Thank goodness Google offers language translation, imperfect though it may be. A question we have been asked over the years is why we don't show artist and title information on a scroll. The reason is simple. All of Jerry's (and the occasional shows by others) are recorded directly from cd's or lp's. We play back all of our individual programs in total and not as a collection of individual mp3's. I have 800 hours of Jerry's programs that are rotated randomly. To convert each song to individual mp3's in order to provide a title scroll would be a massive undertaking.

When Charlie Parker died the phrase "Bird Lives" appeared as graffiti all over the world. In my world "Jerry Lives" 24 hours a day. I would have his programs playing constantly in my home even if The Spirit were to come to an end. Our listening audience is growing. Thanks for telling your friends and offering your comments. Stan

soy nuevo fan de KJAZ y no me sorprende conocer su noble historia. Parker, nice to see a new reference to "The Spirit". I've been "away" for awhile and so appreciate Jerry still being there when I come back. I even learn new things from the stuff I've heard many times before. I always thank him out loud when he says goodbye for the hour. It's the best!

Linda

PS Many thanks to "administrator" for removing all the extraneous messages.

Jeez, jazz people are nice. Just read through all messages and got caught up on the KJAZ, Jerry Dean and Stan Dunn stories. Me, I'm in Montana and new to KJAZ. When I was a kid in St. Paul, I listened to Leigh Kamman's WLOL and KSTP jazz broadcasts on a bakelite earphone under my pillow. I understand the comfort that comes when an old and familiar voice takes our kind of music seriously. The spirit is right. Keep it coming.

KJAZ & Jerry Dean listener for many years. When KJAZ left the air, I had no idea about
the Spirit of KJAZ.... just happened on it in the iTunes listings for Radio->Jazz- Spirit of KJAZ.

Then when Jerry couldn't keep up with the demands and passed away soon thereafter, I
thought : "How sad, in so many ways.... "

But it's been a pleasure to "rejoin" the listeners via the revived Spirit of KJAZ SF.

I've joined this list to be among those who might receive messages about supporting the
continuation of the broadcasts.

Let's not let the Spirit be lost.

Hello Stan/Chris,
It is so great that KJAZ is still happening. The time some of us put into sharing our love to this great music is so important. Jazz seems to get shoved to the bottom of the barrel and sometimes forgotten. People like Jerry, Stan, Bob, and all of the people that refused to let KJAZ pass into the nothingness, I applaud and honor you. Thank you for your service and I know that all the musicians that play this music feel the same, for without people like you our work would go unnoticed.
Best regards,
David Leshare Watson, Jazz vocalist
P.S.
I have a new CD "Big Town" with Mickey Roker, Bob Cranshaw and Michael LeDonne, it can be viewed at www.musicinthevines.com.

Thanks Linda! I can remember listening to Kjaz in the 1980s when Stann Dunn had the 6to 9am time slot . Having my clock radio alarm set to KJAZ and Stan's humor and jazz programing was a little bit of Heaven for quite a few years. When it left the air in the 90s it was quite a shock to my system. That is why it is so wonderful to have it back now!

Thank you, Stan!!!! for responding, for elucidating so many pieces of "the mystery", for keeping the music alive, and especially, for founding The Spirit in the first place!!!
I (and I'm sure, all of us) look forward to your evolution of this fantastic stream, and thank-you to Chris for his involvement, too. As for ensuring the legacy's survival into the future -- please stay in touch through this site, Jerry's Guestbook, and the Yahoo address. So many supporters out there!
Bravo, Encore!

To all of you who have been discussing Jerry Dean and the KJAZ Spirit, I thank you. I'm Stan Dunn and I launched "The Spirit" back when I was working for Radio@AOL(Spinner.com). Jerry and Tim joined me once I got it running. Jerry took it all on himself a few years back and filled it with 800 hours of the best programming on the planet. I am still running Jerry's shows and they will always be the mainstay of the stream. I have added some new shows of my own and will add more as time goes by. I wil be operating the stream as a nonprofit endeavor and we will have a webpage to keep you updated. Chris Dunn, by the way, is my son. Chris worked at KJAZ for quite a while during it's last years. He is now a successful jazz recordingg producer for Concord Records and he will be helping his "old man" out with "The Spirit". As soon as all the "paperwork" is in place we'll be asking for support from listeners and underwriters. But most importantly, we'll be doing what Jerry Dean, Pat Henry and all the other KJAZ folks did, playing the best jazz music and continuing the legacy of the greatest Jazz Radio Station ever, KJAZ. Let's all stay in touch. I miss my buddy, Jerry Dean as much as you all do. Stan Dunn

David Jackson from the Bay Area Radio Museum advises the following in the Gene Schram (Jerry Dean)Guestbook on November 8, 2007. "A quick note for everyone: the formal announcement won't be made for a few days, but Jerry Dean has officially been elected into the Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame, and will be honored during our ceremony at the Doubletree Inn at the Berkeley Marina on December 12. I can't tell you how many CD's I have bought after being introduced to various jazz artist on Jerry's show. Jerry is irreplacable. Ever since I discovered KJAZ streaming on Winamp, I've enjoyed countless hours of Jerry Dean's amazing voice and talent. Having listened to jazz stations all my life as I've traveled across the U.S., Jerry was the best in my book.

This is truely sad. I've only known Jerry for two years and only as a voice, as his Spirit of KJAZ streamed through my computer daily as I worked in the office or dozed off to sleep in my living room chair. Living in the midwest, I never heard KJAZ when it was on air radio and only recently became aware of Jerry's program on KJZY. In listening to and collecting jazz over the past 20 to 30 years, I never heard a voice who communicate about the genre so fluidly within the music he spoke to--in essence Jerry was a part of every tune he played. My collectable memory--Count Basie Orchestra's version of "I Left My Heart....." theme for The Spirit of KJAZ San Francisco; though he probably will always be a part of every jazz track I hear. To the Schram family, utmost condolences. Jerry was truely special. Dave Sylvania Township, Ohio

Carole: I messed up. Bob Parlocha is not on KPLU. He is on jazz stations across the country. I've been been mainly listening to KCSM in San Mateo, California now. Being from the East, he comes on at 5AM (2AM in California). On the other hand, he streams live from the WMUK website from 10PM to 5AM in the East, meaning that if you are in California or the West you catch him as early as 7PM. I don't know of any Eastern Time website where Parlocha may stream earlier. Google Bob Parlocha and from his website you can look at a listing of stations across the country he is on.

I'm a long time fan of the stream - spirit of KJAZ -- and like the others am sad for its loss. If there is a fundraising drive to get it back on the air, put me down for $75; it's invaluable, and should be preserved for the ages.

If enough others post messages here and pledge, maybe we can spark some interest. The universe is wired kind of funny these days.

Warm wishes to Jerry Dean and his fans.

Hello you all jazz lovers. I'm glad to find you there and so sad to read what happens to Mister Dean. I'm in Europe -10.000km from Frisco- and I used to listen to Jerry's voice and playlist almost every day. I discovered the horror when I was trying to show a friend the url on iTunes. I told him "you know, don't waste your time. The only one is THE SPIRIT." And I couldn't get connected. Until I understood. Let's pray for a second rebirth.

KJAZ: The version can be downloaded from any online music source. It is from the Count Basie Orchestra album "This Time By Basie". The full length version runs about two minutes with the "call sign riff" being at the end. Of course, Gregg's version will have Jerry saying "from San Francisco, this is THE SPIRIT". Ever so cool!!!

Does anyone know if the KJAZ call sign riff (I left my heart) is available for download anywhere? This radio station and its music played such an important part in my life, I can't believe it is gone again. I want some little memento, something to hang on to this time.

It is somehow comforting to find others that miss Jerry Dean. Loosing the spirit is almost as bad loosing Kjaz in the 90s. Although you can hear some of the n former KJAZ announcers on KCSM (Greg Bridges - Dick Conte - John Rogers - Jesse "Chuy" Varela etc.) the spirit was the best! I hope this gets resolved
Adam  45

Count me in on those who would be wiling to pitch in a contribution toward reviving KJAZ. I had fallen away from listening for a while and was mortified, when I tried to tune in again today, to discover what happened. Being in Canada (though a longtime Bay Area resident) it's especially frustrating to see this regressive US law having such a direct and terrible effect on internet broadcasting, and on listeners everywhere.

Glad to see the discussion is so recent - I'll keep watching it for news and developments...

I also want to add to the voices of those missing Jerry's stream and the Spirit of KJAZ.

There was something about Jerry's voice that was so absorbing and taxedo that was very unique.

Let me edit my last statement.

I agree 100% with your assessment of KCSM and KPLU. They are great feeds but Jerry had something about his stream made it a step above these!!
Globalmusicwiz  42
08-14-2007 02:24 AM ET (US)
The version of "I Left My Heart In San Francisco" you are refering to is by the Count Basie Orchestra and can be found on the CD "This Time". It is a late 1950s or early 1960s "date" (as Jerry would call them). The CD is still available on line or in music stores. Those four notes that Jerry uses are actually the last four in this 2 minute+ Basie arrangement. I too always found this most special and secured the music just before "The Spirit" left the air, not realizing the song would take on a different meaning, so soon.

Bob Parlocha has a regular overnight jazz program on many stations across the country including KCSM and KPLU. Bob's autobiography states that he grew up listening to Jerry Dean over the air on KJAZ. Bob has numerous links on the web.

As far as I know, a program called "Jerry Dean Jazz" can still be heard at KJZY (San Mateo, CA) from 6 to 10pm (PT) on Sunday. Also, on KEWU (Spokane, WA) from 3 to 6pm (PT) on Sunday. Like "The Spirit" these must be prerecorded. In private emails, I have found many can't receive KJZY--an otherwise "Smooth Jazz" station on line. KEWU a student run traditional jazz station out of Eastern Washington University. It can be recieved using a Quick Time player which can be downloaded from the KEWU website. If there are other stations, please advise. The above cited "San Francisco" theme is not part of this program.

I agree 100% with your assessment of KCSM and KPLU. They are great feeds but Jerry had something about his stream made it simply great!!

What I miss most, oddly enough, is the station ID - the first four notes of "I Left My Heart in San Francisco." And while I think KCSM and KPLU in Seattle have fine streams, they don't have that sound.

What's Bob Parlocha doing these days? I remember him from the Dinner Jazz on KJAZ. Or maybe, since KCSM has the KJAZ library, they can start using that ID!

I too wish Jerry Dean well and thank him very much for bringing back a lot of wonderful memories!

It may be more than just the royalty issue. Last week, in trying to gain more insight, I exchanged an email with Don Sanchez--Entertainment editor for ABC TV Channel 5 in the Bay area. Jerry apparently has also been in and out of the hospital with medical issues. Don Sanchez forwarded me an email from Alisa Clancy--operations manager and morning host at jazz public radio station KCSM in San Mateo, CA. While aware of the medical issues, Alisa was not aware that "The Spirit" had shut down.

For those not familiar with KCSM, this station received the KJAZ music collection when the on-air KJAZ went silent in 1994. Dick Conte--a former KJAZ announcer has a weekend show on KCSM.

I live in Ohio--far from the Bay area. I do have several other emails out to other possible contacts, but have otherwise heard nothing more. Someone with local contacts may be able to obtain more or confirm the information I have already provided. I too, miss the station but first and foremost wish Jerry well.

"I emailed Jerry Dean through his address at KJZY. He responded, confirming Randy's below fear. He can no longer finance the operation because of the royalty increase--despite the reprieve."

. . . is heartbreaking. I have left messages and emails too but have not gotten a response. I am not rich but will do whatever I can. I live in the Bay Area. I'll write letters, grant proposals. Jerry, please come back!

Count me in if we can get some kind of listener support going. This station is far too valuable to die. Will anyone with experience in fundraising volunteer to head this up?

I agree. I would gladly support this station the same way I support my own public radio station, KPLU. I grew up with KJAZ and would really love to have it back.

Can anyone find out how much it would take to support KJAZ each month? We can't let it die again.... Jerry Dean is truly a treasure.

Hello to all of you listeners to KJAZ. Think about it... What can we do to help Jerry Dean and get KJAZ back on the air. Maybe we need a fund drive supported by listeners, but how do we find out who they are?
Best wishes,
Jerry Duckett

Each time I enter the Winamp SHOUTcast-Jazz list I search vividly the link of KJAZ, but it has desapeared. Without KJAZ noting is the same. The Spirit has gone. I'm sad.

The loss of the fantastic KJAZ, the Spirit, with Jerry Dean, is a devastation. There isn't anything else out there like it. What can we do?

I fear that the Spirit of KJAZ might be gone for good. It disappeared on the very eve of the royalty increase deadline (despite the reprieve) and I have not heard it since. It's so hard to get any information to or from those guys. I hope they can figure out a way to get the stream back up - I miss it too!

How can I see the name of a song and album when it's played on a ITune Radio? Is it possible to add my favorite ITune Radio to some favorite list or bookmark in ITune?

Things seem to have gotten better with requests, if you email them at itunesradio@apple.com they will send you the guidelines needed to get your station listed. Good luck, hope that helps some people.

I've been buying tons of music through itunes taking the risk of not backing it up. I also put all of my CD's (spending hours doing this) inot Itunes. I recently bought an external hard drive and want to back up my music. I'd like to do it in such a way that I can transfer the hard drive to another computer and still have my music available to play from the hard drive. Is this possible? Any suggestions? Thanks

To:Jerry Dean, KJAZ<San Francisco.
please advise what happened to your station on SHOUTCAST. I am a long time listner, and even after you changed your URL back when, I continued to get you. Now all of a sudden you are not there. Even when I do a search I cannot get you. Please advise what happened and the step by step proceedure to get you back. I am not very computer literate , so treat me like a little boy.
Your music is superb, I am a freelance writer for newspapers , concentrating on jazz of ll types.I need you man.
Thanks,

I have been listening to the radio (love Midnight Blues.com!) on my office Mac. Sometimes I have i ton all day long. One of our IT guys recently accused me of streaming a 20mb file and it was causing other problems. The web server pointed to my Mac (I'm the only Mac user in the company!). I am not sure if that comes from just listening to iTunes Radio? I had no other files uploading or downloading and would really not have received or sent on that big anyway! Could someone explain how large the radio files are and how streaming works? I'd really like to jam it back to the IT person and be able to continue listening to the radio. THANKS!

When you listen to an internet radio station using WMP it shows the song info (artist, album, etc) for the playing song. Is there a similar option for iTunes? I’m interested in purchasing some of the songs I have heard but I don't have the info to do so.

My iTunes radio simply does not play at all. I just downloaded 6.0.4 onto my HP laptop. Is there some way I need to configure QuickTime to get iTunes radio stations to play?

I have been trying to find someone at itunes to add the new URL (205.188.215.228:8000 to the radio (Jazz) stream that was changed about 3 weeks ago. The old URL is still the address that is still on the Listing page. "The Spirit of KJAZ San Francisco" is a popular site for itunes users and I am getting many emails asking what happened to my stream. If someone out there can change the link to the new URL everyone would be very happy.

the new Safari browser is at issue, apple will hopefully get it solved soon. the radioio site doesnt actually have any windowmedia plugin code on it, so that Safari freaks even when it sees the link is a big issue, for apple.

It just sucks that it happens on our site too. Oh well.

Anywho, good news for quicktime users, radioio will most likely be rolling out all of our new channels with Quicktime6 AAC+ (not used by anyone else yet) in congunction with apple so... I hope to be able to tell yalls about it soon on our site. =)

As for selling out to the big guys, sorry wont find any of that at radioio. Fortunately we get to entertain the labels how we see fit, irreguardless of anything. We play what we want. Each PD (programming director) at radioio has 100% free roam and it shows that its all about the music.

Thanks for listening,
jesse

radio.toastdesign.com aka Toast Radio nice 14,000 songs from a guys personal collection. 6 person listening limit at one time. includes album art, song title and album title. all manner of music, nothing too loud if that's your genre.

Radio Paradise is also a great feed. Adult, smart, and eclectic. With iTunes you get the artist and title, even when using the G-Force visualizer (which rocks!). My kids love it too (2, 5 and 7 yrs old!).

I am really enjoying all of radioio's feeds. I like the acoustic feed too, but I have bookmarked their Ambient, Classical, Rock, and Eclectic feeds as well. They just had their second on-air pledge drive and I'm very tempted to support them.

I have corresponded with their webmaster about the obnoxious habit of asking for the windows media player. Only Safari notices this, Mozilla and IE don't do it. The webmaster was quite confused and didn't know about any plugin requirements. Maybe its just their ads doing it.

As a child of the 80's, I appreciate their 80's music feed. Many times, a 80's station includes heavy metal, top 40, and other stuff from the 80's. I realize the 80's had many different types of music, but I was brought up on strict alternative 80's (new wave, punk rock, etc.) and that is what radioio delivers.

The iTunes radio has been great for jazz fans, also, particularly those not near a large city. My favorite:
