i agree with the previous post. my dad is a union negotiator, and what the supermarkets are doing is cold, calculated, and mean. i went with my mom to buy all our groceries at trader joe's, which is non-union.
a.k.a DreamRevolver  166
10-20-2003 04:45 AM ET (US)
Don't hate me for not discussing a fotolog matter here. But I think this is pretty important. If you buy your groceries at a Safeway, Kroger, Ralph's, Vons, or Pavillions, please consider an alternate source for your groceries. If you have a job that give decent wage and healthcare, imagine yourself without it. If you ever aspire to have those things, consider that someday soon, it might be nearly impossible to attain. Unions matter, corperations a.k.a. "The Man" do not care if you or your children are sick. You can rot in hell and the C.E.O. wont give a flying F***, he wouldn't waste the energy to do so, assuming he (or she) noticed. Money makes the world go 'round, and that's what they want. Right now, these grocery chains are trying to take away the benefits of current and future employees, because it's easier than making up for their sales losses to competition in a responsible way. If you think the way that this situation is being handled by the union workers is unfair, consider that the head of Safeway is taking a hardline on the issue, preferring to starve out his employees, rather than even consider a negotiation. Please don't cross the picket line, because with every purchase at any one of these chains you are effectively saying that a person, and their family matter less to you than a gallon of milk. It's worth it to support the union, because when one union wins, that victory will strengthen all unions, by showing that the people support them, and showing their opposition that they are stong, and that all the money & power doesn't afford them the right to throw workers and their families by the wayside for an extra buck.

Hi ALL! I am shamelessly promoting for the other half of hoyumpavision. He's left the East Coast and is now out in your neck of the woods with the punk band Stupid. (he's the drummer) You can see the Stupid website at http://www.stupidband.com . There's tunes on the site if you wanna check it out.

They have 2 gigs in LA this week. I was kinda hoping that there's a f'logger in the area and that they were totally down for hearing some Stupid punk. PLUS, you'd get to meet Ben from /hoyumpavision, /toughguyoliver and /stupid! Say HI for me!!! And take some pictures!!!

I've been to the LA Zoo twice in the past six months.

There's a lot of interesting photography challenges there. One great example is their nocturnal house which has echidnas (a monotreme... an egg-laying mammal) and koalas.

They've also got Komodo Dragons. Dual challenge, there. First, the nasty things are behind glass and secondly, they're about as slothful as well a um sloth.

And don't forget right across the street from the LA Zoo is a museum. I haven't been inside of it yet, but I'm told its worth while every now and again.

Well, Fotolog is still in this transition period. It will take time for everything to balance out.

Glitches are being worked out. Crackdowns on cheating are occuring. Eventually everything should get to the point we all hope for.

I spent a marvelous afternoon at the UC Botanical Gardens today with a friend new to digital who works on campus. I spirited her away for her lunch hour and got her excited about taking pix up there then took her back to work and went back myself to spend some time leisurely taking as many pictures as I could fit on all of my compact flash cards. :) That place is amazing and, although it's late in the summer, there thousands of plants to look at and take pictures of. As I've mentioned in here before, it's free on Thursdays.

Dear TeraGram,
I don't know why I'm having such a difficult time trying to explain my problem. My fotolog link appears on the right side of the screen on the coolcars friends/favorites because I elected to put it there myself by clicking on a link which allowed me to put it there. The same type of link appeared on other community fotologs. Now I cannot find where this link disappeared to. This has nothing to do with adding others to my own fotolog's friends/favorites.
TeraGramPerson was signed in when posted  138

I don't recall ever seeing such a link, but I sometimes play on Fotolog with one eye on the screen and another on my daughter.

I think the link that you're mis-remembering is "Add {groupname} to Friends/Favorites" which adds the group to your own list, not you to their list. That link now sits in the center, beneath the title banner of every group log.

I've emailed Cypher and asked him to address this just in case you did see such a thing and my brain is finally and completely cracking from lack of sleep and toddler-antic-induced paranoia & worry.

Cypher, as you may be aware, is in NYC, though and well we all know what's going on out there right now so he may not be able to give you/us an answer anytime real soon.

Dear TeraGram & lotusgreen,
In addition to the "upload your photo to this group" there was another link to click which said "ADD YOUR FOTOLOG TO THIS GROUP'S FRIENDS/FAVORITES". I clicked on it and the current photo on my own fotolog appeared on the right-hand side of the screen under where it says "COOLCAR'S FAVORITE'S/FRIENDS".

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHH!!

You mean the "upload a photo to this group" link!!!

You must be logged out.

Go to www.fotolog.net and log in under your own account name. If you are logged in, log out and log in again.

Then go to the group logs and I bet that link is there again.

Dear TeraGram,
That's very interesting. The reason I am on the coolcars site is because I added it myself. There was a link on all of the community sites that allowed users to add their own links. I simply clicked on it and presto!- my link appeared. Since the very next day afterwards I haven't been able to find where that clickable link disappeared to. What happened?

Mr. Goleta:

I didn't put it there. The Group Manager of Murals put it there. I've contributed several pictures and the owner (whoever it is... can't remember... preschooler running amok... aiieeee) put me in the F/F list.

If you want a sure-fire way into a F/F list, contribute to one of the following groups:

spyshots
fotocats
your_city

I manage all of them and try to maintain the F/F lists as best I can. Spyshots and Your_City are a little behind right now but will be caught up by the end of the day. You've already contributed to CoolCars and you are on the F/F list for it, but feel free to contribute more!

I do think that the popular Group Logs are a great way to increase your exposure and garner interest among other users to your own log. Just make sure you upload quality photos that fit the context of the group log as much as possible.

I believe the administration is working on a way that you might be able to add yourself in the future....

No where have I seen Cypher even hint at that.

It has, however, been suggested several times by users.

It is an idea which I am fervently against.

Mr.Goleta, "signs" is a "private log" and just like you that person adds people at their whim or leisure. Did you mean "signmaker", perhaps?

"Neon", however, is a group f'log.

Have you contributed to that f'log? If so, in my view you should be added to the F/F. If you've contributed more than once and aren't on the F/F maybe the group manager is just busy or overlooked you, or has a more laid-back approach to managing the group than I have. Check the "about" of the group f'log for the admin's email addy and shoot them a polite message.

I would not, however, ask for it publically.

How do I put my link on the friends/favorites on the right side of the screen on a community site such as fotolog/signs or fotolog/neon, etc?

Lol... I'll have to look it up to actually tell you where it is - I just know how to get there. :) I come from Richmond so I usually take the wildcat canyon road across the back of the hills through Tilden. I'll look it up - I have a brochure from them and there is an address on that I think. :)

I'm in as long as it's a day and time I can show up. :)

Just curious, why do you want more than 3 people, LotusGreen? I'm thinking we can take pictures that day as well as talk - too many people and that gets difficult. Or, were you just thinking of meeting and talking?

BTW, the place in Tilden I was referring to is really cool and hidden out of the way and quiet with lots of places for 3 or 4 people to sit and talk. But there is no way I'd want to go there and not take pix as well. :)

I'm in Richmond and thought about going to the San Rafael meetup but would prefer something where I don't have to cross a bridge to get there. :) I do a lot of photography in Tilden at the native plants botanical garden there and also at UCB Botanical Gardens and have done lots over the years at and around the Berkeley Marina (grew up in Berkeley and worked on the UCB campus for years). So, I'd be up for Tilden especially - easy to get to from where I live and more parking opportunities than most places in Berkeley. Another great places to take pix in Berkeley is the Rose Garden (not just for the flowers, the views of the Bay from there are phenomenal).

Under normal circumstances, I would be there in an instant--either SF or Berkeley (80 miles from here, but no biggie). Unfortunately, I'm still recovering from my dislocated shoulder and can't drive yet. And about the time I should be able to drive, I'm going to Australia (talk about your photo ops!). However, I will be delighted to meet people in the Bay Area sometime after the end of October.

I had a funny idea....there are some free museum happenings in SF - basically, some nice corporation allows folks to free admission, one night in the month - i thought it might be a cool idea to do some fotologging at these places:

SF Exploratorium - free admission on the First Wed of every Month

Asian Art Museum - free admission on the First Tuesday of the month or after 5pm (5$ admission)

what do you think?

Hey Gang!

It is TIME TO VOTE for your Meetup Place!

Please peruse the list of cities in CA carefully and see which cities have at least five people. Try to vote in those venues. If you can't because you're too far out (sniff, like me) see if you can beat the bushes to scare up some others in your immediate vicinity.

Be polite on others' Fotolog pages if you decide to leave messages to them.

Let's see how this goes for the next week and we'll double check the numbers and see if we need to shake the trees a bit harder.

hey folks!

it's my first time posting :)

i actually work at uc berkeley and i think it's a great midway point for folks to meet-up at. I would recomend the Albatross Pub because:
  • it's close to the 80 freeway
  • it has a great selection of drinks
  • plenty of games to keep ya occupied....which is cool, when you're meeting new people: trivia pursuit, boggle, weekly brain teasers, more board games, pool, and darts

It's certainly reasonable to combine SF-Oakland-San Jose-San Rafael-San Mateo for large NYC-style group meetup purposes. 2 of our Sacramentans (eel_03 and polaroid_billy) have managed to drive the 90 miles from here to SF for the last 2 meetups there, and I would surmise they felt the drive was worth it. I'm not saying everyone in the Sacto. area should forego having our own meetup -- I think we're turning into our own sizable community, it's just that not all here are signed up on Fotolog Meetup yet.

And a welcome invasion it is!

It occured to me last night, as I was putting together the previous list of CA Fotolog Meetup Cities that one problem we face here in CA is that while our state is very large, it seems to be fragmented into too many regions.

Now, before I go on to my proposal, let me all remind you (or inform you in case you didn't know) that I'm a CA transplant. I hail from Chicago originally. While I have lived in CA for more than a decade now, some of the CA cities' locations are fuzzy in my head. And, I don't have access to a map at this very moment.

Anyway, let's look at the list. It seems to me that if we were to attempt to focus on Central Locations instead of individual cities the chances of meetups increase.

Perhaps the Bay Cities aren't the best example to look at because SF already has a great number of voting members in Meetup.com, but I shall proceed anyway.

San Francisco, CA (48) +3
San Jose, CA (13) +1
Oakland-Alameda, CA (7) +2
San Mateo County, CA (6) +1

Aren't all these places (are there more on the list in message #78 that I'm overlooking?) within a comfortable drive's distance?

Could we convince folks who have previously voted for other locations to go to SF instead?

What other cities could be combined into a region? Which city would best be considered central to that region?

Welcome, welcome, welcome!

If you just got here, please take a minute and preview the first 62 messages on the board. It won't take long. Most are "hi here I am" first-posts. (I'm NOT knocking those! They're very important.)

California is a huge state. Most people outside our borders don't understand how big it is. Alaskans and Texans probably relate, but East Coasters are generally lost.

When I had my daughter I was the grateful recipient of many gifts from friends I've met across the globe through the internet. A lot of those gifts were gift certificates. I can't tell you how many were for stores that were only in SF or SD! It worked out, though. We needed to visit family and friends in those cities anyway.

(I have no idea why I went off on that tangent other than to give an illustration as to other's perceptions of the state.)

This is one of the reasons I thought it necessary to create this board and to "spam" every Fotolog in the CA directory. The only way for us to gel is to know who we all are and where we all are.

The next Meetup is scheduled for 29 days from now. Voting begins July 23.

What I propose is that everyone look at the Fotolog California directory. There's over 60 pages so it will take some time to go through it. Note (bookmark?) those Fotologs in your area. On or about July 23, leave a gentle message on those Fotologs: "We're having a meetup. See this link. Join us!" or something to that effect.

When I left my initial messages (over 1,000!!) on the Fotologs announing this board, I fully expected at least a handful of complaints. I got one. Not a bad ratio. I think that speaks to Californian's tolerance. Let's not abuse that, but at the same time let's not be lax. I think some "activism" is necessary to get the ball rolling.

Well my daughter's about ready to get out of her high-chair so I must bid farewell.

I love Fotolog, and I think it would be fanatstic to meet up with other people who make up the local part of that community -- I voted and RSVP'd on last months Santa Rosa Meetup and was all geared up to go. Alas it was cancelled to due lack of interest. Let's meet at some great location in SOnoma COunty (the possibilities are endless) have a picnic or something and shoot it up! --Indigau of P r e t t y W i s e Landscape Services

BevSykes, you are DEFinitely not the only oldster shaking a fotoleg out here. I am at/approaching retirement age; have pretty much decided being a crusty old fart with lotsa wiseass young fotosnappers is better than the alternatives. Besides, some of those young wiseasses may be curious about what happens to a wiseass when he/she gets older. I hope to be one of the more acceptable answers.

I just wanted to drop in and say hi and good luck. I started the Seattle discussion board, which hasn't been very active, but we managed to get together a small meetup by piggybacking on an existing non-Fotolog photo bloggers' meetup. - http://www.fotolog.net/seattle

> Once we've joined...what's the next step?

Once you've joined, find the Fotolog Meetup Page.

fotolog.meetup.com

Voting for a location within a city starts two weeks before the Meetup is to occur.

When you can, vote. Encourage others in your area to make the time to vote & attend.

Then we can paste pictures of wild & crazy Californians enjoying a meetup and make those East Coasters jealous. (g)

I've looked there a bit...didn't make much sense of it (that ol' "not intuitive" bit, I guess!) Once we've joined...what's the next step? (It's a pain because Opera, which is my browser, doesn't like Meetup, so I have to log in with IE).

Bev, Lotus, et al,

Here we come to the crux of the matter, eh? It is time to band together and ensure that CA meetups occur with proper numbers, diversity and well... general California craziness that we make those East Coasters green with envy.

Yes, that is my nefarious plan.

Someone asked "how do these meetups happen?"

Well, you may notice on the front page of Fotolog, down at the bottom a red & white logo.

Sign up! Push that link and poke around a bit.

Their interface isn't as intuitive as I'd like. But it is better than nothing.

I'm local to the LA area and I know of another local Fotologger that would like to participate in a meet up. One idea, about getting the word out, would be adding a line to your comment section asking people to join in.

Thanks for the invite, Maggie. I don't know that I'd be available for meets in Sacto (I live 45 miles up I-80), but I am interested to see what others find to shoot in the general area. I've been shooting mostly structures and a few people in the downtown, and almost made my way into the underground when I took my latest shot of the demolition site/graffiti. http://www.fotolog.net/straightnochaser

I've just finished spamm... err um informing everyone in the F'Log CA directory. That was a much bigger chore than I imagined it would be. Still, things worth doing are worth doing well and all those other platitudes.

If anyone is upset about those messages I put up (Announcing the California Fotologgers Board! Please stop by and spread the word.) please just delete them.

Now, as to what we can talk about here... well whatever comes up, I suppose.

My main intent is to bring CA F'loggers a little closer.

Month after month I see those Meetup Pictures from the East Coast and I'm starting to get real jealous. I know the Bay Area crew gets together, but I've yet to see any activity from LA, Ventura, Santa Barbara or other CA cities.

So, how 'bout it? Think we can generate enough interest to spark some other Meetups here in CA?

How do we go about doing it?

Thanks for the invite Teragram. I'm in Saratoga, near San Jose. Originally from Pasadena, though, and will soon be visiting my sis down south (near San Diego) and making our obligatory pilgrimages to the low weirdness of Muscle Beach and the high weirdness of new Getty. I still mourn the closing of Gorky's!

Waving a hand from Davis. Would love to do something with other loggers in the area. At the moment, I am not mobile, since my arm is still recovering from my fall, and then I'll be heading off to Australia at the end of August, but when I come back, I'd definitely be interested in a face-to-face. In the meantime, I look forward to meeting others via the board.

Welcome to the California Fotologgers QuickTopic Board! The purpose of this board is to foster closer ties to other California Fotologgers. Ideally it will help more California Meetups occur.

This forum is open to anyone who wishes to participate.

Please be warned: I will use a heavy hand deleting messages which are overtly vulgar (that does not mean that certain words are banned) or are unwarranted personal attacks.

What is a "warranted personal attack"? Well, for right now it means that you can say almost anything you like about that Randall Simon.

Enjoy and please tell other California Fotologgers that this board exists.
