Years ago I had a friend who worked at a at a 7-11 and we noticed this same phenomenon with the video cameras. It's good they throw in the "clothing material," 'cause, you know, it's not like you might have any "clothing material" around the house.

It's a clever plot to expose perverts, i.e., steer clear of anyone wearing goofy goggles.

Here's a link on how to make your own IR pass filter glasses for 10 bucks. They only work in bright sunlight but let you see only upper frequency IR for some very cool-sounding effects. Good explanation of how they work but nothing with regards to whether you can see through clothing. However, I suspect that they'd let you see through some of the same materials that those expensive XXX-ray spex let you see through.

god I love X-ray spex! They are one of my favorite bands. Oh wait... so is 'XXX-ray spex' the name of a punk rock band, made up of teenagers, that only does covers of porno music themes?

According to IRFilter.com (NSFW), you can still buy filters that work on the nightshot camcorders. I, however, cannot vouch for whether or not it actually works.

I think it's legit. There was a flap a few years ago over a Sony videocam with an infrared mode--when equipped with a certain kind of filter, you got the "x-ray specs" result (Sony retooled the camera to prevent this). St Google reveals plenty of relevant hits if you search on "sony x-ray camera."

Or you could just buy a Sony nightshot camcorder and put a filter on it. It would be $2000 cheaper and look a lot less dorky.
