It turned out that the lady’s arrived at the Dovercourt House a little late. So at 10 pm we decided to go to the Lula Lounge on Dundas St. for some Salsa instead of the Lindy Hop at the Dover court House. They had a special band from New York playing a Latin type of Jazz than no one could dance too. So everyone stood around until midnight when the DJ music came on and then the dance floor filled up instantly. The big band really stunk. A band that can have 200 people in the hall and no one can dance to it is really bad in my books. Anyway, the Salsa was good after that but it was a little late. We left at 2 pm and I got stuck in the traffic as the Gardener was shut down from the Lakeshore to Islington. Real bummer. I didn’t get to bed until 4 pm. Anyway, these two hot ladies were a pleasure to dance with. Thank you Vera and MaryH.

There is a Salsa lesson Hamilton at La Brisks at about 8 pm tonight. $8 plus a buffet meal and a dance. Does anyone want to go?

I'm off to rollerblading now and will have to have a nap this afternoon I guess LOL.

Yes I got stuck in that mess. I got to bed at 4 am and so slept in on Sunday and went to the Cancer ride function at 12pm but they said they were not letting anyone else on the hwy to roller blade. So I missed that. I got ticked off and just left and went down to the confederation Park pathway.

Are there any people in our group that would like to go to Toronto this Friday to take in the West Coast Swing lesson and dance at the Toronto Swing Dance Society at the Argonaut Club?

If there are, then let me know because I would like to get a lesson in before the Buffalo weekend. I may go if I can find some Toronto people who may need someone to fill a vacant spot in a hotel room. It does not appear that anyone from our group is interested in this function.

It's quiet here. What's new? Any dancing this Friday?

Yes it is quite in here.
I have been busy on other projects and have not been retrieving my email.
I stayed in yesterday (Friday) for once.

There are not a lot of people interested in Ballroom dancing or WCS or Salsa who also want to travel to the more distant venues so I am just leaving this board up for the future.

Where are you from Princess?

I am from Cambridge, Ontario. I am interested in ballroom dancing. Won't mind to travel if the dance is a good one, especially if there is a live band there. Do you have any suggestions where I can go on weekends in the near by area? Buffalo, New York ....?

There are dances that come up all the time in various types of ballroom and Swing. You can go to www.dancinglist.com for a list of danced that Tony Hornick keeps.

Brantford has a Sunday night dance at the Best Western by the Wayne Gretsky Parkway. This is a social dance though. Burlington has a Saturday dance at the Burlington Social Club on the South Service road just East of Appleby Line. Saturday is singles night and there will be ballroom there.

Guelph has a dance this Coming Saturday at the University of Guelph. I have not been to this one so do not know what the age is or the dancing is like.

Directions to Sonoma’s

Several people are asking for directions to Sonora’s

Sonoma Country Wine & Grille - Bistro
3135 Harvester Road
Burlington, Ontario
(905)333-9463
The crowd is mostly a 35 year old, 40's 50's crowd.
No cover charge and the drinks are $4 on Thursdays. Good deal eh.

Take QEW to Guelph Line in Burlington. Go South to Harvester. (2nd light From Toronto cutoff, first light from the Hamilton cutoff) Turn left at Harvester. Go past the first light and turn left into Sonoma’s, it’s the purple sign on your left. If parking lot is full go out to road and turn left on Harvester then left again in the next parking lot beside Sonoma’s. Do not park in any handicap parking as they ticket people in there, some yahoo comes by at midnight sometimes eh.

Cowboy hat night November 18, 2004. This idea was started by me and endorsed by Sonora’s manager. There will not be any country dancing. The ‘Corner Pocket’ band is scheduled to appear. You need not wear any other cowboy attire unless you wish too. There are a dozen or so of us now who claim they will bring their hats. This is really only a hat night eh. The dancing is regular social type although I do West Coast swing whenever the music hits that beat and I can find a lady who knows how to do it. LOL

West Coast Swing Basic steps
For all those ladies who want to practice West Coast swing I’ll tell you how to do the basic steps.
The lady walks in a straight line then turns around and walks back. It’s like she can’t make her mind up which way to go, which is often the case with ladies. So she walks toward the door then turns and comes back. Then she says I’m going to go, then turns around and says maybe I’ll stay, and so on. The man in the meantime, is offering enticement for her to stay by leading her in all sorts of turns and giving her ‘attitude’ in the way of seduction. Cool eh.

The count: 1 2 3&4 5&6. Alternating feet on the count. Man’s left hand holds the lady’s right hand. Ladies start with the right foot walking forward. (This is the key for ladies to memorise. Ladies MUST start the 1 count with the right foot forward.) The man steps backward (with his left foot) as he leads the lady toward himself. He does NOT step out of the way as he leads her toward himself on the 1 count. He then steps out of her way after the 1 count as she continues down the slot. The lady’s 1 2 is just a forward step step. The man will turn you 180 degrees on the 3&4 then you do the anchor step 5&6 facing the man. You are now ready to repeat it all. The eight beat count steps are more advanced stuff and are very powerful, only for the adventuresome.

The pizzaz comes in with the ATTITUDE you take with the dance. The lady can choose to do her turns all on one beat instead of turning on each of the three steps of the 3&4. The anchor step 5&6 is usually always done facing your partner. When the man raises your arm at 3 DO NOT TURN YET. Wait for the signal in the hand as to which way to turn on the 4 count. Oops this is getting into intermediate stuff sorry.

See you on the 18th of November.
Vic

Just to update you, Sonoma's has a cover charge after 9:30 pm of $3 on Friday and Saturday. The band starts at 10:15, usually. Also, a coat check fee of $1.50 (optional). I am not sure if there are charges or what time dancing starts on Thursday nights. I hear it is a much better night to go and practice though!

There are no entrance charges at Sonoma’s on Thursday and drinks are $4. The dance floor is less crowded and so one can dance West Coast swing or East Coast swing when the music is right. But, the crowd is much smaller on the Thursday too. This Thursday it is hard to tell what will happen because it is the last shopping day, but then it is the last dancing day too before Christmas. I will likely be there after squash barring some emergency.

Maybe some time in the new year if a few people want to learn West Coast swing we can meet at Sonoma’s at say 7 pm and I will show the basic moves to whoever shows up. If anyone is interested in a lesson like this then let me know. There would be no charge for it.
