152.3 Lunch Breaks
152.31 Routine Schedule
East Coast RC: From the PO 603. You may stop for not more than 30 minutes for lunch, during which time mail and equipment must be protected. You may split your lunch period into segments that may be taken in the office or on the route providing the normal schedule is maintained to the extent possible. Time spent consuming coffeeaway from your case in the office or on the route is considered part of the 30-minute authorized lunch period and must be recorded under lunch on Form 4240.

Does anyone know where I can find in writing that you can not deviate more than 1/4 mile from your route to take a lunch break. My PM says I can't go back to the office to eat because I am a mile away

Guess it depends on what kind of "officials" your talking about. we have catwalks above our cases in my office where postal inspectors can walk around without anyone knowing of their presence. So a carrier could be removed if they saw him or her stealing something out of the mail.
I've also seen a city carrier removed for removing and using gift cards. Is his case they received complaints, investigated and then planted a card to a vacant address on his route in the hot case. Sure enough it was cashed in.

I also used to work in a party store where a clerk would sell $5 worth of lotto on one ticket, wait for the customer to leave and then cancel the transaction... either pocketing the cash or using it to buy instant tickets in the process. She got nailed when a customer brought in a ticket that won but couldn't cash it in because it had been canceled. They ended up parking a lottery official outside the store with a laptop who monitored the lottery machine's transactions from there and knew instantly when she had canceled a ticket.

As far as the post office is concerned, it never ceases to amaze me when people throw away a $35,000-$60,000 a year job and career just to steal a $10 gift card.

What would a worker have to do to get escorted out by officials?

Need pictures of your hands. We are doing a video on postal workers hands on youtube. The dept of labor denies 50% of carpal tunnel claims. They could be taken against a dark background or in the positions of doing your job in stressful positions, cracked and bleeding, cold and scarred. We need them, letting the world see. Please send them to pfmorris58@hotmail.com

Cougress: If you are not a union member, you should think about joining. The contract essentially requires the primary sub on the route (assigned sub of record) be assigned to work in the regulars absence. Your office is required (contractually) to have a matrix which lists primary, second and third sub for each route. You could file (and surely win) a grievance if you were required to be assigned to work the route by contract and were not allowed to work the route. This assumes you were available to work the route (no documented performance issues, no potential for exceeding 40 hours in a week, etc). I encourage you to check the contract. Of course like "finally retired" said, you could just roll over, be glad you have a job, and let them screw you. I've never been one to run and hide so I recommend you discuss this issue with your supervisor in anticipation of the need to file a grievance.

I do not like to file greviances and only will if I have to, so far I have not. I am thankful for the hours, but I have another job and how am I supposed to know if I am scheduled if no one lets me know? Yes, I am very interested in what the legal outlines have to say about the subject.

it depends on if you want to stay employed. Be glad you have a job, and be thankful for the hours..

cougress; Are you interested in what the contract says or what usually happens unless you file a grievace?

I'm an RCA and I am assigned to a route. Does the post office I'm stationed at have the right to schedule me for a different route without asking me first?
