I have a powerbook g4 17" - 1.67ghz. it has worked great since i got it brand new. last night i left it on all night - always do. i was downloading some linux isos so i made sure it wouldnt go to sleep, but the screen would. this morning i moved the mouse to bring the screen up, and nothing happen. i couldnt hear the small whine of the hard drive as i usually could, so i figured it just turned off for some reason. then i saw that the plug wasnt lit up at all. so i unplugged it and plugged it back. the plug went green and then almost immediately orange. then the light on the plug went off. i tried a few more times and every once in awhile the orange charging light will stay on, but not do anything. at that time i can hit the power button, but i hear a very loud fan that i do not recall hearing too often before, and the computer does not start. no mac sound, no key flash, nothing..
i pulled the battery and then plugged it in, same deal. loud fan, no action and then after a few minutes it shuts off anyway. if anyone has some answers, please give them to me.

I had a new battery installed in my powerbook g4. It now seldoms reads 100%. The orange light on the power cord is now usually yellow.
I tried letting the battery run down and then recharging. It recharged to 100%, but it will not hold 100%. I keep the laptop plugged in almost all of the time. I turn off the laptop at night.
Any thoughts?

Are you sure that your batteries are charging? Because I had a problem involving intermittent charging, which turned out to be a loose wire (yellow) on the terminal where the battery plugged in. my one year old 1.67 pb g4 has "killed" two batteries already. they work for a moment (a day) and then they die (they won't charge anymore, dead). the power adapter has been changed twice as well and nothing seems to solve the problem. has anyone had the same or similar problem? i would really appreciate any insight on the subject.

Help! My Powerbook G4 came with a broken battery. It wouldn't charge. Apple sent me a new one right away, and after a calibration, my computer would run for four hours while running just one or two programs, including airport, off the battery. Now, my computer is down to 1.5 hours, maybe, and makes a weird humming noise. I've gotten a replacement battery, calibrated it, and I'm having the same problem. When I run Capacity Meter off the battery, it tells me the Amperage is in the trillion+ range. I sense something is wrong but I'm not sure what.
This is driving me batty!

I have two old but nice Mitsubishi Diamond Pro monitors. I have been using one for Final Cut edting and would like more layout space.
I am thinking I can use my serial multi-pin port, but waht cable do I need to get?

Forgot to add - once you know that your battery is not as healthy as it should be (e.g. using Capacity Meter). Buying a new battery is the only solution. But look after it from then on.

For those who are wondering why their batteries are no longer holding at least 2-3 hours battery life. Please note the following. (1) Battery life will degrade in any case. So older batteries - 2-3 years old will not perform as well as new; (2) Using the wrong charger (e.g. until recently, Apple used to have different chargers for different laptop models) will damage your battery irreversably. This happened to me; (3) Once un-plugged, try to use the battery till it is fully flat before plugging the power supply back - keep saving your work of course; (4) Go to http://www.macupdate.com/ to download 'Capacity Meter' (free) to check what percentage of your battery is healthy and chargeable. |

After a few months of being stored (with battery installed), I tried to start my 500mhz G4 PowerBook. Nothing (with and without the battery in). The plug shows yellow not green. Tried zapping pram, push in button under flip down cover, etc. Had the powercord in overnight. Still nothing. Battery lights do not show.
Did my PowerBook get lonely and pass away?

I bought a powerbook G4 12" for Christmas this year and have noticed that the battery will be fully charged and when I unplug it, it goes down to 50% as soon as I use it. However, for many of you, I thought you might want to know that Mac is recalling batteries in models from Oct. 2004-May 2005 so you might be able to get a new battery. It still might not solve your battery life problems.

Yep...I've got G4 battery problems, too. My laptop is over 2 years old, so maybe the battery has just gone bad. Computer geek where I work said it's because I never it let it discharge completely before connecting the power unit. I teach and cannot afford to have my laptop run out of battery. Am currently trying to repeatedly deep discharge (a lot) and this seems to have worked a little. Will probably cough up the $140 and get a new battery.

I've had my PB G4 12" for about 45 days and have read with interest all the postings. Not sure if I have a hardware or battery problem, but when I was in the middle of typing an article, the power cut out and the only way to bring it back was resetting the PMU. The Apple support desk said I shouldn't do that too often, so now I don't use it at all. I'm in Kazakhstan, won't be back in the States until mid-July, when I can get it checked out.

Same story. My PB G4 12" is now 18 months old and suddenly I am getting no more than 20 minutes of battery life. The unit shuts down completely at 45% capacity remaining and just yesterday, applications started crashing when I am not plugged in. Any suggestions for third-party batteries?

I purchased a new battery for may Powerbook G$ 550mhz 8 6 weeks ago. The battery worked fine until last week whent I noticed that I will not charge past 5%. I've tried letting it drain completely then regarging it be it stops everytime at 5%. Unfortuneately I threw my old battery out so I can not test whether it is the battery or the computer. I am using OSX 10.3. Any suggestions?

After a year with my Powerbook G4 12", the battery life is down to 45min. max! Memory effect maybe, regular lifespan I hope not!
I'm looking right now for a quick and safe method to "deep discharge" my battery, anyone has a hint?

just to join the club. My Titanium G4 1G never made more than 2hours in battery mode. It switches off, when according to Xbattery 55 minutes of usage are supposed to be left. I did not find a solution to this, so I presume that apple is very optimstic in its battery life claim.

The yellow wire was loose on the connector pin. That is way the recharge/recognition function was intermittent, sometimes it would make contact. The yellow wire is in position B6, which I am pretty sure is the + connection. So it makes sense that the computer wouldn't boot from the battery or charge it up. But the other connections were OK so the indicator would be able to read the charge percentages, sleep, etc. Yahoo!

I solved my battery recharge/recognition problem: It was not the battery, not the PMU, not the motherboard. It was the six pin connector that connects the battery to the motherboard. I removed the two screws holding it in place, unhooked the spring that attaches it to the battery latch (which I think is the root of the problem), pried the six pin connector from the motherboard and replaced it with the identical connector from another computer. My charge is now up to 81% and it boots from the battery.

I have G4 PowerBook 15 inch (400mhz). Everything works fine except battery won’t charge; problem started while touring in Eastern Europe (220 v). In Budapest I could feel a slight vibration or hum while computer was plugged in. Sometimes the indicator would show a plug, sometimes and “X”, and sometimes the lightening bolt charging signal. Back in Canada (110v) battery charged OK, sometimes. Sometimes it would oscillate between the three. Then went to Barbados (110v) and Grenada (220v). Same intermittent battery charging problem. Now it seems that the computer doesn’t boot from the battery. I have tried resetting the PMU, tried a new battery, archive install. Nothing seems to work. I charged my battery in another computer, and that worked for a short while. It boots the other computer, but not mine anymore, even though the charge indicator shows full charge.

My G4 PowerBook is less than one year old and have the same problem as David Rhugnanans.: 2 haours and 20 minutes is the max I can get from it!

I cant get the 4 promised hours on my battery, all I get is a max of 2:24 no matter what I do.. I think i have a bad battery.. I ran all the PMU resets and ctrl shift option command and power button.. none of that worked.. actually made it worse lol PLEASE someone help

Did you get a solution to this? I've got a new battery for my 15" titanium powerbook, and the same thing happens as yuo describe: battery gets to about 60% charge, then suddenly shuts down. When I switch back on battery charge is reading 0%.

I have a 17 inch g4 year old doing the same thing and the apple store opened a case and had me do an archive install (still showing battery with x when battery is present) if the battery is replaced does that solve the problem?

I have a problem with the battery connection on my G4 Powerbook. If the machine is lifted or moved, the battery seems to loose it's connection and the unit goes black. Other times when I am using the power adapter, it sometimes shoes me the battery symbol with an X indicating that it thinks there is no battery when in fact the battery is in place but apparently not making proper connection. My machine is about 3 yrs old and I don't want to give it up but tthis problem is serious as I travel alot and use hte laptop on planes etc where I must rely on battery power. Help!

Funny. I went to the apple store here in Phoenix (Chandler) and they took my powerbook. Said they'd keep it for a few days and fix it. Mine was under warranty too. It'd be sweet if all it needs is a new batt. Luckly I dont NEED it this weekend, but I am having withdrawls. I'll post when I get it back.

Due to my battery problems, I went to the Apple Store for help. They gave me a new battery right there, and now my problem is fixed. Since my computer was still under its 1 year warranty, the battery was free. They gave me no explanation what was wrong with the battery,

I have a new powerbook G4 and have started having battery probs already. I'll be using it with 80% charge then it'll just cut out - when I plug it back in charge has gone down to 0%. I've tried running it down and fully recharging - no change - any ideas??

This may help...
I have an 867 Ti Powerbook and a 700mhz combo iBook. When shutdown (not put to sleep), the Powerbook loses battery charge at a MUCH faster rate than the iBook. My Powerbook is in my office and it's normal to lose 2% to 3% from the Friday evening shutdown to the Monday morning startup. Thus, it makes sense that the Powerbook would also lose much more battery power when in sleep mode.

RMH, true, the idea is to let the battery drain a significant fraction before
starting a recharge cycle, which is better for the battery because it reduces the frequency of recharging. Otherwise, it
would be constantly recharging every time it dropped to 99% or so. Apple argued that the old powerbook would do this recharging all the time, which explains why the old powerbook always showed 100% charge when I was plugged into AC. But I don't quite believe this explanation because I observe a battery drain during a 12 hour period that the computer is off completely (without unplugging from AC power during this interval). This type of behaviour is consistent with the problem that you described.

PK, from the Apple Knowledge Base articles I have read on battery use in the newer PowerBooks then it is indeed normal to see the percentage drop all the way to 95% before your battery will start charging. Odd but apparently true...

I noticed battery problems when I switched from a 550 MHz Titanium to the new 1 GHz. I noticed that the battery drains even though I am continuously plugged into AC power. After 2-3 days the charge level drops to <95% and the battery then recharges back up to 100%. Apple Support sent me a new battery, but the problem persisted. I reset the PMU and calibrated the battery many times, with no change. In the end, a specialist at Apple Support looked at the problem and concluded that the battery draining behaviour is "normal".

Peter, I cannot agree with your post that Unix was not made for energy management so we should just shut down our machines. Maybe in the pure Unix world that is acceptable, but in the Mac world people use their machines in all kinds of interesting ways and they expect to be able to sleep the machine for 24 hours without worries that there will be no battery life left when they wake the machine. I will try getting in the habit of changing network settings before going on the road, but I still wonder why those should affect battery life as the machine sleeps.
Now that I know that the 1% per hour sleeping seems normal then I can work around it. The odd thing is that this doesn't seem to be an OS X thing per se but maybe more of a machine design or energy management change from the G3 machines to the newer G4 machines. It isn't a huge gripe, but it surely shows an area where Apple could stand to improve things...

Make sure you're not running a screen saver, I've found that sometimes the laptop sleeps but the screensaver is still running, it's calculating but not displaying while the lid is closed. I use a 3rd party screen saver called Basic Black that does nothing but blank the screen, it cured my sleep battery life problems on my Pismo.

Not only that, I used to get 3-4 hrs. battery life on my 667 Mhz. Rev. B TiBook. As of late, the battery life has been drastically reduced. Unplugging it from a full charge gives me about 57 minutes of battery life in the indicator. I am definitely NOT pleased with this. What the heck happened?

I have a 12" AlBook and yes it loses charge at about the rate you describe. At first I thought the battery was funking. I'm in Cental America so it wasn't possible to pop down to the Genius Bar. Anyway, I had my wife pick up another battery on a trip to the States. Works the same; now I have two batteries! Yes, the 14" iBook has great battery life, but the AlBook is a lot faster....

This may be voodoo, but I suspect that networking settings has a huge impact on battery usage during sleep. With Airport, I've had ssh connections open to remote hosts, put the TiBook to sleep, waken it up again, and the ssh connections are still active. So I've gotten in the habit of turning off all networking before sleeping (a "Zzz" location; easy habit ;-) and battery life seems to be reasonable.
I first started using OSX on a Pismo, and this is where I made this observation, since leaving it unplugged for the night left me with a very drained box.

1% battery loss for every hour is right on the money in OS X. It happens with my wife's iBook/500 (10.2.4), my old Ti/500 (10.2.5) and my new Lunchtray (10.2.6). iBook/500 has 640 MB RAM, Ti/500 had 768 MB RAM, and Lunchtray has 1 GB RAM. In OS 9, iBook lost almost nothing, maybe 1% every 24 hours. Ti/500 lost maybe 5% every 24 hours in OS 9. UNIX was not designed for portables. Shut it down if you aren't going to use it for a few days.

The 1% per hour loss during sleep is exactly what I see on my Pismo. I wonder if it has anything to do with the amount of RAM. I have 1 GB in my Pismo. I moved recently and didn't have it plugged in for a week. The date and time had reset to the epoch.

Thanks for the comment, Dave. Actually, I am not having any major problems with this Little AlBook. Every machine is a compromise, and so far this machine is pretty much living up to what I expected. I am just noting that the battery life drops like a rock when this machine is sleeping for 24 or more hours. I am curious if this is the standard for the current G4 PowerBooks, so I asked. And again, to be clear, the issue here is not battery life in terms of running time but battery life in terms of the amount of battery used when the machine is simply sleeping.

Sorry to hear about your batter life, heat problems etc. When you were asking advice on which laptop to purchase. I had written in and strongly suggested an iBook. I own a G4 800 mhz TiBook and a 700 mhz 12" iBook and I know from experience that if you don't need the Velocity Engine then you are better off with an iBook and use the money you save on extras for your iBook. The iBook does not get hot and it's battery life is 5 hours and I mean a real 5 hours. The TiBook or any G4 PowerBook to date has very poor battery life. I usually get 2 -3 hours with it compared to up to 6 hours with an iBook. Since OS X 10.2 you have the added bonus with an iBook cause Quartz is off loaded too. Good luck.
