How do you video chat across the atlantic? I always get an error message. I just bought my macbook a month ago and have been using the video within the US but have had no luck when trying to connect across the atlantic ocean. Edited 01-17-2008 09:23 PM

i have a ibook g3 500mhz. Will any webcam work on this computer? Should i buy a unibrain firewire or use a usb cam with ichatusb and macam software? Any advice is greatly appreciated

Can anyone tell me how much greater the is quality of the NEC XT5000 to normal single chip DLPs. It is for sale on ebay and I would like any further information regarding this unit. It has 4500 lumens which sounds good, but I just dont know about the quality.

Can someone recommend a 'pro' or 'semi-pro' or 'prosumer' DV camcorder that fits the bill? I'm a longtime camcorder user, but always analogue like Straight-8, Hi8, Beta SP. I am a docs editor now needing a miniDV camera - setting my budget at about £800. I am all for DV in/out but my edit platform is a little Stone Age if still efficient ... running fast and wide SCSI drives via ATTO to a Mac G3 (Beige no less!) via a b'cast Pinnacle Targa card. This is all a bit like old stylee Avid MC - you can have a naff processor so long as you have the RAM - much of it down to the faster drive speeds (I do have a Firewire card installed and use Firewire drives as storage as opposed to edit drives). Oh, and in the case of FCP, keeping prog length to 30 mins. Which suits fine as I am making charity shorts. So what's crucial at this stage is that I can produce b'cast quality pics from a cam which the Targa can make use of. Equally important is analogue in/out since the Targa was designed to take Beta SP inputs and I’d also use the cam for xfers. Also a consideration is the quality of the 16x9 pic. My price cap suggests mostly second hand (unbattered) 3CCD cams - i.e. VX1000/2000. The Canon XM1 would be ideal except for no analogue in, a nice one went out on ebay the other day for £600. The Sony PD150 would be lovely but no steals at £800 available. Have also considered the Sony TRV900E, am excited about the Sony DSR PDX10P - perfect size, quality, features - but nothing used on the market as yet. As for new cameras, the single CCD JVC GRDV4000 comes to mind. So with one foot staunchly in the past, one eye looking ahead, and both hands on my pocketbook, any recommendations out there? Thanks a lot!

I bought an isight and have been using it very successfully with a 700 G3 ibook, video and audio are exceptional. I have no idea about other video options but, the isight works great with this G3. I have been using headphones and the mic in the ibook but even without headphones it seems fine. The audio and video quality are the best I have seen.

It would seem that iChat av auto-senses sound levels: If you blow on the microphone, it automatically adjusts the gain down to not overload the signal... the result being that you sound much quieter in a normal voice if iChat does not adjust the gain upwards after the spike in noise level. SO one solution I found rather than disconnect/reconnect is to simply hit the mute button and unmute it. Much faster than a reconnect and the audio levels had re-adjusted to reasonable levels.
