The Boston Tea Party is coming up again on March 17, 2005. This is a dancing party like you have never experienced. Visit www.teapartyswings.com for details. At least two of us from our group will be going. We will likely join the Toronto Swing Dance Society at their table for this event.

I didn't get to go on Thursday. I had some restrictions (my friend's two girls) and didn't get home until almost 10, with a splitting headache! So I didn't go.
I won't be able to come out on Thursdays now until March as I teach and do recreational work on Thursdays until 10:30 pm.
Robert/Bob is the guy with dark hair and beard who always wears a black polo shirt, black pants and cowboy boots. Dennis is the guy who wears gold chains exposing his chest and looks like a "gino"! (Very nice person, though.)
Do you ever go out on a Saturday? If I am free, we will be going out this Saturday.
How am I supposed to introduce myself if I don't know what you look like, Vic?!!! :P

I am not sure who Janice and Denice and Bob are. I know several people with those names. I will likely be at Sonoma's again this Thursday. Say hello to me and identify yourself as Cassandraw.

Okay, then you wouldn't have been there when I was dancing with Janice... I was around Denis a bit, then Robert/Bob was hanging around me. I danced a few dances with him. Janice was sitting by the water cooler on the table. She has short silver/grey hair. Tanned. Pretty lady. (Used to be my neighbor.)
I should be there tonight, all going well. Probably around 9:30.

I am the one who was leading a pretty lady, Janice, through some swing steps when the first swing song came on.
I checked out your site. Thanks! :)
I am hoping to be there Thursday as well. It will be the last Thursday I can attend until March. (I teach on Thursday nights.)

My computer was in the shop on Friday getting fixed and I just got it back now. Yes I was at Sonomas on Thursday. I will be there on the 30th as well if all goes according to plan. This is my dance web site. http://www.optimalhealthsecrets.com/lodshome.htm I am working on posting the basic dance steps to most of the popular dance. Look for that in the future sometime.

West Coast swing and East Coast swing are not at all alike other than they both have the triple steps in them. They are danced to very different music. Once you have danced to both of them then you will never forget the difference again.
I am not a dance instructor I just like dancing thats all. I can teach basic steps to most all of the common dances but for proper instruction a dance studio is wise. One day I will put all the basic dance steps on my web site, but that will have to wait till I have the time.
Lions clubs tend to allow smoking and so I avoid them.

Hi Vic!
Thank you for the info.
Do you teach dance?
I am terrible with remembering what the diffence is between West and East Coast Swing... All I remember is Single and Triple Time.
If anyone is interested, the Dundas Lions Memorial Community Centre now has Beginner Latin & Swing, Beginner Ballroom and Beginner Lindy Hop starting in January! The Cost for the Latin and the lindy are $65 for 10 weeks for 1 1/2 hour classes. Ballroom is $45 for 10 weeks and 1 hour classes.

There are no entrance charges at Sonomas on Thursday and drinks are $4. The dance floor is less crowded and so one can dance West Coast swing or East Coast swing when the music is right. But, the crowd is much smaller on the Thursday too. This Thursday it is hard to tell what will happen because it is the last shopping day, but then it is the last dancing day too before Christmas. I will likely be there after squash barring some emergency.
Maybe some time in the new year if a few people want to learn West Coast swing we can meet at Sonomas at say 7 pm and I will show the basic moves to whoever shows up. If anyone is interested in a lesson like this then let me know. There would be no charge for it.

Just to update you, Sonoma's has a cover charge after 9:30 pm of $3 on Friday and Saturday. The band starts at 10:15, usually. Also, a coat check fee of $1.50 (optional). I am not sure if there are charges or what time dancing starts on Thursday nights. I hear it is a much better night to go and practice though! http://groups.yahoo.com/group/dccdancing/Check the above, or, become a member to keep up to date with the area!

Directions to Sonomas Several people are asking for directions to Sonoras Sonoma Country Wine & Grille - Bistro 3135 Harvester Road Burlington, Ontario (905)333-9463 The crowd is mostly a 35 year old, 40's 50's crowd. No cover charge and the drinks are $4 on Thursdays. Good deal eh. Take QEW to Guelph Line in Burlington. Go South to Harvester. (2nd light From Toronto cutoff, first light from the Hamilton cutoff) Turn left at Harvester. Go past the first light and turn left into Sonomas, its the purple sign on your left. If parking lot is full go out to road and turn left on Harvester then left again in the next parking lot beside Sonomas. Do not park in any handicap parking as they ticket people in there, some yahoo comes by at midnight sometimes eh. http://www.sonomacounty.caCowboy hat night November 18, 2004. This idea was started by me and endorsed by Sonoras manager. There will not be any country dancing. The Corner Pocket band is scheduled to appear. You need not wear any other cowboy attire unless you wish too. There are a dozen or so of us now who claim they will bring their hats. This is really only a hat night eh. The dancing is regular social type although I do West Coast swing whenever the music hits that beat and I can find a lady who knows how to do it. LOL West Coast Swing Basic steps For all those ladies who want to practice West Coast swing Ill tell you how to do the basic steps. The lady walks in a straight line then turns around and walks back. Its like she cant make her mind up which way to go, which is often the case with ladies. So she walks toward the door then turns and comes back. Then she says Im going to go, then turns around and says maybe Ill stay, and so on. The man in the meantime, is offering enticement for her to stay by leading her in all sorts of turns and giving her attitude in the way of seduction. Cool eh. The count: 1 2 3&4 5&6. Alternating feet on the count. Mans left hand holds the ladys right hand. Ladies start with the right foot walking forward. (This is the key for ladies to memorise. Ladies MUST start the 1 count with the right foot forward.) The man steps backward (with his left foot) as he leads the lady toward himself. He does NOT step out of the way as he leads her toward himself on the 1 count. He then steps out of her way after the 1 count as she continues down the slot. The ladys 1 2 is just a forward step step. The man will turn you 180 degrees on the 3&4 then you do the anchor step 5&6 facing the man. You are now ready to repeat it all. The eight beat count steps are more advanced stuff and are very powerful, only for the adventuresome. The pizzaz comes in with the ATTITUDE you take with the dance. The lady can choose to do her turns all on one beat instead of turning on each of the three steps of the 3&4. The anchor step 5&6 is usually always done facing your partner. When the man raises your arm at 3 DO NOT TURN YET. Wait for the signal in the hand as to which way to turn on the 4 count. Oops this is getting into intermediate stuff sorry. See you on the 18th of November. Vic

There are dances that come up all the time in various types of ballroom and Swing. You can go to www.dancinglist.com for a list of danced that Tony Hornick keeps.
Brantford has a Sunday night dance at the Best Western by the Wayne Gretsky Parkway. This is a social dance though. Burlington has a Saturday dance at the Burlington Social Club on the South Service road just East of Appleby Line. Saturday is singles night and there will be ballroom there.
Guelph has a dance this Coming Saturday at the University of Guelph. I have not been to this one so do not know what the age is or the dancing is like.

Yes it is quite in here. I have been busy on other projects and have not been retrieving my email. I stayed in yesterday (Friday) for once.
There are not a lot of people interested in Ballroom dancing or WCS or Salsa who also want to travel to the more distant venues so I am just leaving this board up for the future.
Where are you from Princess?

Are there any people in our group that would like to go to Toronto this Friday to take in the West Coast Swing lesson and dance at the Toronto Swing Dance Society at the Argonaut Club?
If there are, then let me know because I would like to get a lesson in before the Buffalo weekend. I may go if I can find some Toronto people who may need someone to fill a vacant spot in a hotel room. It does not appear that anyone from our group is interested in this function. Vic

It turned out that the ladys arrived at the Dovercourt House a little late. So at 10 pm we decided to go to the Lula Lounge on Dundas St. for some Salsa instead of the Lindy Hop at the Dover court House. They had a special band from New York playing a Latin type of Jazz than no one could dance too. So everyone stood around until midnight when the DJ music came on and then the dance floor filled up instantly. The big band really stunk. A band that can have 200 people in the hall and no one can dance to it is really bad in my books. Anyway, the Salsa was good after that but it was a little late. We left at 2 pm and I got stuck in the traffic as the Gardener was shut down from the Lakeshore to Islington. Real bummer. I didnt get to bed until 4 pm. Anyway, these two hot ladies were a pleasure to dance with. Thank you Vera and MaryH.
There is a Salsa lesson Hamilton at La Brisks at about 8 pm tonight. $8 plus a buffet meal and a dance. Does anyone want to go?
I'm off to rollerblading now and will have to have a nap this afternoon I guess LOL.

Gees Vera you are spoiling all my fun. Dont they say that the ladies like BAD boys. So Im just trying to play along eh. LOL I will not be going to the Burlinton Band Concert unless some other people agree to go as well.
Hold on though Vera, you give me more credit than I deserve with dancing. If you put me into a crowd of good dancers then I do not dance well at all. It is only when you compare me to people who cannot dance at all that I might look good.
Mary dance; Who turned you down? You can always get bunch of ladies together and go on your own you know. Maybe if Vera and Mary H come along on Sunday then you can join in.
On Sunday may 30 apparently the Cancer Society is having a Bikeathon-walkathon-rollerbladeathon on the Lincoln Alexander parkway. LOL That was a mouthful. That is a major hiway in Hamilton for those who dont know. They are shutting it down from 10 am to 2 pm for this event.
I will be rollerblading the 8 km. That distance is the same as we do at the Confederation park pathway.
I will be at the Limeridge Mall parking lot South west corner at 10 am on Sunday. Will get back with more info when I confirm it all.
Will also be sending an e-mail out to the 35 or so people and couples on the LODS email list.

If anyone here in this Bulletin Board would like to learn the basics of West Coast Swing, then I can give some basic lessons here in this forum.
WCS is a difficult dance to learn but one that women tend to like because they can become very sensuous in it and sort of do their own thing all the while taking lead from the man.

The deadline for The Buffalo West Coast weekend is May 28th for the Hotel room discount. If anyone wants to go then let me know. I will be sending another email about this to the 35 or so people on our email list.
This will be a good time for those who want to learn West Coast Swing. I am an Intermediate level WCS dancer. I am still willing to bunk in with others at the Hotel on this weekend if any people want to go.

Yes it appears that the may so dance is really more like a concert with 800 tickets sold. If anyone would like to go then let me know. MaryDance. the problem with the Hamilton Convention centre big band dances that come up every few months is that there are a lot of people there and that makes those dances hard to dance at. The DJ dances usually offer more room on the floor. The June dances listed on the LODS Events page http://www.optimalhealthsecrets.com/lodsevents.htmare all live bands. Have we met before MayrDance? I don't recall.

Recovering Marydance, willing to learn new skills, doesnt handle wheels very well yet either big or small but willing to learn the ropes on things. Currently working on three activities with big wheels, small wheels and no wheels. Call her now and find out what those activities are, maybe you can help.????;)

Yes I remember now. Those other two ladies were high on drugs and could not stay on their feet. The lady I was dancing with fell too but I caught her before she hit the floor. Lol Cal was not so lucky as his dance partner went splat all on her own. There was nothing he could do. Anyway, it was good that they left early. I danced with a lot of women that night. There was a large group of ladies from Brantford I believe it was. They were a bit disappointed I think.
Yes I remember the dancing with you and Mary H. now. I guess there are a lot of Marys in this neck of the woods. I enjoyed dancing with both you and Mary. Have you picked up any Salsa or West Coast swing moves over the last five months?

You guys are mixing this up. Vic you are correct , it was the singles gourmet dance. You were seated in the middle. The tall blonde lady with glasses ( in black oufit) was on your left, her girlfriend fell and hurt her back. I was sitting on your right and Mary ( very small & petit) was beside me. I had a red dress on. the other 2 ladies left early and Mary H. and I danced with you and your friend ( ..can't remember his name..) till it closed. Dose that help ?? And yes we thought you were a great dancer, and your site is quite amazing too... Looks like you have quite a group... Where is La Brisas ???

Well Vera thats quite a time lag there. What kind of an impression did I make that you remembered five months later? youll have to tell me. Lol
I do not remember where I was at New Years. I have not been very active dancing lately. Have been working on a computer project that has been taking all of my time.
What dance was it that we met at? Ok just a sec. The single Gourmet dance in TO. I am not sure which lady you are. You will have to fill me in. Give me a description of what you look like and Ill see if I can place you. What side of me where you sitting on at the New Years danse?
No I dance mostly in Burlington to Toronto area, not much in Hamilton. But I do occasionally go to the Salsa danse lessons and danses at LaBrisas when some other people I know are going.
Are you into Ballroom dancing or Salsa or West Coast Swing? How about tango? I hear there is a tango club your way.
If you have a dance in your area then let me know.

High Gisele. First we would decide what type of swing we would want to do. Im for WCS.
Then we would find some people with like minds. Then we would meet somewhere and discuss how to get going. Then we would form a web site and contact procedures.
We could hold our own dances if there are enough people or we can travel to Toronto and Waterloo if there are not enough people. There is a WC swing dance club in Toronto so we might network with them. We might also try out the McMaster Swing dance club but they might play a lot of Lindy Hop music.
If enough people in the House Party Circuit are interested in the WCS then we could do some house parties. I can give lessons only in the very basics. Anyone really keen, would have to take dance lessons at a dance school like dance line studios.
I can teach the basic step, the sugar push step, the side arm pass, the under arm turn and about the SLOT. It might take a bit to get the gist of the slot but once you have it then it becomes easy. The next ten years of your life are then spent putting together more and more complicated sequences.

The Boston Tea Party West Coast Swing and Lindy Hop Weekend Workshop
This was a fabulous fabulous weekend. Lessons started at 10 am on Saturday and Sunday. On Friday there were four hours of workshops going on at 5 locations at the same time. You picked which lesson you wanted to attend. On Saturday there were lessons at the five locations from 10 am until 2 pm with another hour from 7 to 8 pm. They sprinkled five general dancing hours throughout the day and evening and then from 1:30 am till 6 am there was general dancing for those hardy intense people who wanted to dance all night. Four hours of sleep seemed to be enough for a lot of people. With 15 or so pairs of instructors they kept things hopping. Instruction was excellent and there were classes for rank beginners as well as experts. Classes were a pure joy to attend.
Midnight came on with a buffet but there was an extra $16 US charge for this. It brought food smells into the dance hall though and this made it hard for those people trying to avoid food late at night which is necessary to keep weight down. Not my particular problem but others wer eyeing the food ravenously.
Dance demonstrations and Jack & Jill competitions between instructors were great to watch. The Bookends dance competition at 1:30 am Sunday morning between instructors was particularly enjoyable. A bookend competition is when same sex couples dance together and compete for free tickets to next years event. It was hilarious. If anyone hasnt watched a bookend competition then you are missing something. It was great. I must say the men out-shone the women though.
Might there be some people in our area interested in starting up a West Coast Swing club? Let me know if you are interested.

Hi Helen. Weekend workshops are held in various cities. They usually have a theme, a type of dance that they focus on. The March 20th weekend in Waterloo for instance, is on Blues dancing and Lindy Hop while the Boston Tea Party weekend of the 27th is on West Coast swing. There is usually a dance on Friday night and Saturday and lessons all day Saturday and Sunday. The various venues usually have web sites explaining who the instructors are and what the lesson schedule will be. They are a good intense way to learn dance steps.

Someone asked me in an email if the workshops were good for beginners. Yes, beginners will be just fine in any workshops anywhere. In workshops they take you to all levels starting from the basics. This seems like a good workshop for people who like Blues and Jazz music. It is great to be able to dance to that type of music if you like listening to it. http://members.rogers.com/stlouisbluesIf any people are interested in sharing a room at this Waterloo workshop then leave a message here in this Bulletin board and see what happens. Lynda Mills (From St. Catharines) just called me this morning and would like to go to a West Coast Swing workshop weekend Friday night to Sunday night in Boston. She has asked me to post a message to the LODS group to see if any people would like to share a room there. The Room rate was $79 and the Workshop was $115. That is for the March 26-28th weekend. She said that if four people share a room then the cost is very reasonable. There is a March 7 cutoff for a reduced fee so if anyone is interested then get back to me. I will calculate a guestimate for the total cost after I get more details on what the weekend entails and an email link if I can. There is a Waterloo Weekend workshop on Blues dancing and Lindyhop. This fee is $115 and includes the dances. It is on March 20. If anyone is interested then let me know. http://members.rogers.com/stlouisblues

Hello Christopher I have reorganised my web site and added bulletin board forums and chat rooms on several sites for people to network with each other on. My dance email is now lods@canada.com. One page on my main site lists all the links to all the boards and chat rooms. As new ones are needed they will be added to that page. This page is: www.OptimalHealthSecrets.com/bulletinboardlist.htm
Although you feel your problems come from dancing, I will answer your question in the chiropractic bulletin board. The link to that board is on this page: www.OptimalHealthSecrets.com/bulletinboardchiropractic.htm
Because other people in dance may have the same problems that you do, then I am posting your question here as well.

E-mail from Christopher
Date: 2 Mar 17:53 (PST) To: optimalhealth@canada.com Subject: spine problems and dancing
Hi, I have been reading your website and there is a lot of useful information on many areas. I dont know if this is the FAQ email but I hope you can spend 5 minutes answering my question. I have been salsa/lambarda/bossinova/bolero/gaffiera/forra dancing for about 3 years now. I started very very slowly doing 2 lessons a week but since then I have improved and am doing nearly once a day. I have noticed for salsa that my back is starting to hurt a lot. This is mainly because I am 6 foot 2 and most of the girls I dance with are too small.. as a result my turning causes my spine to turn in a way that its not supposed to turn since I cant keep my back straight while turning. I dont know what this is doing to my spine but I usually have very good posture and I do other exercises such as pilades. My question is : Do you know anyone I can contact in this related field so I dont injure my spine(You do have salsa connnected to your website and Im sure, with your experience of spine related injuries, you must know how to fix this problem). I try using my knees but this seems to put a lot of strain on the them.
Thanks kind regards Christophe

I have added a live chat room to the LODS web site. Although there are not very many people on our site as yet, this chat will be available if people wish to chat rather than send bulletin board messages.
If you normally enter the bulletin board by a Favourites link of Bookmark link in Netscape then go back to the LODS page and follow the links. I have made a separate page for the bulletin board and chat room.

Hi everyone I will be going to Vibes on Kenilworth tomorrow for the 7:30 Salsa lesson and dance. $5 charge to get in.
I will be needing a dance partner at the advanced level.
Now dont be afraid of the advanced level. All you need is to have memorized the step 123 pause 567 pause and be able to keep that beat while you are turning and spinning. All they are doing at the advanced level is teaching sequences thats all. So if you know the step then come join me.
If anyone gets this email like right now and wants to go out tonight to Salsa then give me a call or email me. 905-664-9540 Vic

Mike would be at the beginner level just approaching the intermediate level. He knows some of the steps and would like to practice them. If you are not doing anything on Friday then send him an email and say you are available and explain your dance level so he knows before hand. If you do not have his email then get on my email list and you will get the emails of everyone then.

Hi Theresa Yes I went to Vibe. There were about 20 people in the beginner Salsa class and 10 or so in the beginner Cha Cha class. There was a new couple who came over to the Advanced Salsa class and the instructor spent most of the time teaching them the moves we learned last week so there was not much new, just a few ending moves for the sequence we learned last week.
The dancing after was not good at all for my age group (middle aged lol) so I left and went home. It was too early to go to Brisks and I just stayed home. I liked the advanced Salsa sequence we learned last week though. It was a complicated arm and spinning thing. It will be nice when I get to work smoothly.

Not a lot of people at Las Brisas last night. Different age groups.. I don't think it was advertised at all.. There were about 12+ people who attended the lesson in total, but there were only 5 people there (4 women + 1 man) at 7pm. Mark took some breaks so the late comers was able to join in around 7:30 and 8 or so..
The place is really nice and they serve food lunch/dinner too.. Great place and I heard last Saturday was packed!

I was at the BSC on Saturday Mary. We should arrange a place or table to meet at in the future.
I was at the Salsa lesson at Vibe too. It was a very good advanced lesson but there were only two men in it, myself and another man.
There were about 20 people in the beginner Salsa class and about 10 in the beginner cha cha class.
Next Sunday is open house with free orderves I think.
Is anyone up for Rollerblading on Tuesday in Mississauga at Scooters?

Hi Mary! :)
I haven't attended any of the Burl Social Club gatherings.
Up to what time do you work on Sundays? Can you make it for the 7pm lesson at Las Brisas? It's pretty good... it didn't start on time either.... so even if you make it by 7:15 you shld still be ok.. Mark is the name of the teacher there and I think he teaches pretty good.

Looks like Hamilton is being packed with Latin nights! :)
I checked out Vibe(253 Kenilworth Av N) today as well as Las Brisas(along Main St /corner Walnut).
SUNDAYS: 4-5pm: Salsa and ChaCha lessons at Vibe, and some practice afterwards..
7-8++pm: Salsa lesson at Las Brisas, with buffet food(pretty good - salads, pasta, rice, chicken). Today, it was free.. but rumors are they are going to charge $5??? cover that includes the lesson and buffet on Sundays. Don't quote me on that though!
Apparently, Las Brisas has Friday, Saturday and Sunday Latin/Salsa nights.

Hi everyone I am just leaving to head to the networking meeting at Emmas Back Porch then on for some dancing at Sonoras afterward.
If anyone would like to go to the Burlington Social Club on Friday (tomorrow) for the lesson and dance, then let me know. This should be a couples thing I suspect.
Saturday some of us will be at the Burlington Social Club for the singles night. Does anyone want to join us?
Sunday I may take the Latin lesson at Vibe on Kenilworth in Hamilton. The lessons are apparently 4 to 8 pm with a dance later all for $5. But I would like to watch the Super bowl game at 6, not for the game mind you but for the commercials. LOL If anyone would like to join me then go back later to dance or has a better idea then let me know. it is the first time they are running the lesson though so next week may be better.
Vic
PS I am putting together an advertisement for the newspapers to find a FEW GOOD MEN who wish to learn to dance better. If anyone has any ideas about an ad like this then please send them on to me.
The house party circuit idea is coming along. There are about 6 possibilities now. Let me know if you are interested if you haven't already.

Hello and Happy New Year to all. I hope everyones holiday season went well for them.
There are two couples interested in offering their house for the house circuit and a possible third. If anyone is interested in going to the dance lesson house party them let me know as I would like to start organizing this. My suggestion is that everyone should be matched up at these parties but some women may like to learn the steps even thought there may be a shortage of men. Let me know what you think.
I also think there should be a volunteer clean up crew to vacuum the floor reposition furniture and tidy up so the host dose not have to do this chore.
If anyone would like to go to the Sheraton in Hamilton on Friday night January 9th for the Salsa lesson and dance then let me know. Also if anyone would like to go to the Yannis Casablanca on Haymarket Street in Hamilton on Saturday for the Salsa lesson and dance then also let me know.
I hear from the manager at Sonomas that they are starting live bands next Thursday and every Thursday. If any of you would like to meet there to discuss the house party circuit idea then I will be there just after 10 pm after I finish playing squash.
By for now.

Hi Mary, Happy new Year to you.
You can learn to dance at both places. Phone them both and inquire as to costs. The Fred Astaire and Arthur Murray studios have reputations for the hard sell to get you to buy expensive packages. Danceline Studios wont do that to you and you will learn just as much there. Learning to dance well is a slow process that takes a few years. Paying a lot of money is not going to help you learn any faster because the process of memorizing steps takes time. Getting out and dancing regularly will help you learn faster. Going home and writing up the steps after a lesson will help you learn faster but most people do not do that.
If you have the attitude to have fun while you are learning and to persevere at it, then you will become a good dancer.

Hi Vic,
Time for me to decide where to learn dancing in January 2004. I have not made up my mind where to go, Fred Astaire Dancing Studio? Danceline Studio? Any information/comment on these 2 studios?
Happy New Year to you and everyone.

New Idea I would like to build a LODS dance house party circuit. If 6 (or more) people could each host a party once a year then we could give our own basic dance lessons to each other and practice dancing on a bi monthly basis. It would be a BYOB and pot luck basis for food and drinks and a volunteer team would do clean up. Are there any people who would be interested in offering dance space with a CD player and sound system and would like to be involved? Your place does not have to be elaborate just functional. There would be no fees charged to attend these parties.

Hey! I saw a guy taking pics with a digicam! hmm... Do you have long hair? I thought the guy had long hair.. or maybe not.. I didn't notice the TREMBLANT.. But we were at the table in front of the guy taking pics.. Was that you? Dianna.. was she wearing a blue/purple shirt (with tiny flowers) and jeans? She was the one that the guy took pics of..
I only saw this email now.. Next time, you guys should put a sign on the table! I was wearing a black long sleeves shirt and jeans and I was with a friend, she was wearing a blue (&white stripes) shirt and jeans as well. We arrived at almost 8:45 or so.. and left around 9:40..
Have you tried the Thursday skate?? oldies music - is it more fun? I find that that the music last night was kinda slow .. it would've been better if it was more upbeat?
What is the Christmas dance this Sunday? What sort of music do they play? ballroom?

Mary you are going to have to change your name on this bulletin board to Dancing Queen now.
Yes Theresa I was at Scooters. I guess I am going to have to put a sign up or something. Dianna and Claude were there also. I took some pics of them on my digital camera and as soon as I learn how to get them onto my computer I will post them on a pics pages.
Tuesday December 23 I will probably go again. If anyone is free then drop in. Maybe we could all go out after for a coffee. We skate till about 9:45 or so if we start at 8 that is. I will post a message to the email addresses of those on my list.
I understand Sunday there will be a Christmas dance at the Burlington Social Club. If any people are free and would like to get then let me know so I can make a count. They used to have a buffet dinner at 6 pm which was quite good. Now that the owner has died, I am not sure if that is continuing. I will find out an post it.

Yes, it you keep at it, you will be a dancing Queen one day and then other people will be sitting down watching you and saying, hey, Id like to be able to dance like her.
If you just sit and watch then all you will ever do is, well,... just sit and watch. You have to get up and ask men to dance. Thats how it is done now days.

I have been to one of their dance classes. They are quite good instructors. There was a lot of women at the lesson that I was attended but that is ok for the beginning level instruction. You dont need a partner to learn the basic steps. If you live in Burlington then this would be a good place to go. I have not been to this particular location on Pine Street but I would assume it is quite acceptable. Vic

Hi Mary No, it will not be a problem taking dance lessons by yourself at either place. You will be in a class with other single people. You will be welcomed at any dance studio. Phone the dace studios and ask them for information. You can start to learn dancing at any age. It is a great form of exercise and is good for the heart and the blood vessels. Start out with ballroom dancing unless you particularly wish to learn the Latin dances or the Swing dances. After you have taken lessons for a year or two you probably will find that you enjoy one form of dance more than the others. You just spend more time taking lessons in that type of dance at that point. Vic

Hi Mary
Most people want to find a dance partner that has these qualities. 1. Similar age 2. Similar dance experience 3. Is willing to commit.... (to regular dancing that is)
Dancing does not become really enjoyable until you have been doing it for about 3 years. That is the same for most sports. In the meantime you can still have fun.
First, take some lessons at one of the local dance studios. I go to Danceline Studios right now but have also gone to the Mohawk Dance Club for lessons.
What is your age, what is you dance level, I assume you are a beginner with no experience at all, and do you have a preference of the type of dance you would like to learn? Vic

Hi Theresa
There are pros and cons to whether women should learn to lead. Yes, it can be confusing to beginners but, in Swing dance, Hustle, West Coast and so on, there are often more women than men. Women dance with each other and, of course, one must lead. In the dance classes that I take in Toronto there are always several women that want to learn the mans part. There is one lady at the Toronto Swing Dance Society who is excellent at both. In fact, many women who know her come over and ask her to dance. She is a pleasure to dance with as a leader or follower. I sat beside her but would not ask her to dance as she was way beyond my level.
If anyone wants to contact me about the practice floor at Danceline Studios then I am willing to organize it.
I have been to El Ranchos too and it is good dancing there.

Hi Vic, I'm just getting into Salsa/Latin and I'm really loving it! I went to UpLounge last Wednesday and it was great but didn't really stay long. The place is a lot better than Yanni's in terms of atmosphere. The lesson is ok, but the place was packed.. I wish the dance floor was a bit bigger. I did like the lesson at Yanni's and Mark's way of teaching. I kinda like partner rotation because it really teaches you to follow different types of leaders. I also checked out Tonic's on Friday and the lesson was pretty good. But there are not enough men who joined in the lesson so I ended doing the guys part and leading my friend (Which wasn't a good idea according to some people - they said for someone trying to learn it is not a good idea to do both lead/follow). :( My Saturday - was THE BEST! I attended a salsa practice in Toronto http://www.coyotevirtual.com/salsa where people meet at Trinity church (hall) and practice. They rent a hall for $15/hr for 2 hrs (4-6pm Saturdays) and split the cost. I paid .75 cents and dance for 2 hours with different partners and was exposed with different styles of Salsa. Then we went to El Rancho in Toronto the food was very affordable. Lots of people to dance with and it was a really nice place. We left at almost 3am and the place was still packed! I would go there again, but maybe I'll try Yanni's this Saturday again. On your site, you have something about a practice floor for rent at Danceline Studios? Maybe you can start a practice time for people in the area! That would be great! I'm sure a lot of people will attend. It just needs to be promoted, I guess... Regards, Theresa

Hi QT I have received your email but am unsure who you are. You do not give a name. I have been to these lessons several times and agree that Mark does a good job. His last name sounds something like (Craw-chin ski) but I do not know how to spell it. The only problem with that place is that they allow smoking and later in the night it is unbearable in there. But, the lessons are great and Mark is a good instructor.
My LODS web site is a place for people to meet online and arrange to go out as a group for dancing. It is still in its early stages of planning at the present time. I would appreciate it if you would go to the bulletin board on my site and put this same email message up for the rest of the people to see. Right now I am too busy to spend much time on the dance site but would like to see some dialoge started on that bulletin board.

Hi! I went to Yanni's Casablanca in Hamilton last Saturday for a lesson and stayed for awhile. The lesson was given by Mark of "Beyond Salsa", I think that's the name.... Anyway, it was great! Probably half of the attendees came without a partner, but it ended up that there were even number of men and women in the lesson. So, we were rotated frequently giving everybody a chance to dance with everybody! :) The people are friendly and I also had a chance to dance with some of the guys in the lesson. I would definitely come back again!

The Club 54 dance was very good on Sunday night if you brought your own partner. It was pretty much disco music but you can dance swing to a lot of those tunes. There was one particular couple who were a pleasure to watch as they were very good at several types of swing dance.
There are free passes available for those in the know.
This coming Sunday August 3, 2003 they are allowing blue jeans. It will be very busy and hot so dress cool.

Some people have found a Salsa place in Hamilton.
Casa Blanca on Haymarket Street in Hamilton Saturdays Salsa lesson at 8:30 or so with Salsa dancing to DJ afterward.
Haymarket is immediately south (behind) the GO train and bus terminal, going west from John St. The Casa Blanca, otherwise known as Yannis', is just west of the BlueLine Taxi office.

Hi Sharon
The age thing is a sensitive thing. We all seem to want to find people roughly our own age. That kind of rankles some people who fall outside our preset target, either younger or older. It is difficult to find a ballroom dance group of people who are in their 30's and 40's. The Swing dancers tend to be a much younger crowd in their early 20's, particularly the Lindy Hop swing dancers, and the West Coast Swing dancers. Likewise the Salsa people tend to be a younger crowd.
Danceline Studios has quite a number of people taking lessons but they have dances only once a month and sometimes most people are coupled up already for these dances, at least in the summertime.
Taking dance lessons is a good way to meet people but I dont know of any dance school that offers special lessons just for people interested in finding a dance partner for dances.
Our Lake Ontario Dancing Sociables (LODS) group is just getting going and as yet we have not settled into a routine. The summertime is a difficult time to organise things for a club like this because everyone is off somewhere.
We will be organising outings where we will meet at various dances. We are in the process of designing an Internet web page that will allow people to find a partner for dances. I will let everyone know by email when it is ready. If you are not on the email list then send me an email at optimalhealth@canada.com. Make sure you put the word LODS or Ballroom in the subject line.
Maybe some other people reading this bulletin board will have some other suggestions.

Hi there. I just discovered this site by accident while checking out the danceline studios site. I'm interested in hooking up with other singles who like to dance. I've checked out some of the dances listed...Germania Club, Leander...but my experience has been that most of the people who attend are considerably older than I am. I should mention that I'm 42. Does anyone know of any groups or dances that cater to those of us in our 40's?

NEW WEBSITE FOR CHAMPIONSHIP BALLROOM COMPETITIONS: www.ontariodancesport.com There are 2 events coming up that apparently get sold out rather quickly. I was in Toronto yesterday speaking with some dancers. They indicated that we can get together a table of 8 and reserve tickets ahead. One event is the ONTARIO 2003 OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS Saturday, October 25th at Rameses Banquet Hall in Downsview. The other event is DANCESPORT FOR CHARITIES Saturday, December 6th at the same location. This one is about $33 for one day. I wasn't able to get any more details yet; but sign on to the website above to find out more. These would be great to watch and learn how it's really done!

The Toronto Swing Dance Society "Bandstand Boogie" dance last night was quite interesting. It was an American Bandstand theme complete with 50's, 60's costumes, decorations, contests, etc. The East Coast Swing two-step version lesson was great, but most of us had a hard time trying to do it to music being so used to the triple-step. Great dance but the majority of people came as couples and there was only a handful of good-looking men as singles. The website for this group is www.dancing.org/tsds

Hello Everyone
As some of you know my computer crashed and I put in a new hard drive and consequently lost all my email contacts and email messages. Some of the people who went onto the list later are not on the new list. I am building the contact list over again so ask your friends if they would like to be on the list. Then give them my email address, optimalhealth@canada.com
Please be patient with this new group. It will get busier as time goes on.
There are some people looking to find a group to go out with this weekend June 27, 28, 29. If you are one of them then leave a message on the bulletin board. Just say Hey whats happening this weekend.
I will be taking my second Samba lesson in Toronto on Sunday afternoon then going on the Latin Boat Cruise in the early evening and to El Ranchos later I suspect.
Rumor has it that there is a group of women (the hungry 5 I believe) who are going to a Greek restaurant in Toronto then to the Latin Boat cruise to see if they can find some hot Latin men to dance with. Me-thinks its not food they are hungry for. I think these women are setting their goals too high because Latin men are short. Maybe they dont know that.......yet. Anyway it promises to be a good time and Cal and I will be there to help these Latin men deal with the women. Come to think of it me-thinks Cal and I may just spend a wee bit of time looking around for some hot Latin women to dance with. LOL
So a question to all is What is it that these Latin people have that we dont have?

Some people have asked Why no more emails? Well, I have taken to placing my comments on this Bulletin Board because some people complained I was sending too many emails. In time I will find the right balance.
Note: I have had to get a new hard drive and reinstall my operating system so have temporarily lost all my email contacts. They are on my computer somewhere, I just dont know where as yet. Until I find my address book, if you want to send me an email again and just say BR or Ballroom Dance in the subject line (nothing is required in the body of the email), then I will put you on the new email list.
We are in search of a few good men, Ballroom men that is. It doesnt matter how good they are at other things what they need is a desire to learn ballroom dance. If you know of any, give them my email address at optimalhealth@canada.com and tell them to send me an email.
Are there any people who would like to plan a ballroom function in Buffalo some evening?

I hear a rumour that a group of ladies are out on the prowl for sexy Latin men. They and I are going to be on the El Rancho Cruise on Sunday June 29th.
As I understand it this is a couples and singles event. Let me know if anyone else is interested.

The Big Band Dance last night at the Scottish Rite was fun but.... It was a very impressive building but the band, Sophisticated Swing, took too many breaks and talked way too much between songs. If you are interested in good ballroom dancing then I would recommend that you skip this band in the future. It would have been okay if all you do is shuffle dance. The floor was filled mostly with people who did not know how to ballroom dance so it was hard manoeuvring around people who were static on the floor. They did not play one Tango all night. A bummer that was. We did get a chance to practice some moves though, and that was very good. I wonder how the other couple in our group felt about that dance?
It would appear that the Germania Club, the Burlington Social Club, and the Leander Boat Club dances are hard to beat for learning and practising ballroom dancing in the social scene. In my opinion, the public dances that dance clubs hold, like Danceline Studios for instance, should be your first choice for practising the lessons that you learn.
If anyone has anything to say about any dance they went too, please mention it in this bulletin board.

I will be both posting on our bulletin board and sending you an email for the time being. You can set your bulletin board settings to send you the messages to your email inbox. To do this click on the little envelope about 2 inches down from the top of the screen that is beside the words "to get & post, or stop messages by email"
Dianna has organized a group of her friends for the Boat Cruise on Sunday June 29th. The boat leaves the dock at 5 pm and is a 4 hour cruise. Young and Queens Quay E. The boats name is the River Gambler and cost is $24 in advance and $29 at the door. There will be a Salsa contest on board I am told. They will be going to El Rancho after the cruise for more dancing. This is a good opportunity to meet a new crowd of people.
If any men, other than me, are interested in this cruise then let me know please.
The bulletin board and the connections to people will take some time too perfect so give it some time please. If it does not work or people do not like it then I will discontinue it. for the time being you have a place to make comments and a place to notify others of up coming events.
Barb's note to us of the June River Boat cruise on Sunday June 29th seems to be popular with our group so far. It sounds like a nice variation for a night out and you don't have to be a ballroom dancer.
This isn't ballroom but may be fun

Does anyone have any feelings on whether or not we should allow advertising on this web site? It would certainly help pay the costs.

We are going to have to make an effort to find men for this group. I am writiing an article on our group now and will submit it to various newspapers for publication. We'll see if any of them carry it for us. We must have patientce as this project was just started two days ago. It takes a bit of time for everything to fall into place.

Big Band Dance Hamilton Scottish Rite 4 Queen Street. South (at King) 905-522-1622
The band playing is called Sophisticated Swing Friday May 30, 2003 Time 8:30 till 12:30 Tickets $20 Cash bar no food served only chips and popcorn on the tables.
I would like to attend this dance to see what it is like. At the present time one couple, one lady and myself, are interested in this dance.
I am told that almost everyone is coupled up for this dance so ladies interested should make an effort to find a man interested if they want to go to this function.
One lady has expressed an interest in going to the Gremania Club on Friday May 30. Are then any men who would like to go to the Germania club too?

Great concept Vic; we appreciate all your hard work. Thanks!
Is anyone going to The Big Dance Party at the Regal Constellation Hotel in Toronto June 20-22? It's 3 days of ballroom and country line dancing. You can register for 1, 2 or 3 days; either ahead or at the door. A great way to get lots of exercise and meet lots of new people in the process! Those of you who have been to the Burlington Social Club have seen the ballroom line dancing. It provides an alternative way to dance (to keep from getting bored); and a way to dance alone if your partner is worn out from dancing with you!!
The website is www.danceline.ca or call Judy McDonald @ (905)338-3885.

Hey, Vic! You certainly are ambitious. First e-mails to keep eveyone in the know and now a web page and a group name. Good for you, but if you're doing all of this work when are you dancing? Heads ups, honey and hold that frame! see you Saturday.
