I set everything up (I believe) correctly, but I keep getting this error:

I didn't set it all up correctly - I had mistyped the database name. Check, recheck and then check again!

The tables had not been created, so it was trying to evaluate a null. That won't work!

Thanks for the awesome application Dean. v.2 is very cool!

Fortunately, I'm not getting this any more.

Thanks, Donna. You're bomb-donna-diggity yourself.

What to expect in 2.01, apart from stability and speed improvements, can be seen here:

Dean, I'd just like to echo the earlier message that asserted you were the bomb-diggity. For some unknown reason, I've held off on installing Refer, and it is absolutely swell. Plus, with your instructions and the comments here, troubleshooting was a breeze - no trouble at all. Thanks!

I was creating entirely new databases for the Refer table. I went ahead and created the table. I went to refer/index.php and got some kind of message regarding line 5 of index.php. I uncommented line 3 of index.php and did a quick test. It's all good. Thanks Dean.

Ahh! eveything has gone haywire. Yes Dean, I did create a shiny new db...but now I am getting a different error from setupbd.php:

Parse error: parse error in /home/.kader/icthyo/jasonsantamaria.com/refer/refer.php on line 179

Fatal error: Call to undefined function: postset() in /home/.kader/icthyo/jasonsantamaria.com/refer/setupdb.php on line 3

This is what I have set:
 $host = 'localhost'; // MySQL server, frequently "localhost"
 $db = 'refersdb'; // database name
 $table = 'refer'; // any name you like - installer will create the table

I know my pass and username are good...it seems like it is having trouble with my server name. "localhost" doesn't work....I set up a MySQL Hostname on my server which is "refer.mywebsite.com" which doesn't work...my db is located on my host's server "scruple" and that doesn't work.

What am I doing wrong here? Throw a brick at my head.

The

Fatal error: Cannot redeclare refer_list()

message shouldn't be happening unless BOTH

- an .htaccess file is being used to auto-prepend refer.php

AND

The # has been deleted on line 3 of /refer/index.php

Can those who've been getting this error confirm this isn't the case?

Dondi, Jason -
Am I correct in assuming you've created entirely new databases for the Refer table?

If so, then go ahead and create the table - that error message effectively means nothing, other than that it couldn't list any tables in the db (which would be true if no others had been created yet)

Um.. I'm having a little trouble installing this. I followed the instructions.. but for some reason, this keeps on showing up:

I'm having a little trouble with setupdb.php for Refer 2.0. I get:

Warning: Wrong datatype for second argument in call to in_array in /home/dondi/public_html/refer2/setupdb.php on line 74

Database connection OK.

Create refer table?

This may have something to do with my 'db' and 'usr' are both 'dondi_refer'. Should I go ahead and create refer table anyway? Should I wait for 2.0.1?

I think Refer 2.0 is gonna be great once I get this little problem sorted out. Any tips are appreciated.

Thanks Dean for this tool.

I really couldn't find any referrer-tracker as good as refer, thank you for this.

One suggestion: my site gets a lot of hits from google. Wouldn't it be nice to have two seperate tables, one with the regular referrers and one with a list of google-searchwords instead of the Google-URI?

06-15-2003 03:40 PM ET (US)
OKay, that worked, thanks.

Warning: in_array() [function.in-array]: Wrong datatype for second argument in /home/extasy/public_html/Refer/setupdb.php on line 74

amber: when you set up a db username and db, it's something_nameofdb

like mine undulant_refer for both db username, and db. might be causing your problem. so login to your cpanel, and copy/paste your dbname and username.

 $table = 'refer'; // any name you like - installer will create the table

// Fill these in to halt the recording of unwanted referrals
// (i.e., an overly frequent google search, or a robot that

Dean, Refer is the bomb-diggity. It worked beautifully until I upgraded from 1.1 to 2.0, whereupon it broke. This is bad because I checked my referrers every day and was addicted to it (it's better than reality TV).

I think the problem is related to the PHP version, which problem you said you were fixing for 2.01. So my only point is that I eagerly await the release of the new version. :)

Hello, I just installed Refer2.0 and I'm having some difficulties. First, the setup ran fine and create the refer table. I copied and pasted the code into my .htacess. But when I view refer/index.php, it doesn't log anything. But when I changed the $mydomain in the refer.php to my other domain (five30.com), it actually works and logs the referers fine. How come one works (five30.com) and the other doesn't (crishchun.com)? My refer directory is at http://crishchun.com/blog/refer/index.php. Also, is there a way I can block my IP so it doesn't record my hits whenever I refresh and update my site? Thanks for your help!

Hi, I get the same kind of message like Nick Feder above:

Fatal error: Cannot redeclare refer_list() (previously declared in /home/www/ferociouscheese/refer/refer.php:93) in /home/www/ferociouscheese/refer/refer.php on line 91

How can I get rid of this or, is this normal?

That's exactly it, Dean. It's to force a .html file to SSI a .pl script.

Is the .htaccess in the subdirectory to enforce server-side includes or something?

Thanks, there is a simple fix, which will be in the forthcoming version, if you want to keep the <p> tags:

    echo '<item>',
     tag($when.' - '.substr($refer,0,25),'title'),
     tag('http://'.$refer,'link'),
     tag(
      htmlspecialchars(tag(tag('Where: ','em').$page,'p').
      tag(tag('From: ','em').$refer,'p').
      tag(tag('Who: ','em').$host,'p'))
     ,'description'),'</item>';

Hi Dean,

I'm really enjoying Refer! I'm using it on the quiet to track referrals to selected entries on my blog, which is a lot more fun than wading through the logs. Oy. What a lifesaver.

Anyway: I'd had some trouble reading the RSS feed of my install of refer in NetNewsWire - I think it's around line 172 of refer.php, where you're using tag('$stuff', p) to put p tags in the content. Both NNW and the feed validator at feeds.archive.org didn't like those p tags; NNW just displayed "pppp" as the description.

In the meantime, I edited mine to remove all the p's -
else if ($format=="rss"){
 $refer = htmlspecialchars($refer);

        echo '<item>',
        tag($when.' - '.substr($refer,0,25),'title'),
        tag('http://'.$refer,'link'),
        '<description>Referral to ' .$page.
        ' by ' .$refer.
        ' -- Visitor is from ' .$host. '.</description></item>';
   }

It made NNW happy and the validator, but is there a better way to do this?

Hi, Dean. First, thanks for the great app.

All is working well except for a sub-directory wherein I have an existing .htaccess that adds "AddHandler server-parsed .html". Having modified my top-level .htaccess as directed by setupdb.php, the index.html in said sub-directory is now being forced to download rather than display.

Given that I'm no kind of .htaccess/Apache wiz, I'm not clear what's causing the conflict. Any ideas?

Thanks again.

Thanks, silly glitch.

Fixed in the forthcoming version or if you like you can delete the following three lines, starting at 148 in refer.php:

$pageprint = ($pageprint!='')
    ? '<a href="'.$page.'" target="_blank">'.$pageprint.'</a>'
    : '';

John -

Looks like versions of PHP as early as 4.1.x were really unforgiving about running regular expressions on data - I should have accounted for that.

I'll add a more thorough escaping mechanism in Refer 2.01, which should make those errors disappear.

Sometimes (but not always) I see these errors on my index.php page and the other pages of my site that include refer.php.

My host seems to run PHP 4.1.2 on some servers, and 4.3.1 on others. Is 4.1.2 not new enough for Refer 2.0?

Hey Dean,

Great application!

I've only got one problem: the pages it creates do not validate.

The problem occurs in the "where" column of the table where an opening <a href="reffered link"> tag is created twice. Other than that, it works splendidly.

If I knew anything about php, I'd give you so more helpfull feedback.

Keep up the good work, it's appreciated.

Hello Dean. Thanks for the tool.

One suggestion - in index.php, you could avoid the (not elsewhere documented?) need to uncomment "include refer.php" when not using .htaccess by using include_once, I believe.

Also - on that same line in index.php, I don't think "#" is a valid comment character for php. If it is it may be deprecated.

Thanks again.

Did you set up an .htaccess file as indicated during the installation?

As you've been kind enough to share your site path with us, it would look like this:

DirectoryIndex index.html index.htm index.php
AddType application/x-httpd-php .html .htm
php_value auto_prepend_file /home/.dacron/peroty/arcticpalace.org/refer/refer.php

If you don't want to do use an .htaccess file, you can open /refer/index.php and delete the # at the beginning of the third line from the top. Then, on all pages or templates you wish to have Refer monitor, you would put the following snippet:

<?php
include '/home/.dacron/peroty/arcticpalace.org/refer/refer.php';
?>

I just downloaded Refer 2.0. It looks very nifty, however, I cannot get it working.

The address where I've uploaded it is: http://www.arcticpalace.org/refer/

And the message I get is this: Fatal error: Call to undefined function: getset() in /home/.dacron/peroty/arcticpalace.org/refer/index.php on line 5

Any thoughts?
