I have a best-practice-sort-of question. Here at the East Regional Library our Spanish-language collection has grown over the last 3 years to over 1600 volumes!

Since many of our library patrons are recent Mexican immigrants with limited reading skills, we have interfiled juvenile and adult novels as well as juvenile and adult nonfiction. Easy and board books are separated. I read somewhere (perhaps on the Reforma listserv?) that adults with less developed reading skills would be more likely to check out materials if they were not labeled "NOVELAS JUVENILES" or "NO FICCIÓN JUVENIL." The idea was to interfile so as not to stigmatize the reader by their choice of materials from the "kids" section.

Now however, the collection has reached the size that the "juvenile" materials seem to be sort of "lost" in it. I would like to reorganize, make these materials more visible by separating them but label them so adults will still use the materials. Some suggestions I have received have been to label the fiction
 "novelas faciles"
 "novelas cortas"
 "novelas para jovenes" (everyone wants to be young?) and nonfiction

 "no ficción para jovenes"

In the English collection we have these materials labeled "juvenile fiction" and "juvenile nonfiction." I welcome your wisdom and suggestions!

Robin asks about signage to distinguish the YA and Adult collections; she's concerned that labeling books JUV will discourage some adults from using them.

I think using "para jóvenes" would likely have much the same effect. And the "novelas cortas" suggestion sure wouldn't fit the Harry Potter books very well!

There's a principle in marketing that says the way to attract kids without alienating adults is to address the family. Maybe that could work in the library--what if the YA/low-literacy titles were signed Libros Para Toda la Familia?

That, like any other label, is partially inaccurate. Part of what makes this such a conundrum is that the line between "Adult" and "YA" books is necessarily blurry, regardless of the language. Experienced library users recognize that the division is one of convenience; they know that youngsters and adults routinely take out stuff from each others' sections. Robin's query pays attention to the user who, perhaps already embarrassed about his reading ability, would feel humiliated to have to check out books from a JUV section.

How do library staffers help put such a visitor at ease and facilitate his borrowing entertaining books that fit his literacy level?

Saving Sandy's Database
  

Last summer one of the worst disasters in post-WWII librarianship took place at the Hennepin County Library - Charles Brown decided to end using the Berman/Freedman Bibliographic Database founded by current ALA prez Mitch Freedman and built by HCL head cataloger Sandy Berman and his staff. I started a petition to save it. Subsequently HCL and the University of Illinois recently signed the legal documents that provides access to the database to the public thru the ALA Archives housed at UI.

Chris Prom, the assistant university archivist, is in charge of the transfer. He recently told me that anyone who is willing to sign the sub-licensing agreement can send a CD-R to him and he will return a copy of the database. You can reach him at: prom@ux1.cso.uiuc.edu.
He will be sending out a public press release by the beginning of July. I am just writing this as the person who worked with Casey Hill at New Pages, creating a petition signed by more than 100 librarians and others from around the world. I have also been asking Mr. Charles Brown and his staff about gaining the access they promised a year ago. Given what they have done to Sandy - like discard all of his books from their collection, hire expensive private investigators to find out WHO discarded them, and eventually finding NO ONE - all this after they forced him to retire ( see Revolting Librarians Redux for the full story plus a state-of-the-library article by Berman)- I have no reason to believe anything they say. Luckily Chris Prom is not like those people.

My copy was mailed by Mr. Prom today - Monday, June 9th. I have no idea how I will use it - but I will. Hopefully thousands of people, including catalogers, will acquire their own copies, and somehow use his patron-friendly subject indexing to continue the work that Berman and Freedman began so long ago. I know that LC catalogers continue to totally ignore Sandy's many suggestions - they won't respond to his letters in any way. They did create a new subject heading last summer in record time - mountaintop removal mining - after Sandy, myself, and other anti- MTR people in Appalachia wrote LC.

and Madeline Douglas, the webmaster, for fighting for Sandy - the librarian who fought for us all.

At the same time as we applaud the rescue of the databases, we should also encourage UI to make them accessible on-line as an OPAC with the bibliographic database and authority file interacting.

I work for Seattle Public Library and am part of a group working to create a community profile of the Latino/Spanish-Speaking community in Seattle, Washington. Part of the work includes making contact with business,community,non-profit,and governmental organizations that provide services to the community. We are seeking feedback from these in addition to community leaders & individuals we might meet at community events for the remainder of this year.

Our group has an opportunity to ask questions about how we can improve library services and also ask what the specific service needs of the community are. I have a copy of the Yolanda Cuesta & Gail McGovern packet which has great ideas but I'd like to get feedback from someone who has done this work recently.


My question for those of your reading: Have you done this work before with the Spanish speaking community? Could you share your methodology? Are there questions that you asked that you could share? What do you wish you would have done differently?

So far I have an outline (in my mind) of asking for information in an informal way at community events. We thought of providing butcher paper people could write their comments on in a free flow whatever comes to mind manner. We also thought of a brief survey like:

When you have a question, name two or three people or places you would ask or go to?

Would you consider asking the library why or why not?
If not what keeps you from doing so?

Did you know you can go to the library for tax forms?
Did you know you can go the library for free computer classes
Did you know you can go to the library to borrow a book for you and your family in Spanish.
Did you know you can fill out an application in Spanish?

I am sure not an expert on this, but I have some recent experience that may be useful. Our library system is in central Washington State and lots of folks here speak Spanish. In April and May of this year, I interviewed representatives from organizations that serve Latinos and Spanish speakers. We have a history of working well together with these organizations and they include a variety of Head Start agencies, The Washington State Migrant Council's Migrant Seasonal Head Start and Early Child Education and Assistance Program (ECEAP), Catholic Family and Child Services, and a number of school districts. They were great sources of information. I used a form that had a number of questions, including: What is your organization's mission?; Do you have ethnic and language usage information on your clients (for example, what percentage of your clients speak Spanish primarily in their home?); Do library services help you achieve your goals and fulfill your mission?; Do your clients use the library?; What barriers prevent your clients from using the library?; What library programs, services, and materials are most needed by your clients; How could we improve library services to your clients?; and do you have any comments? Greetings. The library I work for will be changing it's name's suffix from "central library" to "main library." We have used "biblioteca central," for the Spanish translation and although the Spanish word "central" can imply "main"(in English)my supervisors would prefer another word, if possible.

On the web thus far, I have only found the main library(ies) referred to as "biblioteca central." Other than the word principal (to make: "biblioteca principal") are there any suggestions? Thanks!

You recently sent me information you used to survey organizations serving Latinos & Spanish-speaking in your community. Thank you! Your information will be useful to us at this point in time as we are now phasing into that very thing-contacting organizations.

Here's an update of what has happened so far.

Our profile team has attended the second of 4 festivals and even though we have used a slightly different survey for each event, we have
received a lot of good information from each.

I decided that the butcher paper idea would not work well in a festival setting because it's just too busy, and because we might not have received as much information. People might have only been inclined to write a few sentences. So we went instead with a brief survey of 8 questions that included a couple of demographic related questions, questions that would give us an indication of the level of awareness the individual had about the library and library services, and questions asking how we as an organization could improve services to the
community. We also included a question about whether the individual knew about the various ways to contact the library e.g. email, telephone, livechat, U.S. mail, and in person. All questions were in English and Spanish. This served us very well since we talked to English only, Spanish only, and bilingual folks.

We have done well with these questions, but could use two more on language used and radio/newspaper usage.

Thank you again for responding to my inquiry about how to go about this. When I wrote the email, I wasn't sure how to start or what to ask and how much to ask. I decided to just start with something and refine as we went along through the year.

That's my update for now.

This is for Susan Holland. Here in Mexico one of the best selling magazine`s is "Muy Interesante". It has a whole bunch of articles on science, health, archiological and technological innovations. Other magazines that are popular (mainly because they are filled with gossip about latin stars) are "Quien" and "Hola!". One of the most popular newspapers is "Ocho Columnas" (for it's political content). I hope this helps!

I'm going to add a couple music magazines to the other great suggestions that've been offered. But first:

Suzann is in Iowa. Her community might differ, but the last Census found that 91% of foreign-born Latin Americans living in Iowa hail from Mexico & Central America; Mexico alone accounts for 77% of them.

It'd be good if the daily newspaper selected by Suzann speaks to concerns & interests of people from that region. La Opinión is one that does a good job of this, while certainly not ignoring the rest of the hemisphere. Crucially, La Opinión offers extensive soccer and boxing coverage.

For an incomplete list of US Spanish-language dailies with Web links, visit Prensa Escrita. Note that not all those listed are dailies, and that among those missing is the Washington DC paper La Nación USA.

Music magazines: Furia Musical is a glossy biweekly focusing on regional music (largely Mexican: banda, norteña, tejano...) packed with chatty news and photos. It's an appealing magazine, but WorldCat lists only three dozen subscribing US libraries.

My own favorite is al borde, also a biweekly but this one's mainly about rock en español. Published since 1997 in Los Angeles, this tabloid with a full-color cover is an entertaining source of news about alterlatina musicians and includes reviews of films and other media. Subscriptions cost $35, but WorldCat shows only one library with al borde in the catalog: Eugene PL in Oregon.

We are setting up a "Spanish Corner" in the library where we will put new books, videos, and periodicals for about 6 months, rotating the collection as new things arrive. We are looking for an interesting name for this corner. The signage will be bi-lingual. Nearby are computers and other browsing books and we'll include info about the full collection of Spanish language materials throughout the library. I would appreciate some suggestions for a name for this area.

How about El Rincon o El Rinconsito or Lo Nuestro? The idea comes from the common practice of nicknames for the obvious like "flaco" "chata" "guero" "morena" "pequitas".

Has anyone found a Spanish translation of the word Software? I am trying to create a Spanish subheading for software in our Library's catalog. When I ask for a translation at AltaVista's Babel Fish Translation Service, the Spanish response is the English word Software. The response at Diccionarios.com - tus diccionarios on-line is the same.

The word I have gotten is: Programas de Computaci&#F3;n

Try CRITICAS, a magazine published by School Library Journal, which has reviews of books in Spanish. Also, contact the Library Services Section of LAUSD (213-207-2255) and inquire about "Focus on Books" a CD-ROM where you can search for titles in Spanish appropriate for 7th and 8th grade.

Also, try Lectorum. They have great coverage of children's titles, and many young adult titles. However, many of the YA titles seem to be translations, rather than original works by Latino authors. Lectorum also has a good selection of school support materials. Hope this helps.

I am looking to purchase VHS and DVD formats for Spanish speakers who want to learn English. We already have the set-
Ingles Sin Barreras, published by Lexicon. Although it is popular, it is very expensive and replacements are difficult to manage. Any other suggestions?

We at Fort Worth Public were instructed to no longer order from Madera Cinevideo due to defective materials and other problems. Has anyone else experienced this?

I'm a bilingual storyteller working in schools and libraries in Madison, WI. Our problem is getting Latino parents to bring their kids to bilingual storytimes. A few Latinos do use libraries but to use the computers or check out videos. I've heard lots of reasons why and don't know what to do - I've put announcements in Spanish newspapers and mercados, sent flyers to schools, and now am speaking to Latino parent groups. Any other suggestions on what has worked in your library or city would be appreciated.

I'm curious the days and times the story time programs are held. Consider times when the family is already likely to be out and about. Sundays after mass might be a good bet. Advertise at churches and/or have them make annoucements about your program. Make sure people know it's free.

How about your stories? Are the stories about positive slices of Latino Life? I read a sweet book titled Too Many Tamales about a little girl who loses her mother's ring in a batch of tamales.

Another consideration is that maybe you'll have to go to them a few times before they come to you.

I would also like to suggest that you take a look at the most recent American Libraries. There is a great article on called "De Colores:The Universal Language of Bilingual Storytelling". Here in Multnomah County we have had a wide range of experiences with storytimes, some successful some not. One idea is start with an established group, such as WIC mothers or another program and invite them to the library. Another idea is to actually have a storytime in a clinic or community center, where you already have a ready made audience. If at all possible, I really like to see folks in the library, but often a variety of approaches are necessary to make a storytime work. Good luck.

I am looking for a compilation of Spanish terms used by children's librarians when creating summer reading program brochures, reading logs, and other materials customarily associated with summer reading programs. I have located many library-related Spanish terms on the web, but none that specifically deal with summer reading programs. I have in mind phrases such as "summer reading program," "reading logs," "Color in one circle for every thirty minutes spent with books or stories," "Earn coupons, prizes, incentives," "sign up, register," etc. Words and phrases such as storytimes, craft programs, puppet shows, nature programs, reading aloud or together, in fact, many of the words associated with children's programming in general would be helpful. I would also like to find a Spanish-language explanation of the "why," the importance of continuing to be involved with books and reading throughout the summer, the rationale to include in the letters to parents that precede the actual summer programs. Thanks.

I use the term Juego de Lectura del Verano, which translates as Summer Reading Game. We don't do logs in Spanish, but ours are very simple, just spaces where they can write their name, school, and book titles.

Last year I approached a Spanish speaking family that was browsing in the department and asked them if they were going to participate in the summer reading game. The mother told me that they thought it was "puro inglés" - "all (only in) English". I was happy to set them straight and promptly added a desk sign in Spanish that said:

¡Sí, se puede participar en el Juego de Lectura del Verano en español! Pregúntenos para más información.

For storytime, I use the general phrase tiempo de cuentos, but have also conducted bilingual storytimes we called Cuentitos.

Regarding Jeanne's labels (Message 50):

-Detective/mystery/cop novels all fit into the policiaca bag (background on that is here)

-For romance, you can say novelas románticas (examples here)

-Classics of 'American' literature are clásicos norteamericanos or, if you prefer, clásicos estadounidenses (the former is more commonly used; the latter placates those of us who stubbornly insist that N. America also includes Mexico and Canada)

-Classic English (UK) books, stories, writers etc. are clásicos ingleses

We are in the process of developing Spanish language computer classes at our library for Spanish speaking patrons. Has anyone developed a curriculum for teaching Spanish language computer classes to patrons? And, how did you get started and promote your classes.

inscritas por otros afiliados por encima de tu posición en la matriz (tu
linea ascendente). Una matriz 4x7 completa puede albergar 21,844 personas.

Ahora, cuanto dinero puede generar una matriz llena?
Por ejemplo, si cada persona en su matriz lee un email diario esto generará
unos ingresos sobre $3,900 por mes! Esto sería una buena entrada solo por
leer un email diario!
Piensa en lo que tu puedas ganar si todo el mundo en su matriz llega a leer
2, 3, o más correos diarios!!

Although it is great to be able to paste phrases with diacritics, I think the vocabulary is limited. Does anyone know of another site that serves the same purpose?

Although red sounds like the proper translation for web, I have in fact only seen "website" translated as "sitio web". There is this strong tendency in many languages to follow English terminology for computer terms. There is an Internet glossary at http://store.yahoo.com/audiovideolatino/tuyredein.html

I'm working on a research project for the Central Arkansas Library System (CALS), in Little Rock, Arkansas; through the McNair Scholars Program and was wondering if anyone out there has information about their library and what has been done to attract Hispanic patrons. Have the approaches worked, not worked, anything. Any and all information is greatly appreciated. My emphasize is with Early Childhood (with the hope that informing children via the public schools will attract the rest of the family). Thank you everyone.

I have been employed by a library consortium to pick out Spanish materials for a group of libraries that have a fairly large number of Spanish-speaking patrons. Could anyone recommend some titles that they consider "must-haves " in a Spanish language collection? Are there any websites or companies that I could consult to find these materials. We are translating many of our library materials and web pages into spanish. Unfortunately the staff of our library for the most part do not speak spanish. At the bottom of each page we are translating we have stated that we are sorry but the staff does not speak spanish. We did not want patrons coming into the library with the assumption that the staff does speak spanish now that we have our materials and web pages in spanish. A few of the staff do speak spanish but mostly the exchange will have to be in english, at least on the part of the staff.
I was told by a translator that it is not necessary to apologize for the fact that the staff doesn't speak spanish and that we should not put that on our materials. Is there another way of getting the message across that although some staff do speak spanish, most of the staff do not and patrons will either have to speak english or if they don't speak any english, staff will work with them until we understand what they need? We don't want to discourage people from coming into the library if they don't speak english but we don't want to give them the expectation that there will be staff available who do speak spanish.
Of course all of this would be helped if we actually bilingual staff but that is another discussion.

At the library where I work, we have translated the
library card application and some of the basic
policies into Spanish. A list of staff that does speak
Spanish (In fact we have an entire foreign language
list of what staff speaks which language) posted in a
notebook labeled ESOL. This has helped quite a bit
when language becomes a crucial part of the reference
interview. Good luck and persevere!

You do have some staff that speaks Spanish so I don't think you should be putting on your materials that you don't. People will understand that there might not always be someone who speaks Spanish and your English speaking staff will probably be able to help Spanish speakers most of the time. Also, you might find that the Spanish speakers start coming to the library at a time when they think someone who speaks Spanish will be available. I used to work Thursday nights, and when I would switch occasionally, my replacement would always comment on how Spanish speakers seemed to be looking for me on my regular night.

We have done both. Our local community college often brings their ESL classes to the library for tours. We also have several grant groups whose members speak only Spanish. Luckily, we have a couple of staff members, one in the children's department and a one in adult services, who can speak fluent Spanish. I have done one in Spanish, but I warned the group that I have no vocabulary, and no grammar, so that all the statements are in present tense! They laughed, and seemed to understand and the group leader said I did a pretty good job. ;)

Many people in the Chicago area's Spanish-speaking communities do not
use public libraries because the concept of free books, movies and
music, computer classes and concerts provided by the government is
unfamiliar to them.

To help improve access to technology and teach the Spanish-speaking
community about the library's many services, Hector Marino, coordinator
of Computer and Technical Services for the Des Plaines Library,
developed free Spanish-language computer classes in 2000. Since then,
more than 1,000 people have attended.

"As our Spanish-speaking population rises in Illinois, our goal as
librarians must be to increase their access to public library computers
and resources," Marino said.

Because of the program's success, Marino was named one of four trainers
for a new program to help the state's librarians assess and meet the
needs of the growing Hispanic population. Illinois is one of only four
states selected for the pilot program. The program, Spanish Language
Outreach Program: Empowering Library Staff to Meet the Technology Needs
of Spanish Speakers, is funded by a $21,800 grant from the Bill and
Melinda Gates Foundation.

The program is a partner with the Online Computer Library Center and
WebJunction, a Web portal that provides open access to information to
libraries throughout the country.

Through a series of 10 workshops, Marino and other trainers--Elizabeth
Crane, director of the Round Lake Area Public Library; Tammy Dobonye,
director of the Beardstown Houston Public Library; and Vandella Brown,
the Illinois State Library's diversity program manager--will train
librarians and library staff in the state's 10 library systems on the
characteristics of the Hispanic culture, behavior and values, and how to
work with community leaders to develop outreach programs based on their
community's needs.

Hispanics make up 12.3 percent of the state population, according to the
2000 U.S. Census. Des Plaines' Hispanic population is 14 percent, but in
communities such as Round Lake and Waukegan, it is 30 to 40 percent.

Limited access to technology has caused many in Spanish-speaking
communities to fall behind.

"One of the goals is to make a kind of bridge to the community to
provide this access to technology," Marino said.

"Illinois librarians are always looking for new ways to serve the
special needs of our patrons, and this program represents a major step
forward in serving our growing Spanish-speaking populations and letting
them know about the many services we provide for educational,
informational and entertainment purposes."

Yes, we did choose NOT to include a couple titles that were deemed inappropriate. I believe I followed the advice of a Reformista in that regard. We got 20 fotonovelas per month for $40. That was when we set up the order, so I don't know if the price has changed in the last few years.

My library is considering a "Classic Mexican Cinema" film festival for next fall, using our growing collection of Spanish language DVDs....we recently acquired performance rights for showing videos, but the rights appear to cover only the major studios, and not the Latin American companies producing these videos. I've done a few Internet searches and can't seem to find the right link. Problem is compounded in that I have very limited Spanish. Does anyone have any info on this issue? Muchas gracias!

Our library has developed a spanish collection over the past 10 years without much input from the community. At this time the collection needs to be weeded. The collection development team is looking for ways to connect with the community to build a collection patrons will want to use, any suggestions are welcome.

Jennifer - we've faced the same challenge in our community, and I haven't had a lot of luck in soliciting suggestions from the Spanish speaking patrons. However, we have had outstanding cooperation from some of the assistance agencies in the area, particularly those offering ESL classes....I always ask the teachers and others what they think the patrons might want. We also encourage tours, with someone from the ESL class providing translation, and that gives us another opportunity to see what they want. We've found Spanish language movies have top circulation, followed by books and tapes on learning English, books on health care, child rearing, cooking and relationships. Novels don't seem to do that well.

I want to add to Lorie's suggestions. I didn't catch where you were from or where your community members are from, but in general non-fiction circs a lot better than fiction. And really practical non-fiction. How to books are popular and anything that will help someone get a better job. Materials to learn English are still the most popular item that we have, but books on construction are popular too. The community here in Oregon is mostly from Mexico, so we get Mexican cookbooks, history and other cultural topics-but I try if possible to get books with great graphics that aren't highly technical. Videos and DVDs are very popular, so if I can find a how to on video-guitar, yoga, pregnancy are some that I have found in Spanish I try to snap it up.
I would also take a look at some of articles in Criticas that discuss collection development and there are some great books, Serving Latino Communities by Camila Alire has a good chapter on building a collection.

Are their Spanish speaking staff at your library? It
makes a great difference. Anyway, since I was hired at
my library (I am Spanish-speaking) I am able easily to
chat with patrons as they browse in the collection and
offer them help. Now that they have come to know me
they do now request authors they hear about on the
radio and television. If any of you have the
opportunity to see Jorge Ramos on Despierta America,
he has a reading club much like Oprah's.

Also, on Spanish language radio there is a female
doctor(her name escapes me now) who has her own
program and then there is a financial advisor named
Julie Stav who also gives advise on radio. Maria
Antonieta Collins (television anchorwoman with Jorge
Ramos) has at least 3 books that are well requested.
Also, depending on what region your patrons are from
will determine usually their music tastes. The
majority of our patrons are "nortenos" who like
gruperos, banda & nortena music. But there are also
those who like other latin artists and other genres
like reggaeton & salsa/merengue/cumbia, etc.

Once the library did invest in Spanish videos, which circed only a few times, never to be returned again. Greetings: I am a retired attorney. A few years ago a man
came to me with a letter. He asked me to verify the fact that
this was legal to do. I told him I would review it and get back
to him. When I first read the letter my client brought me, I
thought it was some "off-the-wall" idea to make money. A week

La multa (las multas) is the right term for fine, but the word for fee depends on the context. Los honorarios is what you would use for a doctor's fee or a lawyer's fee. Is a patron's fee like an entrance fee? If so, then it's la entrada. If it's more like dues or a membership fee, then it's la cuota de socio. If it's more like tuition, then it's los derechos (de matricula). (It's a pretty complex term -- I had to look up the different permutations...)

My assistant (from Mexico)said cobro por mantenimiento is the right term for a fee that covers the papers, the printers, or to pay to maintain the library/club/gym. It's like a maintenance fee.

I don't know about the "heritage" aspect, but OCLC has Spanish-language bookmarks with the basic Dewey classes.

Hello to everyone, I first take part in that discussion group. I'm not a professional librarian but a simple student of Library and Information Science.
You have already noticed that I'm not an English native speaker, so I apologize for my poor English.
I have to do a work that consists of finding a forum or discussion list about libraries, archives or information science, asking anything and waiting for your answers. Then I'll be able to sum up and remarking them on.
Therefore, I'd like to ask how long does it takes finding a job related to the libraries and information science world in your country.

It took me about four months to find my position as a children's librarian. I probably could have found a job sooner if I applied for adult positions, too. I live in Chicago, so there are more opportunities than in other parts of the USA.

I think your English is quite good, especially your spelling. Good luck with your schooling.

I started my job search a few months before graduating from the Library and Information Science program at Kent State University. I was offered a job two months after graduation with Columbus Metropolitan Library, where I have worked for almost 15 years now. Here in Ohio libraries enjoy strong public support, so I'm sure that has an effect on the job market here.

I am applying for a Masters in School library & Information technologies. I am a teacher at a Dual Language Public School. One of the requirements is that I write an essay why I wish to become a school library media specialist. Honestly, I can think of a lot of reasons but none of them are in an organized manner.
