A question re: the programming architecture used (Java Server Pages) for this site - how much more efficient would/could the site have been had say, a PHP/MySQL setup been used as the primary backbone behind the system?

For me it has always been a question of why things work and why things fail. I have spent many years watching new and exciting technologies rise and fail.

Your average Virtual Reality - Virtual Communication thing goes like this.

Someone comes up with new technology.
Marketing wants to create a market.
They get someone famous and some big organization to feature their technology. Basically they comp a big name to show it off - now they have a list of famous client who they paid to use it.
Joe average gets into the marketing hype and installs the software and maybe attends the event.
Big famous people leave and they try to get money from Joe average who could have cared less about this technology in the first place.
Product dies.

You can't plan the killer app.
The killer app is killer cause it has a life of its own.
Markets need to be tapped not created.
Needs need filled not created.

If/When Friendster starts charging I will have to consider what I get for my $$$. I know what my ISP give me, I know what my PayPal and Ebay fees are for. I know how much Porn I can buy for $20 a month.

If Friendster gives me a service I can't get elsewhere and I value it - then perhaps they will get my money.

I wonder if the marketing people are looking at the nature of the people on here and their spending habits - of course I am biased cause my friends are cheap - poor - and just freaks.

2.0 Related Works

Six notable applications, Activeworlds.com, Mixed Reality with the Wearcom, Mixed Reality with the Aqua Gauntlet, Stereoscopic Microscopy, DIS, and The Office of the Future, all utilize stereoscopic video with virtual and or remote environments.


2.1 Activeworlds.com
Early forms of network based communications included group chat rooms and text based chat interfaces for the transfer of simple text and binary information. Newer technologies have allowed users to merge in a 3D space with a virtual body known as an avatar. The user then communicates through text based chat and body movements within the virtual person. Virtual Reality online services such as Activeworlds.com creates environments that permit users to enter, move about and interact with others in a computer-generated, three-dimensional virtual environment on the Internet. Unlike a two-dimensional environment, which restricts movement on a computer screen to a horizontal and vertical axis, Activeworlds provide a three-dimensional virtual environment that enables users to move in three dimensions.

2.2 Mixed reality and Wearcom
The project, Collaborative Mixed Reality and the Wearcom, addresses how Mixed Reality (MR) interfaces can be used to support collaboration between remote people. A wearable computer is utilized to provide spatialized 3D graphics and audio cues to aid in communications. Users head orientations are tracked such that, as they look around, they can see different portions of the information space. [Billinghurst, et, al. 1999 ].

2.3 Mixed Reality and the Aqua Gauntlet
The Aqua Gauntlet is a new type of visual entertainment that is created by mixed reality (MR) technology in which the real and virtual worlds are merged in real time. Scenes from the real world are augmented with virtual world images synthesized by computer graphics. Three players wearing HMDs place themselves around a game field. In this game, players compete in earning points by shooting invaders from the virtual world [Ohshima, et, al. 1999].
2.4 Stereoscopic Microscopy & Civil engineering
John Mackenzie and colleagues from North Carolina State University, employ real-time full motion stereoscopic display over wide area networks. Stereoscopic projection displays are used to visualize Electron Microscopy, and used in Civil engineering applications to further research and aid novel biological imaging methods. In application, the extra information supplied by a third and fourth dimension is vital in visualization of stereo images from a microscope, and control of an unmanned backhoe industrial . In this application, two video sources are captured for a left and right eye and polarized respectively, before being encoded for network streaming. The Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS) network software architecture was developed by the United States government for use in military applications in 1989. DIS uses what is called a “protocol data unit” for communication between sites, of which twenty-seven are defined by the DIS standard. The project “Office of the future” is a collaboration between researchers from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill,

The basic idea is to use real-time computer vision techniques to dynamically track per-pixel depth and reflectance information for the visible surfaces in the office including walls, furniture, objects, and people, and then to either project images on the surfaces, render images of the surfaces, or interpret changes in the surfaces.[3] The driving idea is that some day, offices of the future will be equipped with computer vision and computer graphics systems that work together in a unified fashion to give us unparalleled input, display, and tele-immersion capability.

Paul, the point is that as you connect your friends, the people who your friends connect to will be available to you. Thus, yes, you are responsible for germinating your own network, with the idea being as the network grows it still reaches back to you.

i.e., A adds B as a friend. B adds C. C adds D. D adds E. A can see E.

I wonder if al Qaeda is going to sign up to help them keep track of who's who in the terrorist circles. Seriously though, I find these kind of concepts very disturbing. As another poster pointed out, he and his friends didn't get thier group connected into the larger world. Showing that this thing will depend on a very large number of people signing up. Do you really think its a good thing that a database of everyone's place in the social fabric of the world might exist? Don't join up you say? Well if enough people start to participate in a system such as this (not this particular one mind you) it could become social death if you didn't. And if the social politics of everyday life make you sick as it is already, imagine how phone its going to get when everyone can clearly who they need to connect with to get into the status networks.

I do not understand how this service works at all. I created an account today and tried to search for people of to become part of my network, BUT it's telling me I don't have anyone in my network to search! I don't understand this at all.

Are you telling me that the point of this service is I have create and join a network that I create from SCRATCH from people I know? Whats the point of that?

Does anyone know how to find people and become part of an EXISTING network?

Myself and the few friends I invited to sixdegrees back in the day all gave up on it, as we never managed to connect our little bubble up with the great interconnected mass of everyone else, which is when it (I assume) starts to get fun and interesting.

This is a bit from the article where he talks about the girls goin' for the rocker guys rather than the DJ's. Well duh, man; I mean I'm very happly married, and in no way looking for anything else, but even I know that 'dressing in faded jeans and owning a vintage guitar' is gonna get a lot more attention from women then being a DJ. :)

But anyways; this whole thing really makes my head spin, in a way, I mean just last year was I reading Bruce Sterling's two stories; the book 'Disctractions' and the wonderful short story about the 'pokkichon' and the Cat network (which I just adored!) where Slashdot/Everthing2-ish reputation networks spill over into real life; and become major social hubs in people's day-to-day lives rather than just a way to manage users and content on a website- and here, with Friendster, are some seeds of the same thing, already happening! Man, where's my jet-pack? The future is now!

happy to have survived my three weeks on friendster. very interested in the next evolutionary stages of peer sharing networks. this story is certainly not over.

But I would also like to add that whatever disappointing hype or feelings of silliness you might have experienced with friendster, I have to admit that it really worked for me. I instantly found my soulmates and connected like a lightning bolt to mother earth. I'll spare you the details, but suffice to say that it changed my life big time. Not that I use it that much, but I am ever so grateful I did.

The great question about Friendster: what is their revenue model and how the hell are they gonna survive post beta when
they actually have to *make* some money?
