Hi Jaqueline,

I am Chris' father. I remember when we went looking at house with Chris at Tahoe. I cannot remember the date, but I remember the ones he was interested in.

I feel a deep sense of regret that he had obsessed with this girl in Santa Cruz that seemed to delight in rubbing his nose in her past affairs. I wish he had connected with some like you and maybe this shameful waste if a loved son would have been avoided. His mother and I still grieve for him. I still cannot understand why he didn't reach out to those who loved him. Instead, he tormented himself with a woman who was lower than the dirt beneath his feet. I guess that was part of his illness.

Thank you for posting on the site.
Feel free to contact me anytime at: aRTSCHEFLER@comcast.net or 318-865-7604. His mother and I live in Shreveport Louisiana now.

-somehow I got a message today concerning Chris. I was good friends with Dennis Fredrickson and I had the pleasure of hanging out with Chris from time to time. The funny part is I remember his profound thoughts on humanity and the world and where it was going, this back in the late 80's, early 90's.

Often, those assessments of his came true. He often thought about the marketplace of ideas and how technology and communication were a salvation to a world with so many ills (In ref to the realities of the the 1st Gulf War and where it would lead us someday). He always fell back of the roots of critical thinkers and philosophy as a common means of addressing the ills of the world, and that people, in essense, all want the same things. He was strong on his convictions and most notably, hard on himself, as if it were his responsibility to solve these ills in his own way.

Sorry it took time to write again. It's raining in Chile and we're on some sort of religious holiday. People like Chris and Dennis were a reminder that some of us that walk this earth, have a special sense of things external. Bright lights often guide the far away questions of time and space and reason.

I have been thinking about him today. It took awhile for me to write back. I completely agree w/ you Art w/ peace of mind. I looked up the planets for that horrible day and it was an aggressive day to say the least in Astrology terms.

Take care-

Jacqueline

Thanks for your remembrance. I guess when a person can have everything except peace of mind, it's not enough.

The letter below sounds very much like the Chris I knew, sensitive, thoughtful and articulate (at least when he wasn't driving me nuts or going off on me... I can't believe I never realized he was actually bi-polar, instead of just acting like he was).

Personally, I think selling WebCom was pretty much the worst decision Chris and I ever made... I think owning WebCom tied Chris to society and other people and ameliorated the worst side effects of his bi-polar disorder, and selling WebCom allowed his instinct for solitariness and disengagement to manifest itself without any checks. Maybe if he had a stronger relationship with someone worthwhile, that might have also pulled him back from the brink.

I still miss WebCom, and even seriously tried to buy it back from Verio after Chris died (not for the first time), because owning it and running it (totally separate and apart from the money) was a tremendously rewarding experience... although I'm sure it wouldn't be half as fun without Chris there. :(

I'm glad that Chris had some good relationships... because the one relationship I remember most vividly was totally dysfunctional - this was fairly early on, I think. This crazy woman (everyone in the office agreed with that assessment) made several passes at me before Chris finally threw her out (at which point she proceeded to camp out in front of his apartment in her car)... after she gave up on him, she wound up landing in bed with TWO other friends of mine (I heard about this after the fact from them) before finally leaving town. Fortunately for her, I can't remember her name. Chris always said that the worst thing that could happen to WebCom would be for him to fall in love... I never agreed with that idea, but this one woman almost convinced me.
