True, that Van Dyke wrote the lyrics. However, the concept of the song and the entire SMiLE project lays in Brian's hands. Brian's influence, specifically emotional content, on those songs is heartily evident. I don't mean to demean Van Dyke's contributions, but when I hear anything from SMiLE I can't help but view it as an emotional reflection of Brian himself. Besides, I love Brian Wilson so I always give him credit, even unduly. ;)

I mean, I like Van Dyke. I love his writing. The lyrics for Surf's Up are simply brilliant. And I thoroughly enjoy Orange Crate Art. But there's something missing that Brian has. Did I mention I worship Brian?

Plus, I've always viewed all of the songs as Brian's, no matter who wrote the lyrics. Whether it's Gary Usher, Tony Asher or Mike (gag) Love. Brian drove those songs. It was what was in his head, the lyricist helped.

Technically, though, I could call my quote a Beach Boys song. They did record it officially for Wild Honey as "Mama Says". The SMiLE version is much better though.
