Sherm, with all other items that show up in the OS X menu bar, you can choose to show or hide that menu bar item by going to the preferences for that item. If I want to hide the AirPort menu bar item I can go to Internet Connect and choose to hide the icon. What I was pointing out is that what works on the rest of the OS doesn't work with the Bluetooth menu bar item.

As I am sure you are aware, it is mucj easier for people to work with their Macs under OS X if the behavior of the OS is consistent. In this case, it isn't...

so then, if you knew that's how to remove the icon (option-drag), but chose do it the obviously less convenient way, how can you complain that the way to remove it is "far from intuitive"? seems to me that since the universal method of removing a menu bar item works the same for the bluetooth item, the unintuitive part was your method. sort of akin to complaining that it's far more difficult to open a door without using your hands. this somehow being the fault of the door...

Yeah, I knew I could do this to remove the icon as well. I wanted to do it through the standard user interface, just to be sure I would be able to put the icon back in the future if and when I get a Bluetooth enabled phone. Thanks for the additional tip though!

Actually, it's Command+Drag, not Option.

To remove an icon from the menubar, just option-drag it. The same way you remove icons from the dock.
