So far the Red Bull Trolley Grand Prix has been bi-annual. Expect the next one in 2007. Keep an eye on http://www.redbull.co.nz/It is usually advertised on TV3 If you want to travel, there are some in other countries, but they sometimes, if not always, do not accept overseas entries, so you would have to get in with a resident team to compete. Watching one in any country would be a real hoot. England is getting tough to see though, as it is so popular you have to enter a ballot to to a ticket to watch.

How can I find out about the red bull trolley derby, e.g. specs, dates, etc?
Is there a website I can go to?

Helensville Trolley Derby
Rules 7.Drivers must be seated, facing forward (no lying down)
What does that mean?
There are many trolleys around in which the driver is prone, with his bum pointing at the ground, and the 'seat' is nothing more than a headrest, some with not even that.
Is that what they are trying to ban?

Would it be possible to organize a "Frostie Derby" it sure is cold enough. Willing and waiting.

Sometimes I think organisers should bestow a Dick of the Day award on the bozo that does the most damage to other peoples trolleys.
Looking at History on the website, I don't see that much is likely to happen for a while.

I enjoy building trolleys, but only once, then improving it bit by bit. I dont think our trolly is fragile; not too many would have survived without some sort of damage given the same treatment as ours was given. But, your advise is good and we will take care of our own return to the start in future, if we feel it will make sure there will be no damage done. I will be removing the axels this week and trueing them up again. When is the next run and where? lets get out there again.

I found out a long time ago that trolleys get damaged at derbies. It seems to be unavoidable.
My policy is to stick close to a fragile trolley and supervise the handling at all times or...
...build them rugged and don't bother doing a fantastic paint job.
I used to get upset about damage, but I don't let it worry me any more. I have fun at the derbies and have fun fixing them up and reconfiguring them for the next derby.
When a trolley wouldn't fit on a truck at the Red Bull I told them to put it on top of mine. The helper couldn't keep his eyes off it as it slowly sank down on mine, crushing the bodywork that had taken several weeks to make.

Graham,
Many thanks for photos. It was a great day out, and our daughter, Meisha won her age group event, the 10-11 year olds. I felt that the event was run very very well, however I do have one criticism, and this relates to the drivers of the trolley return trailers. One of the guys was in too much of a hurry and turning his rig at the bottom of the run with a load of trolleys on board and our trolley was thrown off the trailer and on to the road with some force, bent three spindles and in generally knocked a lot of paint off.
Not all the trolleys are made from re-cycled go-karts, pushbikes or bits of angle iron welded together. Even so, the bending of steering rods, or twisting of the forks for the wheels, does have an effect on how the trolley runs. If I have to, I will be responsible for the return of our trolley back to the pits, but all it takes is a bit of care and attention.
I am open to any views on this.
Once again, it was a great run and I hope there are more being planed. The phone number for Sheppards World of Wheels is 09 915 5905. Fax. 09 915 5903 E-mail: castors@sheppardind.co.nz The contact there is Andrew Collins.
With kind regards,
Jim O'Donnell

I ended up watching the Red Bull in Raglan (awesome show) and calling in at Te Aroha on the way home to Katikati on Sunday. A great turnout and great weather to go with it. Have put some photos on the website. How did you get on Captain? My biggest problem at the moment is getting my hands on suitable tyres. The ones I am after are 16*2 with a radial tread pattern. The current craze is for knobblies and I am not keen on using them, I don't race my trollies in mud. http://www.nztrolleyderby.web1000.com/tyres.htmlI am also after good 16*2 rims, preferably 28 spoke. They seem to be impossible to buy new. I should be able to turn out a hub myself, but thanks for the offer. It is a bit tricky as the bearing surfaces are case hardened. Do you have a phone number for Shepards?

Hi to you all, Well I have built a new front axel for the 'Band Aid' car and will have a new steering wheel and cable drum set up before Sunday. Chris, is there anything I can do for you? Can I get a wheel from Shepards World of Wheels, and I have a machine shop here at home, please let me know, ok. The kids are looking forward to another run, and my long range weather has it looking very nice. Hope to catch up with you all Sunday.
Best regards
Jim

Hi Folks, I am going to do my best to make it to the Te Aroha derby but I think I will only have my camera with me. The kids that race my trolleys are in Oz on holiday and I have been (and will be) too busy to build a new front wheel for Mooloo (Team Udder Madness) to replace the one I smashed at the Red Bull. I am supposed to have a spare, but it was stolen, along with my tools, car, trailer, and props for our Grand Entrance for the Red Bull.
We may get the car back as my wife discovered that it got new plates and a new warrant 5 days after it was stolen. I wouldn't have thought that it was possible to do that to someone else's car, but there is no link between the Plods computer and the LTSA computer. I doubt that we will get Mooloo's spare wheel back with it though, which is a real nuisance as it runs a rear bike hub machined to fit a 12 mm stub axle and is offset spoked, which is quite tricky to do.
I am really looking forward to the TV2 Red Bull program on Saturday. I just hope I can organise myself so that I am not on the on the road somewhere between Raglan and Katikati at the time.
Regards Chris

Yes this is a great idea. I would like to see more get togethers to run our trolleys. I have a lot of information on building safe cheap trollies and also have adesign for very cheap disk breaks. I look forward to more discussions. See you all at Te Aroha this weekend.
Kind regards Jim

Hi folks, I have just found this bulletin board service and I am just wondering if I should be using something like this rather than (or in conjunction with) the current newsgroup emails. What do you think? http://nztrolleyderby.web1000.com/
