Please, tell me how and where may I get winxp.sdc.exe? Is it having this application quite enough to open and install any *.sdc, for example, en_win_xp_pro_w_sp2.sdc? Thanks.

The Win XP does not install to new hard disk?
Hi,
I tried to install the Win XP for my brand new computer (without any installed windows on it yet). The big probem is:
The files (CD) we get from the library (after extraction) will not make a bootable CD. Even if I try to book the PC using floppy to DOS, the Setup program only run in Windows!

Does this mean that the Windows XP Pro we get from the library (or download from the e-academy site) is only a upgrade version, and can not be installed to a new bare computer? Anyone has any idea of it? Thanks.

Students,

Please note that you can now order the media and have it shipped directly to your home, pretty much for the cost of the media. Details are given below:

This is one of those occasions when you can be thankful you are in the CS Department here at UIC. You can now order online select Microsoft software through the MSDNAA program, pretty much for the cost of the media. The software and cost is as follows:

PRODUCT: PRICING
Microsoft Project Professional 2002 (Single-User): $5.15 US
Microsoft Visio Professional 2002 (Single User): $5.15 US
Visual Studio .NET 2003 Professional - Full Install: $11.80 US (Has the programming languages C++, J#, Visual Basic)
Windows XP Professional (Single User): $5.15 US

To get this software, you must be a currently registered CS student. IF YOU JUST RECENTLY REGISTERED, YOU WILL HAVE TO WAIT ABOUT 3 WEEKS BEFORE YOUR ID IS REGISTERED. Continuing students should be fine.

To get this software, go to:
 http://msdn01.e-academy.com/uic_cs/
(Please be patient - the site is kind of slow at the beginning of semesters.)
Then select the "Log In" button. In the login screen, select the link at the bottom that specifies:
Can't remember your password? Click here for a reminder.
The following screen then allows you to type in your CS account userid, after which you get an email with your password.

I found a shortcut that doesn't require burning the renamed VS.NET sdc files onto CD, or burning any sdc files. Just make a directory named "sdc" in the root of your hard drive, and move the .sdc file(s) there. The extraction program doesn't really need to read them from a CD, only from an "x:\sdc\" folder somewhere on your computer.
HTH.

Jack:

Rightclicking on the SDC file and then trying to run it with WINXP.sdc.exe won't work. Just pop in the CD containing the SDC file in the drive. Now fire up WINXP.sdc.exe. It should find it automatically.

Make sure that your cd contains the (encrypted) file WINXP.sdc. The downloaded program WINXP.sdc.exe is supposed to work with this file.

>>Another quesion: after you opened xp.sdc,....

WINXP.sdc.exe extracts (decrypts, whatever) the SDC file WINXP.sdc to your hard disk. The extraction should produce (among other things) a readme file, and setup.exe. Read the Readme file to get installation instructions.

The above instructions refer only to Windows XP. I've no experience with installing VS.Net, SQL etc.

Thanks for replying, KL.

Last time I copied the files to the harddisk.
After I read your message, I wrote the xp file to a CD then right clicked on the file and tried to open with the xp.sdc.exe. It still didn't work.
I am not sure whether I should borrow the original CD from the library again, or, since I have two CDROMs, could that be a reason?

Another quesion: after you opened xp.sdc, what did you get? A installation disk of xp, or you acturally started the installation?

Many thanks!

Finished installing VS. Went without a hitch. Working fine.
As for just popping in the cd, it wont work unless the file name of the .sdc file on the cd is the same as the one the decryption program is looking for. I had to change the file names of 5 cds coz they were different from what the program was looking for. You can get the file name from the log file that is created when there is an unsuccessful attempt to decrypt the cd. The log file is created in the same directory in which the decryption program is located.

Jack:
Simple fix here. the WINXP.sdc.exe (for XP) program downloaded from the e-academy website expects to find the SDC file (the one you copied from the library-issued CDs) from the CD-ROM drive, even if the misleading program status window would have you think otherwise ("Downloading....". So the solution is to simply pop in your CD containing the SDC file into the CD drive. (having the file on hard disk does NOT work).

KL, I encountered the problems as you did. Would you mind share some more information how you finally made it? Thanks a lot!
mark  47
05-03-2003 01:18 AM ET (US)
I figured out what is wrong with VS.net cds. The file name of the .sdc file on the disk should be VSNET_1.sdc for disk 1 and VSNET_2.sdc for disk 2, etc...
However for some reason the filenames on the disks I got from the library are different (something like 1010_VS_DotNET.....). I had to change the filenames on each disk to the correct ones and burn them to 5 new disks(thats a waste) for it to work.

Woah! Took a second look at the log file again....

Duh! It's supposed to "download" it from the CD. I had put my SDC file on the hard disk. Talk about a misleading step name....

Now it works!

Salil - Thanks for the tip. However I get the same error again. Right-clicked on the xp SDC file and selected WINXP.sdc.exe to open it. Step 1 ("Authorization") completes. Step 2 bombs again. It insists on contacting the e-academy mothership and downloading and aborts after some time. The log file says:

Mark - this same error happened a few days ago when i first tried it. (I tried again today.) Since it works for you, I've no clue what's going on. It's probably not a browser thing either - tried with both Mozilla and IE (latest versions).

Yep, pretty pricey software here; can't complain too much since it's a freebie.....But anyways, makes you appreciate the fine Linux distribution system.....;-)

I believe that the donwloading error is from e-academy. Probably a server is down or somethiing related. I installed xp pro 3-4 days ago and it worked fine. Didnt even need to specify where the files were, it automatically read it from the cd drive.
Lets just wait till Monday. I believe it will work fine.
Regarding the E-academy distribution system, I understand their concerns regarding piracy thereby requiring a rather tedious process. But you have to consider these are $400 to $900 worth software and they are going to be careful with them. However, their distribution system reliability does need improvement!

You may want to right-click the file on your CD, and then click
"Open-with". Then browse for the location where you stored the downloaded program, and then execute it.

This way, in step two the program will know where to look for the encrypted files.

Hope this helps!!

Hi....

I am trying to download XP Pro from the e-academy website. I downloaded the installer WINXP.sdc.exe. When I run this exe on my machine, it bombs at Step 2 ("Downloading")with this error message:

An error has occured

The delivery client has encountered an error and is unable to continue. Please review the error and try again.

Error Code: SDC00400
An error has occuring trying to download. Possible causes are:

No Connection etc ...

Go the same error with VS.Net. I know It's NOT a problem with my Internet connection.

Anybody faced this problem? Any clue how to fix it?

This EAcademy didstribution system sucks....

I found this info on the web:
When installing Visual Studio .Net you may get a message saying that saying that you need a windows component upgrade disk. This is actually Disk 5 of Visual Studio .Net. However, it is not labled as such. After you insert Disk 5 and the "Updates" are complete you will need to install Disk 1 to start the actual installation of Visual Studio .Net

Thanks for letting us know about your experience with XP pro. Even I am trying the install on my notebook, and will not even attempt to upgrade it to pro. I have tried the CD's but in vain. I checked the Microsoft website, and it is a seperate disk which is called Windows Component disk.

Is anybody else also facing this problem?

Allen Pan...did you request a password reminder from the login page? If it isnt working even after that then the only reason I can think of is that you are not registered for any CS courses. You have to be registered for at least one CS course to get the software.

Have you tried your windows xp home cd, when it asks for the windows cd? It could also be one of the 5 discs that came with VS? I havent installed it yet but thats what I can think of right now.

On another note. I tried to upgrade xp home to xp pro. It totally messed up my notebook. It wouldnt start some services to connect to the internet. I tried everthing to get it to start but it kept giving me the same error. I had to use the recovery cd that came with the hp notebook. Thank God I had backed up my stuff before the upgrade!! I advise everyone to do the same.
I would have done a fresh install of xp pro but then I wont be able to use any of the pre installed software that came on the hp, but if that is not one of your concerns backup your files and do a clean install.

I havent installed VS yet. Probably wont do it till after the finals. Will let you know how it goes.

It turns out that the problem has been that e-academy, the organization that is doing the distribution for microsoft, is using Interland as their ISP.

Interland, according to Internetnews.com, is "reckoned by many anti-spam advocates as the number-one haven for spammers in the known universe. At one time or another, the Web hosting company has been the home to almost a 100 spam sites..."

We (CS Dept.) had been filtering anything from this address. We have now allowed mail specifically from the IP that your password should come from.

I just tried requesting my password, and received it successfully.

I talked to Prof. Reed, and he said that it's one of two things. Their server for some strange reason is not sending to cs.uic.edu, or (the more likely reason) our server isn't accepting those mailings for some reason. Either way, he said he's working with customer support to fix the problem.

The disks are encrypted. You have to go the website
http://msdn01.e-academy.com/uic_cs/ to download a program to decrypt them.

Log in (We dont know the password yet). Select the software you are installing. Download a decryption program for the selected software. Run the downloaded program which decrypts the .sdc file. Now perform regular installation. (Be online throughout the download and decryption process. I think it provides you with a registratin key etc...)

You must have enough space on your hard drive to store the decrypted cd images.

For Visual Studio you have to burn the decrypted files from the 5 disks back on to 5 new CDs before installation. If I remember correctly then you can install by booting from your CD drive as these are iso images.

I would burn the winXp image on a cd as well before installation.

Can anyone paraphrase the printed instructions on the CD? I borrowed a Windows XP CD and copied it in one of the campus computer labs. In my hurry I forgot to read the instructions before returning it.

all disks are encrypted! You need to follow instructions on the CD sleeve to unpack them for installation i.e going to the listed site and logging in with your CS account-id and a password(which no one knows yet) and downloading software that does this.

I notice that there is only one *.sdc file in each CD. How to use them after burning them? Thanks.

Sorry for the delay on the passwords that are supposed to be coming from the MSDNAA site.

We will be following up with Microsoft today about this issue. If it was as simple as us sending out the passwords, we would, but we don't have control over their distribution system.

I guess wait till someone in the CS dept realizes that it is not working. I burned the disks so whenever we finally get the password I wont need to check the disks out again.

Is there really a point to getting licensed software if no one can use it? Two days, and still no password. This is beyond ridiculous.

I sent a password request over 14 hours ago, and still nothing. I used my cs server account cause that's the only one they have in their database. Has anyone already received their password? This is really strange....

About SQL
One of the differences is that you won't be able to install SQL enterprise on non server OS like WinXP (Win2000 Server or Advanced server is OK) The developer edition however does not care that much about MS OS version (but I never tried to install it on Win95)
Download DOC on that:

Secure website does not send any password. Does not accept
"@uic.edu" e-mail. Only accepts "@cs.uic.edu", but no password is being sent.

Is it advisable to still burn the CD's and return the original CD's to the library(so that don't have to check out again when the password arrives), or just return and then re-check out.

That way password can come as it pleases!

Use your cs account id like this
userid@cs.uic.edu and request a password reminder. It accepted my id and said a password will be sent to that email address. Still awaiting it though. Will update tomorrow if I get it.

About how long does it take for them to send the e-mail with the username and password?

Also, if anyone answers the question about SQL server, could you please post a reply so everyone can see it

Thanx!

Please feel free to post your questions here. We are currently working with the ACM to see if they might monitor these questions.

Microsoft software distribution is here!

The CS Department has a site license with Microsoft through the MSDNAA program to distribute its systems software. (This does not include Microsoft Office.) Below is the list of software we have readied so far to distribute through the library:

Visual Studio (set of 5 disks)
 Windows XP Professional
 SQL Server Developer
 SQL Server Enterprise

There are 10 copies of each one. They are in the reserves section of the library, on the first floor. You may check them out overnight to burn a copy of them.

The CD's themselves are encrypted. Each CD includes instructions on how to log in to a web site to retrieve the decryption key that is unique to your userid. You are allowed to make 2 installations of each. Only currently registered CS students will be able to retrieve the decryption key from the web site.

For Visual Studio there is an extra step involved. The CD's have an ISO image that you must first download onto a separate CD using a CD burner program such as Roxio. The instructions on the CD describe this process.

Note that there is a bug in SQL Server. When attempting the installation of SQL Server, you should first download the bug fix from Microsoft. You should then disconnect your machine from the network to do the installation, otherwise it is quite likely that you will get the bug before you can even apply the fix.

Here in the CS department we are not currently equipped to provide support for the CD extraction or installation. If you have questions please ask around to other students. You can also send email to MSDNAA@cs.uic.edu, however we don't currently have anyone assigned to handle queries to that account. It is possible that in the future we will have a listserv to give you help, or perhaps ACM can provide some support. We are still looking into these as possibilities, and will let you know as the situation develops.

If you have questions for me about the software distribution please stop by during my office hours, T Th 12 - 1:30 in SEO 917.
