Ugh. Damn spoilers.

I normally dig them. Then again, this one was reading at every turn like a waste of eight bucks, yet another one to be subtitled You Must Have Impeccable Talent For Suspension of Disbelief In Order To Have A Snowball's Chance At Enjoying This Film.

I feel somewhat like I do immediately after being credibly informed that the un-fucking-believably gorgeous Woman Sitting Over There is in fact vacuous and a headcase to boot.

(Can't type. ::shrug:: )

But see, that ain't good enough for me. That rationale is too simple. I expect more from a film than just "he wasn't loved, so he was weird."

I don't know...it just felt incomplete and underdeveloped.

CAUTION - potential spoiler -

He was obsessed with that family because he never had a happy, wholesome family situation. The pictures that he developed portrayed a perfect, loving family. Whenever he fantasized about the family, he saw himself as part of it, the loving uncle. Remember the flea market picture of his "mother"? Remember his tearful confession at the end about his abuse? In the end, poor Sy he couldn't tolerate the disorder caused by the cheating father.

My amateur analysis.

I'm curious, baud_boy, as to why you think he is obsessed with the family. I felt the question was properly posed in the picture, but not explored far enough. I am often contemptuous of films who leave open-ended questions out of sheer laziness.

That is what this felt like.

I too saw One Hour Photo recently. I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would, but wouldn't call it a stinker.

In my opinion, the primary issue that is explored in this movie is Sy's motivation for doing what he did. Remember the opening question from the police officer? Is Sy a stalker, pedophile, pervert? Why is he obsessed with this family? The answers are somewhat of a surprise (to me, anyway).

Another big theme revolves around the photography. Are "snap shots" only about happy times? Could a camera be a weapon? What has driven Sy to feel these ways about photography?

The starkness and orderliness in the movie are more about Sy then about realism. I must agree that I have never been in a Walmart that was as near as neat. But I think that the SavMart was portrayed that way because that was part of Sy's world. Notice that Sy was extremely neat, orderly, and, perhaps even controlling. That led Sy to react the way he did to the family situation.

I thought Robin Williams did a great job, and that the movie had a unique feel to it. I would agree however that the family needed some more work for me to care about them.

Actually Mark Romanek made his directorial debut way back in 1985 with STATIC (http://us.imdb.com/Title?0090069). It wasn't so great, but, then again, I liked ONE HOUR PHOTO, so take from that what you will.

How strange... I just watched One Hour Photo and Princess Mononoke yesterday!

I agree about OHF, though my expectations were not high at all (my movie intuition is unparalleled). The only time I was even slightly emotionally involved was when Sy was about to get caught sneaking into the family's home, and that turned out to be a dream. I do think the oversterilization of the SavMart was intentional -- exhaggerated imagery, not realism -- but that doesn't mean it was a good idea.

I'm a huge raving Pixar fanboy. They're the one big shining bright spot in American animation. Listen to the commentary tracks on the Toy Story box set DVDs and you will just fall in love with the Pixar guys.

Ditto on Spirited Away. Absolutely unlike anything I've seen since, well, since Miyazaki's last film, Princess Mononoke. I think that we are going to have a little Miyazaki Film Festival at someone's house when Spirited Away comes out on DVD (next week!)

Bla bla bla.

Moan! I was SO gonna rent "One Hour Photo" like, really soon, too. But now i'm rethinking that decision. Damn you critics, and your Jedi mind tricks!

Ah, well. There's always Spirited Away. I've heard it's playing at the theater here. Yaaay!!!
