Virtuoso Universal Server. Shipped for Mac OS X since 10.0 -- currently at Virtuoso 3.2, for Mac OS X 10.2.6 or better. I run it on my somewhat upgraded PowerBook G3 Series Wallstreet (266 MHz, 512 MB, 30 GB).

VDBMS, RDBMS, XML-DBMS, client-and-server for SOAP, UDDI, HTTP, WebDAV, NNTP, SMTP, POP3, XML-RPC, Blogger, MetaWeblog, Moveable Type, and many more protocols and standards. Supports XPath, XQuery, XSLT, SQL-to-XML, XML-to-SQL....

It's where I host my Blog originals -- and it's the engine I use to upstream to several other sites. It's how I aggregate RSS feeds -- and how I generate my own RSS, RDF, ECHO, and other feeds.

Free to download with 30-day evaluation license. Web-based installation and up-and-running support is free. John Udell has played with the Windows and Linux flavors -- more folks need to experience the Mac OS X side of things.

I have agree that Hydra is addictive, but in many ways it demands it's own category, in my company we use it ALL the time. When in a conference call we all have it open for taking notes on the same sheet, it has changes the efficacy of the time spent and gives us a record that is so much greater.

great list rob
will make the effort to try openoffice again now, but have nothing bad to say about office for X it handles what i need cross platform and is just fine for stuff that bbedit wont do.

I also find X-Assist by Peter Li useful especially useful to switch apps , get directly to control panels, provide just the right os9 nostalgia and the price is right too :-)

Will, Good point, I should add Hydra in there. It is not in the same league as say BBEdit, but it can sure hold its own with its innovative features. In fact, I should create a new category for collaborative programs, since that is where Hydra really belongs at this point...

You missed probably the best text editor for the Mac Hydra.

Completely free, fast, simple, colourisation of code etc. Killer feature is that it supports Rendevouz so ideal for shared simultaneous text editing.
