you'll have no problems unless you have your desktop configured with automatic background rotation for both monitors.

when you add/remove an external monitor with that enabled, the dock will crash ever few plug/replugs.

The DVI spec has a pin specifically for detecting that a display has been plugged in. When the graphics card sees this pin become active, it asks the display what it is and some data is exchanged about the display.
The VGA dongle on the iBook has a similar feature. I'm not sure about the 12inch PB.

I knew this post would get plenty of "Well, duh" kinds of responses. The reason I made the post was that for ages Apple has suggested that external monitors be connected to a Mac while it is either sleeping or powered down. On my previous Macs if I plugged in an external monitor without sleeping first then the display would be whacky until I either slept the machine and woke it or I restarted. Until now I have been following Apple's advice...

So you were thinking maybe you had to restart to change monitors? The PB G4 12 runs great closed with an external too.

You can hot swap VGA or classic mac connectors all you want. However, I'm not sure I would go doing that with DVI or ADC connections. Anyone?

You have been able to hot swap monitors on every mac ever made. And probably on every computer ever made. What do you think KVM switches do?I can't believe this "article" got a link on Mac Surfer.

What you don't want to do is unplug a monitor while your Powerbook is sleeping. Most of the time when you wake it from sleep after doing this it won't recognize the built in display or an external and you will have to reboot.

I do it all the time. I use a KVM switch to share the same monitor & keyboard between my PBG4 and my G4 minitower. I usually wake the powerbook up *before* I plug in the monitor, otherwise the built-in screen will remain off if it wakes up with the monitor connected.
