When enough people buy into the phonecam culture, we will all finally be under constant surveillance.

Huh??? Is there a 'Bad Guy rulebook' somewhere that says you need a photo of someone before you can threaten them?

What about those guys always drawing pictures in courtrooms? How come they never get caught? Do they draw them from memory?

Here in the states at least, cameras are generally forbidden in court, so I figure it's only a matter of time before cellcams are too.

Was in the gym the other night and they have signs posted about how videocams and cameras are prohibited in the locker rooms. I wonder how long until they think of cellcams as well.

I live in New Jersey, and I was just in court recently for a traffic violation. There were strict rules about cel phones in court. If they saw it, they were to confiscate it, find you in contempt of court, and allow you to file all the appropriate paperwork to get your propety back. Easier to turn it off and put it away.

This is pretty futile to try to stop. Sure, it's in a phone for now, but what about when they build it into your glasses? Cameras, voice and video recorders, always-on internet broadcasting, hell "life blogs" - how are you going to stop that?

The music industry isn't the only thing that's gonna have to change due to technology. I'm not saying I'm in favor of living my life on TV, I just don't see any way around it.

I don't see why they outlaw unintrusive cameras in courtrooms. Flashes and beeps shouldn't be allowed, because they can be disturbing, but if they let people in, cameras should be allowed in as well.

In my jurisdiction (New Jersey), all cameras, telephones or radios, and electronic or analogue recording devices are already banned from courtrooms unless expressly permitted by the Court. The court does it for the following reasons: (1) they interfere with the stenographers' equipment (very true in the case of the 2-way radios used by messengers), (2) it may violate gag orders or the rules that pertain to cases involving families, children, crime, or trade secrets, and (3) it is within a judge's discretion to set the required level of decorum expected before a court (i.e., some judges require all attorneys to wear suits, most require all present to remove their hats, and all require no noise or distractions [and here the issue of pda's without silent alarms, cameras, phones, and radios are addressed] during a proceeding). It's not a matter of controlling communication. It's a matter of maintaining a level of respect for the Court.

LA County's impounding camera phones already. No official notices up yet, but the courthouse guards noticed my attachment when it went through the metal detector.

One thing that struck me about this:
More and more phones are coming with cameras not as an attachment, but as a built-in component, just like the memo-recording capability of many phones. And videophones capable of low-quality streaming video are on the verge of moving from satellites to local networks and becoming accessible to consumers, not just embedded reporters.

Which means you're going to have a lot more people who are going to be forced to relinquish their phones in various places, even as more people become accustomed to always having the same communication power as a TV station and newspaper, although a insignificant percent of the audience, in a mobile fashion.

The coming world of Lil Brothers demands some sort of PJD (Personal Jamming Device) I can wear as a watch band.

Australian YMCA has also moved, "pro-actively" to request a ban on camera-phones in changing areas. But mini-cameras, and those that use them have been around for years, I've been in changing areas with my digital camera and I wouldn't *dream* of taking pictures of people there.

This is social "problem" which as usual will have neither a regulatory nor technological fix.

The rules will only be obeyed by those who don't need them.

Some people here sound like spoilt brats crying because their toys have to be put back in the box for a while.

ALL mobiles should be banned from court. Anyone caught handling their phone in court should have it confiscated for the duration of their time. Anyone receiving a phone call in court should have it confiscated. Anyone caught MAKING a call in court should be charged with contempt and given a hefty fine.

You are NOT there to play with your fucking toys. So just stop whining about it.

Damn dop, who pissed in your cheerios?
More seriously, why? What's so wrong about having a cellphone in court? A loud discussion is rude, yes, but phones are becoming useful for many other reasons. And I don't think the baliffs would like you having a loud discussion with your benchmates either.
See a few too many movies with people who wouldn't shut up or something?
