By the way, the article you link to under "Report: Microsoft to cut OS X app pricing" includes the following sentence: "The company told dealers that the Professional Edition will ship with Version 6.1 of Virtual PC with Windows XP Professional. The new version will be priced at $499 with a $329 upgrade."
Hello? $499 is the list price on Office V.x as of this moment on amazon.com (though they're offering it for $439).
Sounds like MS is going to change the name of the current product to "Professional Edition", then pawn off a crippled version for $149 to students and teachers. That's what they call "shaking up the pricing"???
Here's to OOo, warts (and ugly fonts) and all.

John,
OK, you've got me on the spreadsheet issue. Most of the Excel spreadsheets I deal with are fairly straightforward. And you bring up a good point about the ugly look of OOo compared to the look and feel of what all of us are used to seeing under Mac OS X. But for the features offered and the ability to work with businesses that insist on Office compatibility, it is certainly a step in the right direction.
I will add up front, however, that is a real Mac OS X word processor app could work seamlessly with .doc files AND offer the proofing tools such as Track Changes then I would plunk down the money to use it over OOo at the drop of a hat. To this point, no one else can get these features into a Mac OS X word processor, which means the writers who work on projects like my current book project need to either pay for Word or try their hand at OOo.

Rob: Let me know if you want an Excel spreadsheet that will crash OOo -- I'll be happy to send you one!
I'll have to say though, I like the program despite its idiosyncracies. Even when it crashes, you can usually recover what you were doing.
Truth is though, it looks a whole lot better on the PC than on the Mac. Have you ever seen it on a Linux system? Are the fonts as ugly as they appear under X11?
