtime with very little communication from their customer service folks. Where I work, people would have lost their jobs over that fiasco. So powweb lost my biz.

Went right back to pair.

I second the motion for vervehosting. I've been using them for about 18 months now and have had only one outage. The online control panel is great and their customer service is super fast. If you're doing any Cold Fusion or Online Sales type stuff, I've found that hostmysite.com is also excellent in a lot of the same ways as verve, but is a bit more expensive...

I've been with pair.com for 3 years now, never a single problem. Excellent, responsive customer service both in technical and accounts. Was with them while they moved their entire data center, and only have 30 minutes of scheduled (and very well advertised in advance) downtime.

All their hosting is FreeBSD - their current reference system is 4.6.

They're a bit more conservative than other services - emphasizing reliability over having the latest bells, whistles, release, or other hot item. Moveable Type and Gallery were easy installations, didn't require a bunch of extra work on my part (ie, almost all the needed items were pre-installed). All your stuff - webfiles and email spools - draws from the same quota (unlike another service I was with that put a 15MB cap on your total IMAP mailboxes). IMAP, POP, and they even provide an SMTP relay that works on the road (POP/IMAP before send). Webmail (Squirrelmail) for all accounts. Great web config interface.

Pair Networks (pair.com). Rock solid. Not an instant of downtime, ever. Expensive compared to some of these options (they have a $5 a month option but it doesn't allow CGI; I pay $18 a month for a more full-featured plan) but they're so good it's worth it.

cheapest one I know of is 2mhost.com. It's 1.50 a month, uses cpanel 4 and has:
 50mb Disk Space
 10 PopMail accounts
 10 SubDomains (with FTP)
 3 Mailing lists
 Unlimited transfer
 Unlimited Mail AutoResponders
 Unlimited Mail Forwarders
 Catch all Mails

they have additional stuff ala carte.

One thing they didn't have, at least when I had a site hosted there, was good customer service. Finding someone who spoke english was difficult. But I never had any problems with anything static, and PHP was fine as well. The performance on the database was abysmal though. That may have changed now though, it's been a couple of years.

If you have more than one site, though, or if you and the other boingboing crew wanted all your stuff on one server, webaxxs.com is a great deal. I'm paying 70 a month (60 hosting plus 10 to let me manage my own DNS) for a VPS (virtual private server... basically they carve up a big server into small, independent servers which cannot affect one another and each has its own linux install, so you have root access) with 3 gigs of space and 20 gigs of bandwidth and the ensim control panel. And *excellent* 24/7 telephone technical support. For a little more you can get similar service at their parent company, OLM, but with raid and some extra stuff.

But for dirt cheap, you can't beat 2mhost, short of hosting it in your living room. A year of hosting is the price of a single pizza.

HostSector is pretty good. I've been using them for about a year now. Mostly linux-based Apache servers, though than can do Windoze as well. I think I pay about $8 a month for at least 50mb, plus 3 MySQL databases (very handy for movable type). Customer service is also generally quite good (I had issues with SSH early on, and they were quick to take care of problems).

They do have Control Panel access as well....
