What is there to discuss? It's animal abuse. You're either against it, or a sick, worthless asshole.

you know I can see why someone would want to have a monkey, perhaps they might even see these ads and think I'll save them from those degrading cages and so forth, and be a really cool monkey-owner, I'll raise it like Koko, and teach it to sign, as soon as I learn myself.

Of course I doubt that most people would be able to fulfill this fantasy of the perfect monkey parent and instead will resort to locking them in cages all day.

Will monkeys, once they are dead in the wild, continue a no doubt genetically modified existence as pets for people legally barred from having children because they're just too fucked up? story.

Having worked with various primate species in cognitive research, these people have no idea what they're getting into. A number of species, particularly the macaques and chimps, hit puberty and become unmanageable as they vye for dominance in their household. Notice how several of the animals for sale had their canine teeth removed.

These poor creatures remind me so much of _Gun With Occasional Music_ by Johnathon Letham, where people adopt gengineered animal 'children' and wives. One guy's wife is a sheep...she wears pearls and earrings and makes conversation.

my sentiments exactly. there's something undeniably cruel about trying to domesticate wild animals and rob them of their dignity (dressing them in human clothes).

What they never tell you on these sites is that these cute baby monkeys grow up to be mean, embittered, adults that bite, shit all over the place, and destroy anything that isn't nailed down. They often are abandoned by their owners or taken away by the authorities because they attack someone. There are primate rescue facilities all over the U.S. that are dumping grounds for these animals. It's the ultimate in selfish indulgence by people who care more about cute X-mas card pictures than these animal's lives.

Well it says right on the site that getting a monkey is a huge responsibility. They tell you that they will bite, you can't get a tiny cage, they're destructive, they cost a ton of money and some will live for 40 years so it's really a lifelong commitment.

The spelling is atrocious, though. It must be a joke.

OKAY IT IS WRONG TO SAY ALL PRIMATES DO NOT MAKE GOOD PETS BECAUSE THIS IS NOT TRUE. FOR EXAMPLE SQUIREL MONKEYS MAKE WONDERFULL PETS! AND SO DO MARMOSET AND OTHER SMALLER PRIMATES (I SPEAK FROM EXPIRIANCE BY THE WAY). IF YOU WANT TO SAY PRIMATES DO NOT MAKE GOOD PETS THEN YOU SHOULD MENTION THIS ONLY GOES FOR THE LARGER MONKEYS. I TRULY CAN NOT SEE WHY ANYONE WOULD BE AGINST MONKEYS BEING KEPT AS PETS, I MEAN SURE THERE NOT FOR EVERYONE BUT LOOK THEY ARE OUR CLOSEST LIVING RELATIVES. HOW CAN YOU ALLOW GAY PEOPLE AND NOT ALLOW MONKEYS? THAT IS WRONG. SMALLER MONKEYS WITH ALOT OF TRAINING AND PATIANTS MAKE WONDERFUL PETS. MOST OF YOU ARE EITHER LAB FREAKS THAT ARE TRYING TO BAN PRIMATES AS PETS OR YOU ARE JUST A MORAN THAT KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT PRIMATES. STOPPPPPPPPP AND CHANGE BECAUSE IF WE START WORKING WITH THEM KNOW, THEY WILL MAKE IDEAL PETS IN THE FUTURE, SOME MONKEY (SMALLER TYPE) ALREADY DO. DON'T BAN OUR CLOSEST LIVING RELATIVES. AND IF YOU ARE LIKE MANY AND THINK "OOO THEY WILL ALL DIE OUT FROM THE WILD" WELL YOUR WRONG BECAUSE THERE BEING SAFLY BREED IN U.S. TODAY AND THEY ARE NOT BEING IMPORTED FROM SOUTH AMERICA OR AFRICA. PLEASE I UNDERSTANT THAT LARGER MONKEYS (AT LEAST TODAY) DO NOT MAKE GOOD PETS BUT SMALLER MONKEYS DO. AT FIRST THEY MAY BITE BUT IF YOU WORK WITH THEM THEY WILL STOP AND WILL MAKE OUTSTANDING PETS.

Hi Roxy,
I have a spider monkey and will be looking for another one soon. They also make great pets but require HUGE enclosures, both indoors and out. I used to own a capuchin..we got him when he was 12 yrs old and he was a wonderful creature. He was a part of our family until his death at the age of 38. May you and Katie have many years of happiness together!!
For the naysayers..monkeys are cleaner than dogs! Of course they can bite..what animal can't?? And they are life time commitments?? So are parrots (I've had mine 28 yrs so far), and depending on the age of a person when they purchase a pet, even a rat can be a lifetime commitment!
